NBA Top 5: Best road bets in basketball

Winning on the road in the NBA isn’t always a breeze. But it doesn’t take much to understand why the Top-5 road teams against the spread just so happen to be some of the best squads overall.
What separates these teams from the rest of the league is that they each do something a tad better away from their own arena than they do covers.com/articles/articles.aspx?theArt=218097#. Combined, these five are 56-20-1 ATS on the road.
Let’s find out why.
Dallas Mavericks - 12-1 ATS on the road
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban wasn’t happy to hear the input of Phil Jackson on the blow that Caron Butler’s absence will have on Dallas, calling the Lakers coach “Jeanie Buss’ boy-toy.” Oh, what fun it’ll be when the two teams meet next.
For now, the Mavericks can show Jackson and the rest of the league that they’re in capable hands, even with their third-leading scorer sidelined, by continuing to put up big numbers away from home. Dallas averages 100.8 points on the road - four points clear of what they put up at home. It makes them a rare team that is more dangerous in opposing teams’ buildings. Shawn Marion, who draws the task of replacing Butler’s production, currently averages 1.9 points more on the road.
New York Knicks - 13-4 ATS
If you’re going to play in Mike D’Antoni’s system, you better get used to shooting from long distance. The Knicks are tossing up 24.4 3-pointers a night, slightly behind Orlando for the NBA’s highest mark. What the Knicks do better than the Magic, however, is knock down more 3’s on the road.
New York averages a league-best 9.9 makes from distance away from Madison Square Garden, compared to 8.1 at home. With opposing teams’ game planning to slow down Amare Stoudemire in the paint, the Knicks have been content moving the ball around the perimeter and making teams pay from beyond the arc. Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari benefit the most, combining to average four 3-pointers per road outing.
San Antonio Spurs - 8-3-1 ATS
The Spurs may very well lead the league in lack of sexiness. They continually play the same brand of fundamental basketball that borders on boring at times, led by a humble star in Tim Duncan and a relatively vanilla supporting cast. But what they do manage to do is win, currently owning the league’s top record.
What makes the Spurs so tough on the road is that a good rebounding team becomes a great rebounding team away from home. San Antonio ranks second overall in road rebounding at 44.9 per night, including 12.4 of the offensive variety, as its total is three rebounds more than what it pulls down in San Antonio. Duncan accounts for much of the improvement with a 1.6 boost on the boards away from home.
Miami Heat - 12-6 ATS
Coming to a sold-out arena near you, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Zydrunas Illgauskas as “The Heatles,” James’ new nickname for his squad, based off the iconic rock group. Outlandish as it may be, James is right. The Heat are the best act to hit opposing cities in some time.
It’s definitely “A Hard Day’s Night” for home teams facing the Heat, who are already a great ballhawking team but become even better at it on the road. Thanks to the perimeter defense of James and Wade, Miami averages 7.2 steals away from home, over a full steal more than it produces at covers.com/articles/articles.aspx?theArt=218097# Arena. The way they’re going right now, the debate of who’s John Lennon and who’s Paul McCartney can be sorted out later.
Boston Celtics -11-6 ATS
Of the leading championship contenders, no team has been hit harder by the injury bug than the Celtics. They weathered the storm without Rajon Rondo and are now seeking to do the same with no Kevin Garnett.
Winning away from home will greatly help them do so. It shouldn’t be a problem considering Boston is the third-best road squad in the league. That can be chalked up to improved accuracy from 3-point range as well as an uptick in takeaways on defense. The Celtics shoot 41 percent from beyond the arc on the road, compared to just 32 percent at the Garden, while also boosting their steal totals from 7.5 to 8.4, which ranks fourth on the road in the NBA.Comment -

the injury report says questionable for wrist injury, san diego isnt good and doesnt play well on the road, theyve lost 3 in a row on their 5 game road trip. i like pepperdine to win this game but bell contributes alot so watch to see if hes playing or not closer to game time.
