EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants and Jets have announced agreement on a deal for a new stadium in the Meadowlands.
The talks between the teams, along with the governor's office, got some urgency earlier this month when the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority said it would consider scrapping a deal it reached with the Giants in April if the teams could not reach an agreement by a Thursday deadline.
The Giants this spring envisioned a new, team-owned 80,000-seat stadium, costing $800 million, replacing the state-owned Giants Stadium that is home to both teams.
At the time, the Jets were still attempting to build a stadium in Manhattan. After that effort failed in June, the Jets proposed building a 90,000-seat stadium with the Giants that would be integrated with Xanadu, a $1.3 billion retail and entertainment center being built at the Meadowlands.
Meanwhile, the Jets also made overtures to build a stadium in Queens, N.Y.
Both teams -- as well as the NFL and New Jersey -- would like a retractable roof, but the teams have said the $200 million cost is beyond them. A roof would allow the Super Bowl and Final Four to be played at the Meadowlands.
The Giants have tried to halt Xanadu, citing concerns over game-day traffic, but agreed Sept. 16 to jointly determine when Xanadu's restaurants would open on those days. A county ordinance prohibits the retail components from opening on Sundays.
The new stadium would rise near the existing stadium, which would continue to operate. The 75-acre development would also include restaurants and shops, as well as a "gateway" connecting it to Xanadu.
Of the 80,000 seats, 10,000 are planned as club seats, and 4,000 would be in some 200 luxury suites. All the club seats and suites would be on one side of the field, which Giants officials said would allow regular ticket holders to have access to some prime seats.
The efforts at the Meadowlands come as the complex prepares to lose other longtime tenants. The MetroStars of Major League Soccer, who play at the stadium, are about to build a stadium of their own in Harrison. Both pro teams that play at the Continental Airlines Arena are planning to leave: the New Jersey Nets to a new basketball venue in Brooklyn, N.Y., and the New Jersey Devils to a hockey arena being built in downtown Newark.
