NASCAR 80's driver James Neal - Former NASCAR driver pleads guilty police chase
Neal reached speeds as high as 140 mph on the Santa Ana (5) Freeway, Amormino said. The deputies, following department policy, gave up the chase because the infraction wasn’t serious enough and it would endanger other drivers, he added.

“Nobody will pursue someone at that speed,” Amormino said. “Even at 3 o’clock in the morning, there’s still traffic.”

The California Highway Patrol picked up the chase, but also lost sight of Neal, who was eventually caught because his engine blew up, forcing him to stop on the side of the road in San Diego County, near La Jolla, Amormino said.

Neal competed in NASCAR in the early 1980s, but never won a national race.

      from article:
for not having a front license plate on his Chevrolet Corvette, a minor infraction he could have settled without even a fine, Amormino said.

wonder how much time he will get now.....

His engine blew up. Maybe they should build better ones.

Talk about your ultimate ironies. A guy who gets paid to drive at speeds consistently over 200mph on the racetrack was busted for speeding going down the highway. Driver Tomas Scheckter got a speeding ticket only two nights before the Indy 500 on Sunday:

"Scheckter got a speeding ticket Friday night on Interstate 65 in Indianapolis, where the speed limit is 55 miles per hour. Police say it was difficult to clock Scheckter accurately because he was weaving in and out of traffic.

He was driving in excess of 100 mph via the local newspaper.

Scheckter could have been arrested on a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving but was instead given a ticket for driving at an unreasonable speed. The ticket carries a fine of $175 to $500."

Scheckter on his twitter page actually says he got preferential treatment: “they know who i am said normally i would be arrested but just gonna give me a ticket.” I guess it pays to be a racecar driver nobody outside of Indianapolis has heard of. In case you were wondering how he did, Scheckter finished 15th at the Indy 500.

Indy Police denied any special treatment was given I read in the local newspaper.

Sounds like James Neal has gone crazy.

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. -- A former NASCAR driver has been arrested for the third time in three weeks, this time for investigation of drug possession.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department said James Edward Neal was arrested Friday, hours after bailing out of jail on charges of attempting to rape a woman. Authorities said a bail bondsman who went to look for Neal saw methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia in his hotel.

The 56-year-old San Clemente man was arrested May 17 after leading deputies on a high-speed chase in a Corvette. Hours after completing sentencing on charges stemming from the chase, he was arrested Monday on suspicion of trying to rape a woman he had met just once.

Neal was a NASCAR driver in the early 1980s. Deputies did not know if he had an attorney.
