Haslam Horsesh*t Letter to Season Ticket Holders
Loyal Browns Fans,
We wanted to reach out and connect with you regarding our news last night that we relieved Coach Chudzinski of his coaching duties.
As we communicated in our press conference, there is an urgency for success. There is an urgency to create a winning football team not only next year but for years to come. As we watched this season evolve, we were not seeing progress, not just in the win-loss column but in building the right foundation. In fact, we were taking a disconcerting step backward. We need to achieve significant progress to help us attain the consistently competitive team that we desire and you deserve.
We appreciate Coach Chudzinski and his passion for this city and this team, but we needed to quickly admit that a change was needed and move forward instead of maintaining the status quo. This is an important offseason and we wanted to make sure that we put ourselves in the best possible situation to succeed. We simply did not see enough to feel good about moving forward without the change we made yesterday.
As an organization, we have been dedicated to improving all aspects of the Browns, from substantial stadium renovations to enhanced facilities, and the team on the field. We have made progress in beginning to build a world-class football culture and that will establish a stronger foundation with our new head coach. Everyone in our building, including our players, understands the high expectations and need for accountability, and have seen our commitment and investment toward success.
As we continue to build this football team this offseason, the numerous draft picks we have will provide critical value, and our salary-cap space will give us the opportunity to impact our team in key areas. We will work tirelessly to secure a coaching staff that can help us win on a consistent basis.
While a difficult day, we feel strongly that this move will help us take the next significant steps in becoming a consistently successful and winning NFL franchise, a franchise that makes you proud.
Thank you for your continued support.
James A. Haslam
My Response
Dear Mr. Haslam,
Apparently, you are operating under the impression that the Browns faithful are as easily duped as the truck drivers that you regularly defrauded. We knew that you were an oil man, but candidly, didn't realize that you were such a committed snake oil man. I have been a season ticket holder since 1999 and I am strongly motivated, by your presence and incompetence, to divest myself of them. You make me long for Randy Lerner. He might have been apathetic and/or absent, but by comparison, I'll take that over an opportunistic huckster and profiteer. You would look a lot better (and more appropriately-clad) in an orange jumpsuit than an orange tie.
I wonder if you can succeed at a business not handed to you by Daddy and in which you cannot creatively and cynically swindle those less sophisticated than your hired con men. Time will tell. You do not have an urgency for success, and you are not committed to building a winner. You are not creating a winning culture nor are you creating a culture of accountability. You will not create a consistent and winning NFL franchise, and you will not make us proud. You've certainly made us anything but proud thus far.
You are an embarrassment, and like most men of stature, you apparently are the last to know. This likely is because you surround yourself with yes-men and sycophants who would not dare tell you how ridiculous they think you and your actions are (I note that there is little doubt that such a dynamic birthed the patented Pilot Flying J culture of cost-plussing). You are fooling yourself, and it would be humorous were you not making Cleveland professional sports even more of a punchline than it already was. I don't doubt that you are deluded enough to believe the excrement in which you are trafficking, but excrement it remains.
The only thing that you said in your letter that is correct is that Browns fans deserve better. What we deserve better than is you, Mr. Haslam. So long as you are at the helm, Browns season will begin and end in April. Do the right thing, sell the franchise to someone competent (and not under federal investigation) and leave town before you further define yourself as an unmitigated failure in this sphere. Daddy can't help you now.
Regards and Best Wishes for a Safe and Happy New Year to You and Yours,
