    Question for Don Best users
Anyone ever use it successfully on an apple computer? Anyone UNABLE to use it on an apple computer?

I asked DB about this, and they were a little vague -- said they were "working twoards" getting the program compatible with apple products, but they also mentioned that there is an a "download available" that should make it compatible.

    Any input greatly appreciated.

I thought a Mac would have a different operating system -- something other than windows. No?

Yes, Mac OS X is the operating system a Mac uses (the hardware is capable of running other operating systems also, however, including Windows and Linux). I switched to SO from DB at some point last year. At that time, only the Java version (which has fewer features) of Don Best worked on Macs. To run the full DBS2K (which has since been replaced by DBS3), I had to run an app called Parallels, which allows you to run Windows inside Mac OS X (OS X also includes something called Boot Camp, which allows you to boot directly into Windows. Parallels allows you to run Windows and Mac apps at the same time [although the Windows ones do run a bit slowly]).

jglmartin: Thanks for the explanation and input. Makes sense. How has your DB experience been with Parallels? Are you reasonably certain that you're not at any disadvantage by using a Mac w/Parallels? Thanks again.

Well, I was running it on a 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo machine with 4 GB of RAM, and I didn't feel like I was at a disadvantage in terms of getting the line movements quickly; DBS2K ran totally fine, with no lag that I was aware of. It does slow your computer down a little when you use Parallels. For example, if you are just browsing websites or writing e-mails, etc., you probably wouldn't notice. But if were doing more CPU/RAM-intensive stuff, you might notice a bit. One good thing about Parallels is that you can set how much RAM you allocate to the 'virtual machine' where you are running Windows. You can also set it to use more or less CPU, so that if you are concerned that DB is lagging, you could allocate more CPU and RAM to Parallels, which would result in your Mac applications running slower. Overall, it really is going to depend on how fast your Mac is, but for me, it wasn't an issue.

Thanks! I tried to transfer you some points, but SBR won't let me give them to you. Weird.

What's the point of a line service when you can count the number of trustworthy offshorebooks on 2 fingers these days. Unless you reside in vegas what's the point ?????

Jgilmartins response is very accurate but I have found trying to run a virtual windows program on a Mac and Don best, in my experience and I do alot of film and music editing on a my mac, to be almost impossible and I have a 2010 Imac. A line service needs to be running constantly to be of any use and if you do any serious CPU/Ram intensive type of activities like music or film editing on a computer or even running movies, it can have a serious lag on your system. I just use sports options, its a great service and works great on a Mac.

Maybe Don best is developing something for the Mac but I highly doubt it, who knows how much investment and innovation apple will even be putting into their desktops in the future with all the other stuff they are into with ipads and iphone, etc. It seems like to me that Don best would have already developed something for Mac operating systems if they were really interested in that market.

Thanks, gregm. I don't do any of the RAM-using stuff you're talking about, or much else at all (other than open tabs with my various outs) while I use a line service. Also, I'm going to get one of those MacBook Pro notebooks. I think I'm going to get it today actually, and I'm going to get one of the upgraded processors (sorry, I don't know the proper computer terminology).

I'm going to try out DB on this Mac. I may also try out SO on the MAC, while running DB on my old (still very functional) PC, side by side -- so I can see which is faster. If I do this, I'll post the results here. I'll also post the results of the MacBook Pro compatibility with DB. Thanks to all who chimed in on this.
