Chiefs' Green out indefinitely
Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Trent Green is resting at a local hospital and will be kept for a second night after leaving Sunday's 23-10 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on a stretcher in the third quarter with a concussion.
He will be kept as a precautionary measure despite all X-rays coming back negative. There is no time table set for his return to the field.
"Thank goodness he had no problems with his limbs," said Chiefs president and general manager Carl Peterson. "He does remember everything and every play up until the one he got knocked out in. He's doing fine. It will be a day-to-day, week-to-week evaluation by the doctors and that's how we're going to treat it...We're anticipating that Trent will get through this and get well and be back with us. At this point, though, I wouldn't put any time limit on it."
With 4:52 remaining in the third frame, Green was flushed out of the pocket by Cincinnati's rush and headed to the right of the field. Green then decided to keep the ball and scrambled five yards before beginning his slide.
As Green began his descent to the ground, Robert Geathers slammed into the quarterback, driving his upper body into the ground. Green remained down on the field for about 11 minutes before being placed on a stretcher and carted off the field.
"In my opinion I think it was a late hit," said Peterson. "I think the quarterback was, and this is my opinion, trying to slide, which he's instructed to do. The minute he starts that every defensive player is supposed to get off and back off any type of hitting or touching the quarterback. I think you saw later in our game Greg Wesley had an opportunity to do a similar thing with Carson Palmer, and when he went down he did an acrobatic flip to avoid him...It was obviously a very vicious hit and one that unfortunately Trent Green and the Kansas City Chiefs are paying the price for."
Before his exit, Green had completed 11-of-15 passes for 90 yards with an interception.
He was replaced under center by Damon Huard, who finished 12-of-20 passing for 140 yards with a touchdown pass. He was also sacked four times and fumbled twice.
