NBA Players’ Union Opposes Anti-Flopping Rule With $30,000 Fines
By Erik Matuszewski on October 04, 2012

The National Basketball Association players’ union said it will contest a rule fining players as much as $30,000 for falling to the court with the intent of having a foul called on an opponent.

The so-called anti-flopping rule will be enforced beginning this season, NBA Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Stu Jackson said yesterday in a statement.

“Flops have no place in our game -- they either fool referees into calling undeserved fouls or fool fans into thinking the referees missed a foul call,” Jackson said.

The union said it would file a grievance with the league office and an unfair labor practice charge with the U.S. National Labor Relations Board.

“The NBA is not permitted to unilaterally impose new economic discipline against the players without first bargaining with the union,” Executive Director Billy Hunter said in a statement. “Any monetary penalty for an act of this type is inappropriate and without precedent in our sport or any other sport.”

The NBA’s board of governors and competition committee said any player determined by video review to have committed a flop will first receive a warning. Further violations will result in fines and possible suspension, with discipline starting at $5,000 for a second case and escalating to $10,000, $15,000 and $30,000.
    Draw Fouls

The league defined flopping as a physical act that appears to have been intended to cause the referees to call a foul on another player.

“The primary factor in determining whether a player committed a flop is whether his physical reaction to contact with another player is inconsistent with what would reasonably be expected given the force or direction of the contact,” the NBA said in its statement.

The league said players moving to a spot to draw an offensive foul and minor physical reactions to contact won’t be treated as flops.

A player who violates the rule six times or more would be subject to increased fines and possibly a suspension, the league said. A separate set of penalties for playoff games will be announced later.

Good and bad. While I like the idea of them doing something to curtail the flops, they are also saying it will be ruled on after the game.

So if lebron James flops and they call a foul but go back later and rule he flopped, do they confess they made a mistake? Do u see where this is headed.

I disagree with subjective part. In slow mo you can easily determine what's a flop and no flop. Most of these guys are straight beasts and it's not easy to get these guys on the ground with a simple post up. The charges where a guy shifts over in the lane and sacrifices there bodies won't be called as flops.

The flops they fine for will be very blatant, trust me. There will be no controversy.

Having said that, NBA players wipe their ass with this kind of loot. No one is gonna be thinking about this rule when it's game 6 of the Western Conference Finals and you need a play.

theyre going to review stuff after the games, refs arent involved at all and that tells me the NBA is semi serious about it. It also makes me think they know the refs are crooked and play favorites with certain players. Which everyone already knows anyway.

How about some guy taking three dives in a game and not hearing a single whistle, then getting a bill for 20K in the mail, thats pretty classic. Then after 6 he gets a notice he is suspended for a game. Not sure if the OP mentioned that little tidbit or not, but after 6 they can start getting game suspensions. I doubt it hods up but I hope it does.

They get paid millions, work a few hours a day, do whatever they want, tell their coaches and bosses to fukk off..... and (gasp) they enforced a dress code (ie, you can't dress like an inmate or like you're wearing a shower curtain draped over your body) that sent the brothers into an epic panic ......

can we get Al Sharpton on the case here? the NBA is becoming ridiculous!!! they encokkroachring on ours rightz an sheet!!!

Here's where you're theory might be wrong...

The blame for the rise in flopping is often aimed at the international players, such as Divac, who came to the NBA after growing up watching soccer, in which falling down in hopes of drawing a foul is part of the game. Denver's Danilo Gallinari, an Italian, believes that's unfair.

"I don't know why everybody just talks about European flopping," he said. "I don't know where this thing comes from. We flop as much as other players all around the world flop. I don't know why everybody keeps saying that Europeans are soft or Europeans flop. I don't know."

Exactly. If flopping in a game helps win a game in any way (which is should due to the turnover or free throw shots) it's worth a lot more than $30,000.

Like 4 years ago they implemented a rule saying if your flopping on purpose youd get a technical foul. Not 1 tech has been called in 4 years. So whats point of this rule?

I think the difference is calling a flop in a game puts too much pressure on the referees to make the call in the heat of the moment. These fines will likely be handed out after the review is done upon completion of the game.

does this hurt the win totals on teams with known floppers like griffin, ginobili, and harden??

how many fractions of a win does this hurt those teams?

I love the rule. I'm tired of guys going for academy awards in order to gain an advantage. all this acting shit has got to stop. It's ruining the game. I actually turned off several games last year because of how easy the refs are influenced by bullshit acting. Play ball and quit crying about calls.
