Ok there are no dumb questions but here is a dumb question. When watching the races on TVG, in the upper left hand corner is a board. It shows the race, minutes to post and then three columns. One is post position and the next is odds and then there is a white column with black numbers that looks like it says EX or something and then a number or a dash. What is this third column?

That is the number of the horse you are playing to win. Then you look at the tote board and see the corresponding monies if you pick the correct horse second. Hope that explains. If not hit me back.

I wasn't even aware tvg offered free pp's.. I don't bet there at all and just use to watch races when I'm out and about

Maybe you guys can teach an old dog new tricks. Full disclosure though. I did pick the winners but I'm still not confident in myself so I only bet them to place or show but I feel like I'm learning the basics from you guys. Again thanks for the continuing education.

nice job but place and show no good..win and place what you should be doing whether you had a bad day or good one..the key is to bet an amount that you're comfortable with so you can withstand losing streaks cause they're inevitable doing this ..when you win you can make up for a lot of bad days in a hurry..it's a marathon not a sprint and you should worry less about daily results and more about long haul good results ..that's the mentality you need and imo the long term chase is the best part of this game..bad day today fine..back tomorrow. .another bad day ..back tomorrow ..the good days will happen

Probably a good question to ask STR in his thread. As for your 1st question not sure what you mean. You can always bet w/p on any given horse.

If you bet 2.00 on a horse to win/show would it pay the same as 1.00 on the same horse to win and 1.00 on the same horse to show or is the payout different? Or do you take the same horse to win and show or should it be two different horses? Again I may not be asking what I'm trying to ask. I'm about to confuse myself I think.

They are separate wagers. So if you bet $2 to win and $2 to show you get the corresponding payouts for each based on a $2 wager.

on the second question I don't use pace figures in those situations..I use pedigree and trainer stats more or less
.if I'm playing a dirt horse trying turf for the first time I want the dirt form to be average or below average..to me it's too easy to play good form on dirt and then it'll hold on the turf..I'm looking for a wake up call more or less. .do good form on dirt horses win in those situations..of course and I may play them once in a while but in general not what i'm looking for

you should not have as much to win on a horse like that vs say a 5 or 10-1..you are going to hit the lower odds much more frequenty and you're bet amount should reflect that.. $3 on a 50-1.. $10 on a 10-1.. $15 on a 5-1..figures are off the top of my head but in general that's what I would recommend

Understand what you are stating JBEX. But if Taylor has a small bankroll (Which I assume he does) to go a lot heavier on lower priced horses is not practical imo. I would not worry too much about bankroll mgt at this point. Keep it small, have some fun, and stay in the learning mode.

even at this stage of the game with a small bankroll you should be aware of this ..if your max win bet is say $5 I would not bet horses with higher odds than 20-1.. you're eating too much into the profits of the $5 win's on 3-1's and the $3 win's on 10-1's..if 10 is your max win bet 2-3 win on a 50-1 ok but if max is less no good

Appreciate both comments. I am actually a very tight conservative player when I go to the casino. I can walk from a craps table after two or three tosses and it doesn't bother me. I have preset bet limits and win/loss limits as well. JBEX actually addressed something I was wondering about. Seems like you can lower your "at risk" total by adjusting bets based on odds. I'll certainly keep that in mind. With that said, Easy your on the money also. I was thinking about maybe a 2.00, 3.00 and 5.00 limit based on odds but yes....Keep it small for now. No 15.00 wagers for me just yet. Maybe never This is a low budget production right now. Thanks for the input from both.

I've mentioned this before on here but there's a simple formula called the kelly criterion that applies to this..

%bet =edge/odds

assuming your edge is the same at all odds levels (which is not exactly true but good enought for this example ) than as the odds go up your % bet goes down..not saying you need to apply this now but just understand the concept for the long haul..even if you have no edge yet you have to bet size right at some point ..I know you hit the big price horse yesterday but in theory if your max bet is $5 win i'd stay away from 20-1+ horses..they'll eat too much into your reasonable $8-$20 horses ..jmo

really depends on how strong you feel about each one.. I'd say either only bet the 7-2 10wp or 15-15w... 7-2 5w using the latter as a hedge.. I wouldn't want to go 15w 7-2 5w 15-1 cause then it's kind of a bittersweet hit if the higher odds hit IMO.. don't like using the longie as a hedge
