FIVE-Star Carolina +3 over ST LOUIS – The Panthers got their
first win of the season last week against the 49ers. Matt
Moore was 28-of-41 with two TDs. Carolina had 379 yards of
offense and 36:05 of possession time, allowing their defense to
catch their breath. This team is a lot better than their 1-5 record
indicates and we think they’ll extend their winning streak to two
    games here.
Carolina is a perfect 9-0 ATS (+8.3 ppg) the week after a straight
up win at home in which their completion percentage was at least
ten points higher than their season-to-date average. In addition,
the Panthers are 8-0 ATS on the road the week after they had at
least three times as many passing yards as rushing yards at home,
covering by an average of 12.6 ppg.
The Panthers have been underestimated when they are a dog
off a win as a dog. Carolina is 8-1 ATS in franchise history when
they are a dog off a win as a home dog, with their only ATS loss
coming in 1995, their first season in the league, when they lost
31-10 to the 49ers getting 14’. In last season’s lone active date,
the Panthers demolished the Giants 41-9 as a 8’ point dog the
week after upsetting the Vikings 26-7. The Rams should be easy.
St Louis was in position to chalk up a road win last week as
they were up 17-3 in Tampa in the second quarter. However,
they were scoreless thereafter and lost 18-17 to drop one game
below 500 on the season. Losses like this can be disheartening
to poor teams, who rarely get an opportunity to win. St Louis is
0-8 ATS after a loss against a non-divisional opponent in which
they were winning at the end of the third quarter. The Rams have
lost these eight games straight up by an average of 22 points and
have failed to cover by an average of 17.6 ppg. In their last active
date, week 7 2009, they lost 42-6 to the Colts.
We also have a league-wide, multi-season system that we have
used many times in the past. It involves a team that is off a loss
as a road dog in which they were winning at the half. These are
strong play-against teams. Specifically, NFL teams are a com-
bined 1-29 ATS when they are at home after a loss as a road dog
to a non-divisional opponent in which they were winning at the
half, as long as they are not laying more than eight points. Last
week this won cashed on Monday Night, with the Giants over the
Cowboys, as Dallas was at home off a loss as a dog in Minnesota
in which they were winning at the half.
