Dungy tells Letterman he's done with NFL
He was just a great regular season coach, far too mild-mannered and softspoken to light a fire under his team in the playoffs. Sure, one Super Bowl win, but it was bound to happen if the Colts played a tiny morsel of defense given that insane offense they had. And, they had to overcome an 18pt deficit to New England in the AFC Championship game to even get there.

    Good riddance, Dungy.

Sorry, Indianapolis. Former Colts head coach Tony Dungy says he’s done with the NFL.

The player-turned-coach-turned-author known for his humility and humanity has other important things to do.

At least that’s what he told native Hoosier David Letterman on Thursday’s “The Late Show with David Letterman.”

“My wife and I talked about it, we prayed about it a lot for the last four, five years and I really feel like I’ll just be able to do some more hands-on things,” said Dungy, 53, who announced his retirement Jan. 12. “Working with kids and hopefully doing that, I think I’ll get a lot of satisfaction out of that.”

Besides, returning to his old job in Indianapolis – where he led the franchise to its first Super Bowl title since moving from Baltimore in 1984 -- might be kind of hard, he told the CBS late-night talk show host in New York.

We're talking about football players not rocket scientists. A little brute energy goes a long way.

if you are on a nfl field with 290 lb dudes that run 4.6 40's running around hitting you and you need someone to yell at you to be "up" for the game you are in trouble. Many great coaches weren't rah rah Bill Cowher types. 90% or more of being a great coach has NOTHING to do with what you do on friday-hs, saturday-college, sunday-nfl. and that is more true as you go up the ladder.

now here is a knowledgable football person. This is more the stuff that separates a good coach from a great coach and a bad coach from a good coach ect.

Not if they are cheerleaders and make mean faces and jump up and down on the sideline. But this is the perception of the avg fan that has never really played the game, or any team sport at a high level
