BIGGEST NIGHT OF WINGED SPRINT CAR RACING EVER AT SALEM SPEEDWAY SET FOR SATURDAY, APRIL 25th.
SALEM, IN, April 10 – What is being billed as the “biggest night of winged sprint car racing ever at Salem Speedway” is set to unfold on Saturday, April 25th. The Scott County Visitors Commission Winged Sprint Spectacular, presented by Must See Racing.com, brings to the famed high banks not one, but two of the Midwest’s premier pavement winged sprint car series.
The Michigan based Auto Value/Bumper to Bumper Super Sprint Series (AVSS) and the Hoosier Outlaw Sprint Series (HOSS) are set to share the high banks for a night of unprecedented speed and excitement.
“We are excited to be hosting what will certainly be the biggest winged sprint car event in the history of Salem Speedway,” said track general manager Richard Deaton. “We’re expecting the best of the best from the Hoosier Outlaw Sprint Series and the Auto Value Super Sprint Series. This is shaping up to be one of the marquee events of the season at Salem Speedway.”
Besides being the first combined show for the super-fast sprint car series at Salem, the event marks the kick-off of an exciting seven race TV schedule for Must See Racing during the 2009 season.
The tape delayed broadcasts, with veteran announcer Dave Argabright and expert analyst Tom Bigelow, will be aired on Comcast Cable throughout Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa. It will also be shown on the Must See Racing.com web site on a tape delayed basis.
“I can’t tell you how much everyone is looking forward to this event,” said Jim Hanks of Must See Racing, who was instrumental in putting the TV package together and creating the joint racing venture between HOSS and AVSS at Salem.
Former Salem winners, Aaron Pierce and Kevin Feeney, headline an expected entry list, which includes a mixture of wily veterans and young chargers.
“Pierce and Feeney definitely know the quick way around Salem Speedway,” said Deaton. “However, with the expected caliber of competition neither driver will be able to take anything for granted.”
Pierce, a veteran USAC Silver Crown and sprint car campaigner, will be trying to win three consecutive winged sprint car races at Salem. The Muncie, Ind., driver captured both the 2007 and 2008 Hoosier Outlaw Sprint Series “Calvin Gilstrap Classic” events at Salem.
Feeney, a three-time Salem winner, holds the one-lap track record at Salem. During the 2006 season the Oxford, Mich., driver posted a blistering lap of 14.377-seconds during time trials. That figures out to an average speed of over 138-mph.
Steve Stewart of Stewart Automotive & Transmission in Salem is offering a $1000 “bounty” to any driver that establishes a new one-lap winged sprint car track record during qualifications on April 25th. In the event that more than one driver lowers the track record, the driver posting the quickest time receives the bonus.
Other top drivers expected includes former HOSS champion Tim Cox of Park City, Ill., Jeff Bloom of Bangor, Mich., Ryan Litt of Ontario, Ca., Hank Lower of Angola, Ind., Jimmy McCune of Toledo, Oh., and Jeff Banyas of North Olmstead, Oh.
Sondi Eden of Crawfordsville, Ind., who became the first and only female to race a sprint car at Salem Speedway during a 2004 HOSS event, has also indicated her intentions of participating in the upcoming race. Eden, a former standout basketball player at Morehead State University, finished a very respectable fourth place in the 2004 feature event.
Michigan’s Chad Goff, Troy Underwood, Jim Swain and Kyle Flint and Indiana’s Eddie Kelley are also expected for the first open wheel race of the season at Salem.
Kelley, a Florida native and USAC veteran, is a former crew chief for Shelby Howard’s ARCA RE/MAX Series and Hooters Pro Cup Series teams.
Adding to the importance of the early season race for both HOSS and AVSS competitors is the fact that double points will be awarded by both racing organizations for the Salem event.
Sharing the high banks with the sprints on April 25th will be the Lucas Oil Super Stocks and Dave & Deb’s Winner’s Circle Street Stocks.
The Super Stocks opened the 2009 season on April 5th with Frank Kimmel II of Borden, Ind., winning the 50-lap main event and former track champion Todd Kempf of Huntingburg, Ind., finishing second. The April 25th race is the season opening event for the Dave & Deb’s Winner’s Circle Street Stocks.
Spectator gates open at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 25th, with practice at 3:30, qualifications at 5:45 and the first race at 7 p.m. (EDT). Sunday afternoon, April 26th had been designated the event rain date if needed.
Advance general admission tickets are priced at $15 for adults and $3 for children (age 7-12). Kids 6 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Advance reserved seat tickets are priced at $20 each. Advance tickets are available at the Speedway office or by calling 812-883-6504 or toll free 1-888-246-7223.
