Is it ever smart to make a futures wager?
The Falcons and Ravens are sitting at +610 and +890 respectively to win the Super Bowl. Obviously these aren't horrible odds and I'm thinking about putting a unit on each team. If either team hits I'd be up at least 5.1 units, and if neither team hits, it's only two units(no big deal).

My question is, how do futures bets fit in with the whole "sensible gambling" ideal? Is it ever "a good play" to wager on futures (even this late in the season) or should I consider this like a parlay, (ultimately unsustainable and only for fun)?

I only consider making them for fun. How can you seriously handicap a complete season in advance? Or even this late in the year it is essentially a parlay, picking a team to win their next two games. Take your favourite team and enjoy the entertainment! Just my opinion though, what do I really know...

at this point in the season you are only asking the team to win 2 games.

so yeah i think there is value on all 4 teams.

probably the most value is on the falcons since they are getting a home game and if they make the super bowl it will be in a dome as well

I think the way you are viewing it is pretty reasonable. Its only a unit. Obviously I wouldn't put any more than that on it and to consider it just kind of taking a shot for fun isn't such a bad thing.

You handicap futures bets (though using different types of info) just like you would any ATS game line. If a line looks way off, betting it could be a fantastic play. "Fantastic" is always relative these days, though. I would say there is no such thing. Just "good" or "bad" Plenty of good and bad future bets just like ATS bets.

No value on the Ravens. Maybe the Falcons, does anyone really see them as major dogs in the Super Bowl?

Put a unit on both, hopefully one wins, then you can hedge for a small profit.

It was already said here that it's basically a two game parlay at this point in the season which isn't bad. Need to do a little predicting however. Last week I took the Falcons future to win NFC at +250. They were -133 against the Seahawks and I thought that if they played SF they would be a pk. Then they blow the 4th quarter, survive the game, but the line is +4/+170 now. Would've potentially made a lot more by doing Falcons last week straight and then all in on the +170, effectively +404 from last week.
