I still have to question is effectiveness even though he faces Detroit.
Portis is expected to play with injury
Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis bruised or sprained his right knee against the New York Giants on Sept. 23 rather than having a flare up of the tendinitis that sidelined him for the preseason.
After Monday's practice, coach Joe Gibbs assumed Portis sat out because of "soreness that came out of the game" and tendinitis.
Yesterday, director of sports medicine Bubba Tyer provided a clarification: same knee, different injury.
"In the first quarter of the game, he fell on his knee and bruised the inside of his knee, and that's what we're treating," Tyer said. "He's got a contusion-slash-sprain that if you have to classify it would be a Grade I. We're taking it day to day, and our hope is that he'll be ready to play on Sunday."
Portis declined to talk with reporters at Redskin Park yesterday. But on his weekly paid appearance on WTEM (AM-980) yesterday, Portis said he injured the knee in the second quarter of the Giants game.
Tyer said the knee injury wasn't severe enough to keep Portis off the field for the final drive. The Giants stopped Ladell Betts twice from the 1-yard line to preserve the 24-17 victory.
"On the sideline, when we're looking at an injury, we make a decision on if he should be in there or shouldn't be in there," Tyer said. "That wasn't discussed with Clinton [during the final drive]. There was never any discussion about holding him out."
