Chris Henry threatened to "jump off the truck and kill myself" just before that very scenario played out on a street in Charlotte, N.C., an eyewitness told the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Henry, 26, died of massive head injuries at 6:36 a.m. Thursday, less than 24 hours after the incident, which police describe as a domestic dispute with his fiancee, who is the mother of their three children.
Lee Hardy lives in the neighborhood where Henry and Loleini Tonga were staying -- ostensibly while making preparations for their March wedding. They were in Charlotte while Henry was on injured reserve from the Cincinnati Bengals.
According to the Enquirer, Hardy:
Police have not elaborated on the "domestic dispute" or pressed charges. Tonga was never taken in custody.

According to the Enquirer, Hardy:
... was trimming his trees on a 15-foot ladder as he watched the yellow pickup truck zoom past him -- with Henry in the bed and Tonga at the wheel.
"He was banging on the top, on the doors, screaming at the lady, 'We need to talk,' " Hardy said.
"He said, 'If you take off, I'm going to jump off the truck and kill myself,' " Hardy said.
Hardy said he was less than two feet from Tongas' driveway when the pickup drove past. He said it was going about 25 to 30 mph.
Hardy said he then heard a noise from down the street and police sirens.
