Looking for a good Statistics book
I'm looking for a good Statistics/Data Mining book that would act as a good primer for research in gambling.

I'm definetely not looking for a basic book about sports betting, but rather something that digs deeper into things like Markov Models, Neural Nets etc...

Doesn't need to be exactly on the topic of sports, something that dealt with other probabilistic events might be applicable.

    Is there anything out there?

what is your familiarity with statistics? I would suggest something more focused on regression before you focus on markov models or neural nets. And for me regressions have always produced better results than neural nets, but thats maybe because i don't know how to use them properly.

Exploratory Data Analysis. Google it and you'll find a freebie book from the Gov't. Based on Tukey, a statistical demi-god.

I googled "exploratory data analysis", "John Tukey", etc. I found his book on Amazon.com for $60, but nothing free. The only thing I found for free was a wikipedia page with various links. I also went to the US govt publications website and did a search and found nothing.

Can you give us a specific link to this free governemnt publication? Thanks.

BTW, notice a bunch of engineers put it out, NOT the statisticians.

For basic statistics and probability, a really good book is "Statistical Models: Theory and Practice" by David A. Freedman. $40 or so from amazon.com. If you already have a very good background in statistics, another more advanced book is "Elements of Statistical Learning", by Hastie, Tibshirani and Friedman. Tibshirani has a PDF copy of the book here on his website:

                  which you can freely download.

RockyV, I'm not able to download the Freedman book, are you still able? I'm on a Mac, and may be a difference.

                      Thanks

Wreck, I could download it, but with typical Adobe "you got to download latest version" bullshit, that was twitchy in operation. I fvking hate Adobe. I keep hoping Steve Jobs will kill them with HTML5

Foxit will be your savior. Much safer than Acrobat/etc from Adobe (from a 0-day/exploit standpoint) and doesn't suck bags of dick by using way too much ram, processor, etc.

Plus, it wasn't made by Adobe.
