    Neighborhood games.

You might be 9 playing against 13 year olds. Hey, guys might be trying to impress their girlfriends by creaming you. Guys got hurt, but not often. Broken collar bones. Broken arms. Sometimes, but not the norm. Parents stared, and were not happy, but they let kids be kids.

I'm not posting this as a hypothetical. I'm 52. This is the way we lived as kids.

I don't see this anywhere anymore. Youngsters, tell me what I am missing?

    is it better now?

In high school we played every Thanksgiving Day. My friends still do but I haven't in the past 5 years or so. Junior year we played a lot. Miss it.

        I have eyes.

My kid plays video games, and is mad as hell when I have no athletic skills any more and no clue, and can still kick a soccer ball past her. I just want to know if anybody personally KNOWS what I describe here. As an 11 year old, I think I invented all the strategy that now exists everywhere in football. And I ain't even getting into baseball and basketball.

different game back then, kids these days would wind up killing each other. Not many injuries in the good ole days, we all knew how to play under control.

Kids are too wimpy to play any type of physical sports these days. A bunch of broken arms, legs, spines, and ankles waiting to happen today. Years ago it made men of boys, now it makes boys into crybabies.

Kids are pussies nowadays. Not all their faults though cause parents are overprotective douchebags now too. Everything has to be supervised and regulated even something as simple as riding a bike. Kids have to put on practically a suit of armor by law just to go bike riding. Helmet, pads etc. not surprised at all they'd rather sit inside.

Kids and parents are total pussies. Like making kids wear fukkin helmets to ride bikes. We never wore helmets back in the day. If we saw a kid wearing a helmet we would make fun of them I'm sure.

If our society doesn't toughen up, all the contact sports will be dominated by the poor hard knocks kids.

Use to the hustle the neighborhood...literally going door to door ..to get kids for the football game. At one point, we had enough for 5 teams of 8 and we would run games simultaneously. I even managed to get a few baseball games going back in the day and if where you guys grew up was similar to where I did, you know that takes an impressive salespitch. Even back then, I really had to sell kids on having fun...of course, after they showed, they realized how fun it is. These days, it's got to be even harder for the few kids that would want to get a game going.

Senior in college and I still get together with my boys and play pickup football every Sunday in the fall and softball when it's warm. Very easy to see the new try hards though, usually first ones on the sideline hurt

                              Played on snow and ice.

Even played it for Gym Class. It was nuts. Slammed this kids head into the hard field, he was out for a week from school.

Hit my head on ice once too, hurt for a few minutes, kept on playing. It was tough to get a game going even back then.

When you're 15, you're sore as hell for 24 hours after a good game of neighborhood football. When you're 22 it'ls like 4 days. Don't try playing once you're any older than that.

I saw some injuries... Broken collar bones, a chipped tooth, a dislocated thumb and a neck injury that required major surgery (bone taken from leg, put into neck, kid was never allowed to play football again obviously). But other than the neck injury, nothing to worry about.

We would always play the first big snowfall. Snow games were fun.

Never played on ice though. WTF were you idiots thinking?

I remember in gym class when some kid was not paying attention or talking when our teacher was talking, the teacher threw a football really hard into the kids face.

                                    Pay attention son.

Teacher was a 5'10, 240 lb juice head who played University Football.

Probably be a lot of sueing if something like that happened now.

political correctness is total bullshit.... the insurance companies have legislated everything so that they hardly ever have to pay claims.... Bike helmets, seat belts, child seats (I like this one, but just saying), freaking out when kids play backyard football, .... Airport security( PC issue more than insurance), ....... Backyard football is awesome !!!!

My Dad would go watch a local semi-pro Rugby tourney every year. My younger brother and I would go with him and after watching the games for a while we'd get bored and head down to the back fields. We'd be the only white kids playing and whenever we'd get the ball it'd be "bash the white cxxts". It was fun as hell though.

From ages 9 to 13 I played sports virtually every single day. Are there any kids that still do this? Speaking of 9 year olds playing the 13 year olds... when I was 13ish my buddy(same age as me) and I would go to the local park where there were usually a handful of kids a couple years younger than us playing Baseball and we would challenge them to a game. There were usually around 10 of them. To add incentive... we told them they could tell us to hit either left or right handed. I'm left handed but I prefer to hit right and my buddy was right handed but preferred to hit left. I don't think they ever figured this out. Needless to say.. we crushed them every time. Good times... I think the age of 12ish is when I enjoyed playing sports the most. It's a shame so many kids today are missing out on it.

Neighbor kid when I was young (in the 80's) got bumped off his bike, hit his head...2 weeks later, dead from a brain bleed.

Less cars & kids on the roads when we were young. Plus these stats and news accounts didn't make it to most of us since there was no internet reporting it, nor was there a dozen "news" channels on top of the 500 entertainment ones.

                                            Different world now.

Sort of reminds of a game we played called "smear the queeer," or "kill the qurterback", or just "throwback," where the 10 or so kids were playing and one person tossed the ball back into them and you tried to get the ball and maneuver your way against them to a touchdown while they fought to bring you down in a brutal fashion. Once you got smeared (usually) or managed to score, you threw the ball back and all over agian and the sequence resumed.
