Lo Duca faces gambling, infidelity allegations
In a divorce petition filed in late June, Paul Lo Duca's estranged wife accused the Mets' catcher of infidelity. His passion for horses has caused him to wrack up heavy gambling debts, according to a report in the New York Daily News.
Lo Duca brushed off the allegations made by 34-year-old Sonia Lo Duca — a former Playboy model — and spent a carefree day at Saratoga Race Track.
"I talk to my wife every day," Lo Duca reportedly said after he was spotted at the track. "We get along great."
Lo Duca, a four-time All-Star, and his wife were scheduled to discuss their divorce on WFAN Radio in New York Tuesday.
And it appears that divorce isn't the only thing on Lo Duca's mind. Unnamed sources told the Daily News that Lo Duca has gambling debts so large that the Mets know about them.
As the newspaper points out, Major League Baseball's morals clause does not prohibit a player from gambling at casinos or race tracks. But the league gets concerned when one of its players runs up unmanageable gambling debts.
Lo Duca insisted to The News on Monday that he only gambled on horses, never on sports.
He would not discuss his wife's allegations, saying only, "We decided to get a divorce six months ago and I wish it didn't happen, but it happens."
The two were married prior to Lo Duca's first full season in the majors, in which he hit .320 for the Dodgers. The following year, in 2001, she posed for Playboy's Sexy Girl Next Door spread.
Standing outside her Spanish-style mansion in a gated community in San Antonio, Texas, Sonia Lo Duca said on Monday night, "I just want my privacy. I just want what's best for my daughter."
According to the Daily News, the petition filed by Lo Duca's wife specifically asks the court to prevent Lo Duca from incurring any indebtedness, making withdrawals from accounts or entering safe deposit boxes.
The document also seeks to prevent him from "consuming alcohol" within 24 hours before seeing his 21-month-old daughter or having "intimate" overnight guests when the child is present.
While nothing (in the divorce document) targets Lo Duca's gambling; his love for horse racing is no secret.
Lo Duca is thought to have five horses in training — four in California and one in New York.
