    Internet gambling bill faces delays

    Thu Jul 20, 2006 12:14 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A bill to ban Internet gambling is facing some opposition in the U.S. Senate and will not come up for a vote before the chamber takes its August recess, an aide to the U.S. Senate majority leader said on Thursday.

Backers of the legislation had hoped to push it through the Senate quickly this month following the arrest in the United States of David Carruthers, the chief executive of BETonSPORTS , on charges of racketeering and conspiracy.

Carruthers is scheduled to appear at a hearing in U.S. district court in Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday to determine if he must remain in jail until his trial.

However, an aide to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said that lawmakers were still working on the bill and would not be able to hold a floor vote before the Senate recesses for its August vacation.

The Senate bill is virtually identical to legislation overwhelmingly approved earlier in July by the U.S. House of Representatives. It would prohibit most forms of Internet gambling and make it illegal for banks and credit card companies to make payments to online gambling sites.

The Republican-backed bill has been criticized by some as an election-year appeal to the party's conservative base.

Supporters of a crackdown on Internet gambling say legislation is needed to clarify that a 1961 federal law banning sports betting also covers an array of online gambling.
Still time to make some noise! Contact your representative every day if necessary. Rattle that cage!

Gotta love the US Congress. Let's hope this gets held up forever. How long is their recess anyways?

This is very good news. Had it come to the floor within the next week, it would have passed.

DH is right. We have likely been given a reprieve and that doesn't mean we should sit back and relax now. It is important that a larger unified voice be presented to Congress in support of online gambling if we want to continue operating within this industry in its current state. If this bill passes, it is unquestionable that the industry will change. The industry won't go away but it will be different and its likely that it will be less lucrative and more risky for players such as ourselves.

I just called my Senator again, and also wrote him a letter.

I will continue to make all the noise I can.

                  Here's the breakdown:

                  Recess: August 4th
                  Reconvene: September 5th
                  Adjournment Date: October 6th

Nothing before the recess, so that leaves 24 business days!
By all accounts, the bill at present isn't high on the priority list.

Can we raise enough hell to bridge 24 days?!

Net Gambling Bill Moves Through Senate

A bill that would ban Internet gambling may be voted on in the U.S. Senate before the August recess, however it faces tough opposition and charges that it is an election year pander to the Republican base. Aides for Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said Thursday that lawmakers were working on the bill attempting to assure its passage, and had not given up on trying to get the bill through before lawmakers break during the month of August.

                      Thanks for reminding us. lol

I wasn't going to call my senator today, not again, but this convinced me to do so anyway. The secretary taking my message actually sounded impressed.

                      Today I focused on:
                      1) BLOCKING websites, being part of the legislation. Censureship we might expect in China, but certainly not in America.

                      2) The socalled motive of 'protecting Americans from themselves'. I pointed out that, if the legislation passes, Americans actually stand to lose billions of dollars, because when offshore bookmakers go under, they won't be able to pay us the money in our accounts. Fine form of 'protection'.

Monday I'll call again with my 'lecture' about corporatism (fascism), accompanied by quotes from Mussolini and Abraham Lincoln.
