Kickoff Weekend opens with Steelers taking on Titans
Dana Point, CA (Sports Network) - The defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers will open the 2009 NFL season on Thursday, September 10 at home against the Tennessee Titans.
The NFL announced its prime time games for the 2009 Kickoff Weekend, as well as this year's Thanksgiving Day slate, at its annual meeting in California.
In a tradition that began in 2004, the previous year's Super Bowl champion will again host the season-opening game on Thursday night. The Steelers won Super Bowl XLIII with a thrilling 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Tampa.
Pittsburgh will face the team that had the best record in the NFL during the regular season, as the Titans were 13-3 and captured the AFC South title before losing to Baltimore in the divisional playoffs.
The other prime time games for Kickoff Weekend will feature an NFC North battle between Chicago and Green Bay at Lambeau Field on Sunday night, while the Monday night doubleheader will feature four teams from the old American Football League to help celebrate the 50th anniversary season of the NFL's former rival.
Buffalo will visit New England in the opener of the Monday twinbill, while Oakland will host San Diego in the nightcap. All four teams began play in the AFL's inaugural campaign of 1960.
There will be three games on Thanksgiving for the fourth straight season. The Lions, despite many objections following their disastrous 0-16 season, will continue to host the Turkey Day opener and will welcome Green Bay to the Motor City. Oakland, making its first Thanksgiving appearance since 1970, will visit Dallas in the late afternoon time slot, and this year's night game will take place in Denver with the Broncos hosting the New York Giants. It will be the first Thanksgiving Day game in Denver since 1963.
