How much does the spread really matter in the NFL?
I've read that 80-82% of all straight up winners in the nfl cover the spread regardless of whether they're favs or dogs

safe bet that pack covers here and this week that makes 10 out of 12 of the straight up winners cover the spread (only the lions and kc won and didnt cover)

does it make it easier knowing you just have to pick the winner? probably not

just proves that nfl betting is trying to beat the parity and not the misconception that the lines are razor sharp...if they were as sharp as many say, more dogs would cover without winning

Drinker last week set up this week. While as a dog player the NFL is less lucrative it's not cut and dry.

Your saying 82% winners cover spread....obviously every dog SU has to cover the spread and year in and year out they hit at a 30-35% clip. They faves this year are beating the spread 53.9% and won't finish to far off from that. So the challenge is there trying to decipher which ones cover. All I meant was after last week the huge faves got pummeled it was fair to say we were groomed to be afraid this week to lay chalk.

It's never easy to predict who the button is on each week.

that seems like an awful big split for a whole season. there was a year dogs hit in the high 50s a few years back i think was there not? but that was like a complete aberration.

So your saying no one here can pick a straight up nfl winner more than 60% of the time?

If you want to become successful in betting learn how to cap the games without looking at the spread. Most people lose money because they think a team can't lose by that much and they take the points or think a team will win because they lay points. The spread is your enemy. Pick winners and bet them ML as favs or dogs.

this make sense, i hate when guys say "team x shouldnt being laying that much to anyone" (usually happens in ncaa), completely dumb reason for betting a game.
