I post this thread from another forum for discussion. I would love to hear "this can't happen" but i am worryed it can.
The internet gambling bills are set to be voted on in the House this week and I think most gamblers just don’t get whats at risk. For all of those who think they have solutions such as “Ill just continue to gamble online”, “relax, they cant enforce it”, or “Ill send via **, use a proxy server, open a Canadian bank account, and call my uncle in Bulgaria to bet” – haven’t thought deep enough in to the ramifications of this bill passing.
Here’s the bottom line. Without the average Joe Sixpack American bettor, the offshore industry will have to change. We are all used to talking on these forums and being surrounded by people who take this hobby seriously, but the average bettor in the US that keeps the sportsbooks as they are is not willing to break the law to place a bet. Period.
So what happens when 90% of the US market is taken out of the offshore equation? What does it mean for the industry? What does it mean to you and me who want to continue betting?
It means disaster. We need Joe Sixpack desperately.
After years of instability, we finally have an offshore industry that is somewhat trustworthy, stable, and monitored with information readily available. This industry relies on the average American bettor. Take away Joe Sixpack – and you will have offshore chaos. Closings, mergers, books disappearing in to the night.
Now take away the monitoring sites who wont be able to operate because their advertising is cut off and their viewership is lower. Less bettors in the US means less advertising dollars spent by the books, and SBR, the RX, and Covers are all going to be hurt.
So if you are one of the lucky ones whose book has not shut down, what do you think your lines look like? Forget ever being able to bet on in game home run derby bets or if Edgerrin James will score a TD or not – the spreads to games will be totally different without the American public betting on it. Also, forget getting any sizable wager down because limits will shoot down due to low volume and high risk.
Reduced juice? GONE. No volume means no reduced juice. Back to at least -110 on everything and 20 cent baseball lines.
Your bank wont allow transfers with Neteller anymore, CC’s are a thing of the past, and you face criminal prosecution for aiding and abetting a criminal enterprise if you figure out a way to send ** or a cashiers check. How are you going to get your money back?
So here you are after this bill passes. You have no information as to the health of the book you are going to send money to, you are committing a criminal action to bet, the chances of you finding any value in lines has gone drastically down, reduced juice is gone, and you have to put money in a bottle and throw it off of the beach to do a financial transaction.
Bet with a local? Sure. For those that don’t mind paying -110 and going back to all of the hassles of calling at certain times and all of the other BS. You cant make money this way.
So before you throw out how the govt cant enforce this and your naïve solutions – please think it through. Everything will change, and on levels you haven’t even considered. The chances of being profitable betting will decrease immediately - and the risks shoot through the roof.
