NFL Player News - Week of 7/27/20
Football Team | Alex Smith to PUP
Updating previous reports, Washington Football Team QB Alex Smith (leg) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Monday, July 27. He'll also undergo a physical Monday, and the team will see where he is.

Chiefs | Tyreek Hill makes big plays with regularity
Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill has gained at least 40 yards on 25 receptions since entering the league in 2016. The total is five more than any other player over that span.

Bears | Adam Shaheen trade compensation update
Updating a previous report, Chicago Bears TE Adam Shaheen was traded to the Miami Dolphins Saturday, July 25, in exchange for a conditional 2021 seventh-round draft choice.

Chargers | Joshua Kelley reaches deal
Los Angeles Chargers fourth-round draft choice RB Joshua Kelley agreed to terms on a four-year contract with the Chargers Saturday, July 25. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Kelley could become the #2 back on the team in short order if Justin Jackson can't stay healthy. Even if Jackson does stay healthy, Kelley could be the goal line back and get on the redraft fantasy radar this year.
    Link to story

Chargers | Two rookie WRs sign deals
Los Angeles Chargers fifth-round draft choice WR Joe Reed and seventh-round draft choice WR K.J. Hill signed four-year contracts with the Chargers Saturday, July 25. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Reed can be a viable WR/RB tweener and make the final roster with special teams contribution. Hill is an excellent route running slot receiver. The Chargers don't have much behind Mike Williams and Keenan Allen, so these are names to monitor in deep dynasty leagues.

Giants | NYG adding Chandler Catanzaro
Free-agent PK Chandler Catanzaro (Jets) agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the New York Giants Sunday, July 26, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Giants | Aldrick Rosas likely to be cut
The New York Giants are expected to release PK Aldrick Rosas soon, according to multiple sources.
Footballguys view: Rosas is out after a so-so 2019 and hit-and-run incident in the offseason. Chandler Catanzaro is in, but Joe Judge could also look to reunite with Stephen Gostkowski as Catanzaro is just a journeyman and no guarantee to be good enough to win the job.

Vikings | Dalvin Cook's agent denies saying his client will report
Updating a previous report, the agent for Minnesota Vikings RB Dalvin Cook said he had not talked to head coach Mike Zimmer about his client showing up to camp and ending his holdout, even though Zimmer had announced that Cook would report during a press conference Saturday, July 25.
Footballguys view: Cook apparently did talk to his position coach Kennedy Polamalu about showing up for camp, but for now we should still treat this as a holdout and draft accordingly.

    Tuesday Update

New England Patriots RB Sony Michel's (foot) status for the start of training camp is uncertain at this point, according to a source.

Buccaneers | Ke'Shawn Vaughn placed on COVID list
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Ke'Shawn Vaughn (illness) was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Monday, July 27.
Footballguys view: Vaughn is now going to have to quarantine and receive medical clearance before he can begin practicing. The rookie is a hard-charging running back who will compete with Ronald Jones for the top spot on the depth chart.
    Link to story

Vikings | Justin Jefferson on COVID list
Minnesota Vikings WR Justin Jefferson (illness) was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Monday, July 27.
Footballguys view: The first-round pick from LSU will have to wait to begin practicing. Jefferson must quarantine and receive medical clearance before he can hit the field.
    Link to story

Football Team | Derrius Guice gets the green light
Updating previous reports, Washington Football Team RB Derrius Guice (knee) was cleared for football activities Monday, July 27.
Footballguys view: Great news for Guice and the Washington Football Team here. We all know that Guice has incredible ability as a runner but he has had trouble staying healthy in the pros. Washington has a jam-packed backfield but Guice is set to be the top back...if he can stay off the injury report. Guice has a current ADP of RB34 (7.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Ravens | De'Anthony Thomas opts out
Baltimore Ravens WR De'Anthony Thomas was been placed on the voluntary opt-out list Monday, July 27, for the 2020 NFL season.
Footballguys view: The Ravens signed Thomas to a one-year contract earlier this after he spent about half the season with them in 2019. The voluntary opt-out includes a stipend of $150,000.
    Link to story
    De'Anthony Thomas player page

Football Team | Cody Latimer placed on Commissioner's list
Washington Football Team WR Cody Latimer was placed on the Commissioner's Exempt list Monday, July 27.
Footballguys view: Back in May, Latimer was charged with assault in the second degree, menacing, illegal discharge of a firearm, prohibited use of a weapon, and reckless endangerment. The veteran receiver is no lock to make Washington's final roster if/when he's off the list.

Rams | Cam Akers, three others agree to rookie deals
Los Angeles Rams RB Cam Akers, WR Van Jefferson, LB Terrell Lewis and S Terrell Burgess agreed to terms Monday, July 27, on rookie contracts. None of them were first-round picks, so the deals are standard four-year contracts with slotted financial terms.
Footballguys view: Akers is a talented rookie from Florida State who could emerge as the primary running back. He has swiftness and power to his game, and Akers does a good job of using his quick feet to make defenders miss. Rams coach Sean McVay has previously stated that he loves the RBBC the 49ers use, so expect guys like Darrell Henderson or Malcolm Brown to cut into the touches for Akers (if he wins the starting job). Akers has a current ADP of RB27 (5.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

    49ers | Raheem Mostert's deal gets reworked
Updating an ongoing story, San Francisco 49ers Raheem Mostert will receive extra incentives and a bonus in his reworked contract, per a source. No new years were added to his deal, and Mostert is under contract for two more seasons. He is due $2.575 million in base salary and can earn an additional $2.75 million via incentives and a $300,000 bonus.
Footballguys view: Mostert wanted a raise, not a huge one, but just a bump in pay and the 49ers have obliged. Now, we'll see how Mostert works in the 49ers backfield with Tevin Coleman being his biggest competitor for touches and playing time. Jerick McKinnon is now healthy and is going to get a chance to see what he can do as well. Mostert is the first 49ers back going off the board with a current ADP of RB29 (5.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

        Wednesday Update

Buccaneers | Tom Brady well ahead of curve
Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady is 'way ahead of the curve,' according to head coach Bruce Arians. 'He's a very bright guy - the terminology was the big thing,' Arians said. 'As we now get together starting tomorrow, we'll start to collaborate a little bit more. So yeah, I think he's in a great spot right now as far as that goes.'

        Raiders | Bryan Edwards cleared
Las Vegas Raiders WR Bryan Edwards (foot) has recovered fully from the broken bone in his foot that he suffered while working out for the NFL Scouting Combine and is 'ready to go,' according to Adam Caplan of Sirius XM NFL Radio.
Footballguys view: Edwards can be a big part of the Raiders passing game in the future. This season, the rookie will try to work his way into the mix behind Henry Ruggs III, Tyrell Williams and Hunter Renfrow.

Titans | Corey Davis starts on PUP
Tennessee Titans WR Corey Davis (undisclosed) was placed on the Active/Non-Football Injury list Tuesday, July 28.

Packers | Devin Funchess foregoes season
Green Bay Packers WR Devin Funchess opted out of the 2020 season Tuesday, July 28.
Footballguys view: Just another reason the Packers should have added a wide receiver early for QB Aaron Rodgers in the 2020 NFL draft. Ah, but we digress this is a tough move for the Packers as Funchess was expected to provide veteran depth and work in 3-WR sets this season.

49ers | Deebo Samuel goes on NFI list
San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel (foot) was placed on the Non-Football Injury list Tuesday, July 28.
Footballguys view: On Tuesday, 49ers GM John Lynch said it was "fair to say" Samuel "might" miss time in the regular season. Reports have speculated that Samuel could be out the first 3-4 weeks of 2020. This gives rookie first-round pick Brandon Aiyuk plenty of opportunity to shine as the best healthy WR on the roster.

Ravens | Marquise Brown in for huge jump?
Baltimore Ravens WR Marquise Brown is in line for a huge jump in 2020, according to quarterback Lamar Jackson. Brown has bulked up after an injury-riddled rookie season. 'I feel like he's going to have a huge jump, more than people may think,' Jackson said. 'He was hurt last year, people didn't know that, but he went out there and battled his tail off each and every game on a messed up foot. Now his full potential is going to show this year I feel. He's still young, but he's going to show off. My job is to get the ball out quicker, because he's a lot faster with that foot 100 percent.'

Bengals | Joe Burrow on track to start Week 1

          Link to story

Chargers | Tyrod Taylor to open camp as starter

Lions | T.J. Hockenson on COVID list
Detroit Lions TE T.J. Hockenson was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, July 29.
Footballguys view: Hockenson will have to pass tests after a quarantine period in order to get on the field for practice. He's got plenty of upside but only flashed for a game or so as a rookie in 2019. Hockenson is a TE2 for Fantasy GMs as we all wait for him to play up to that potential.

Lions | Kenny Golladay placed on COVID list
Detroit Lions WR Kenny Golladay was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, July 29.
Footballguys view: Golladay, like all other players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, will have to pass testing to get back to the practice field after a quarantine period. He'll be a primary target once again in the Lions passing attack and a borderline WR1 for Fantasy GMs in 2020.

Bills | Cole Beasley on NFI list
Buffalo Bills WR Cole Beasley (back) was placed on the Active/Non-Football Injury list Wednesday, July 29.
Footballguys view: Reports indicate that Beasley should be back in action soon. He'll work as the slot receiver with Stefon Diggs and John Brown doing work on the outside. Beasley has some flex appeal in deep PPR leagues.
          Link to story
          Cole Beasley player page

Chiefs | Damien Williams will not play in 2020
Kansas City Chiefs RB Damien Williams has decided to opt out of the 2020 season.
Footballguys view: Williams was set to be a big part of what the Chiefs do at the running back position. Now, rookie first-round pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire will be the primary back for the Chiefs and won't be splitting time with Williams. Fantasy GMs have moved the needle already, and Edwards-Helaire should be a first round pick in every draft from here on out.

Ravens | Lamar Jackson wants Antonio Brown on team
Free-agent WR Antonio Brown (Patriots) worked out with Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson this offseason, and Jackson said he still hopes the Ravens sign Brown.
Footballguys view: Brown is waiting for the league to make a decision on his playing status. He vacillates between wanting to play and retiring seemingly every week or so. We think Brown plays, perhaps for the Ravens (or Seahawks), once the league gives the green light.

49ers | George Kittle not close to deal
San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle isn't particularly close to a deal, according to sources.
Footballguys view: Kittle is in the final year of his rookie deal and the two sides have been talking. He showed up to training camp, so there is no holdout situation and we all know it's just a matter of time before the 49ers make Kittle the highest-paid tight end in the league.

          Dolphins | Tua Tagovailoa cleared
Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa (hip) has been cleared to practice without limitations, according to head coach Brian Flores.
Footballguys view: Tagovailoa could be the franchise quarterback the Dolphins have been searching for since the days of Dan Marino. Now cleared for all football activities, Tagovailoa will compete with veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick for the starting job. While Fitzpatrick has a ton of experience, he's no match for the skill level of Tagovailoa. We could see the rookie first-round pick starting for the Dolphins near the start (or right at the start) of the regular season.

                  Friday Update

Jets | Joe Flacco to PUP list
New York Jets QB Joe Flacco (neck) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Thursday, July 30.
Footballguys view: This was expected when the Jets signed Flacco. His status for the start of the regular season is unknown as he continues to recover from his neck surgery. If need be, Flacco could be placed on the PUP at the start of the regular season which would cause him to be out for the first six weeks.

49ers | Jeff Wilson Jr. goes on reserve
San Francisco 49ers RB Jeff Wilson Jr. was added to the Reserve/COVID-19 list Thursday, July 30.
Footballguys view: Wilson is going to have to pass testing once he's allowed to come back to the facility. He's competing for a spot in the 49ers RBBC and is near the bottom of the RB depth chart, even though we've seen Wilson flash talent in his pro career.

                  Buccaneers | LeSean McCoy financials
Updating a previous story, Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB LeSean McCoy's one-year deal is worth just over $1 million, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network Thursday, July 30.
Footballguys view: McCoy was not used by the Chiefs down the stretch last year as they made a run at the Super Bowl. Now, he'll get the chance to be a larger part as the Buccaneers are clearly in a Super Bowl window themselves.

Raiders | Devontae Booker hits COVID list
Updating a previous story, Las Vegas Raiders RB Devontae Booker was placed on the COVID-19 list Thursday, July 30.
Footballguys view: Booker is a good receiving back but has barely seen the field recently in his pro career. When cleared to practice, Booker is trying to earn a spot on the Raiders as a reserve behind starter Josh Jacobs.

Packers | John Lovett awarded to Green Bay
Kansas City Chiefs QB John Lovett was awarded to the Green Bay Packers off of waivers Thursday, July 30.
Footballguys view: Lovett is an interesting prospect. He's got 'QB' next to his name, but he can also be listed as a FB, H-back, etc. Lovett was actually thought to be the Chiefs version of Taysom Hill. They at least wanted to see if he could be a gadget quarterback like Hill has been for the Saints. Now, we'll see if the Packers want to use him that way.

Browns | Jarvis Landry on track for opener
Cleveland Browns WR Jarvis Landry (hip) is on track for the start of the regular season, according to head coach Kevin Stefanski. Landry is scheduled to undergo his physical later this week.
Footballguys view: Things are looking up for the Browns this year. The team wants to bounce back in 2020 and they've spent a lot of resources to build up the offensive line better. That means better things for QB Baker Mayfield which obviously has a trickle-down effect to guys like Landry. Fantasy GMs know what to expect from the veteran wideout. He's a WR2/flex play in PPR leagues who can be a plug-and-play every week starter.

Raiders | Henry Ruggs fully recovered
Las Vegas Raiders WR Henry Ruggs III (thigh) said he has fully recovered from the thigh injury he suffered during the offseason.
Footballguys view: Ruggs is going to be the no.1 receiver for the Raiders this year, at least that's the plan. He's got speed, speed and more speed and should play like the Raiders version of Tyreek Hill. Now, Ruggs is a rookie and will struggle at times so Fantasy GMs should look at him as a flex play with upside in 2020. His current ADP is WR44 (10.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Ravens | Baltimore not ruling out Antonio Brown
Free-agent WR Antonio Brown (Patriots) is a player the Baltimore Ravens are willing to consider, but he is dealing with off-field issues at this point, according to head coach John Harbaugh.
Footballguys view: The league has to make a decision on Browns availability. Once the legal stuff is dealt with and the league says he can play, Brown should latch on with a team quickly. He's caught passes from QB Lamar Jackson this offseason and the superstar quarterback has pushed for Brown to be added. We'll see if the Ravens get the deal done...if/when Brown is cleared to play.

Titans | QB a fan of Darrynton Evans
Tennessee Titans RB Darrynton Evans has impressed QB Ryan Tannehill with his receiving ability. 'Catching the football, really natural,' Tannehill said. 'When you see a running back catch the ball naturally, whether they're coming out of the backfield or split out wide, it definitely adds another element to the offense and can give defenses a hard time.'

Updating a previous report, free-agent RB Jeremy Hill (Patriots) is expected to sign with the Las Vegas Raiders as long as he passes his physical and tests negative for COVID-19, according to a source.

Bengals | Joe Burrow officially signs
Cincinnati Bengals first-round draft choice QB Joe Burrow officially signed a four-year contract with the Bengals Friday, July 31. Official financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Burrow could be the Bengals franchise quarterback they've been searching for. He's incredibly accurate as a passer and his pass placement is among the best of anyone who throws a football. Burrow does a great job of putting the ball in place where his receivers can make the most after the catch. He's got some talented pass-catchers around him at the wide receiver position and RB Joe Mixon is there to soften up defenses. Burrow is a QB2 with upside for Fantasy GMs in 2020.

                        Broncos | Jeff Heuerman released
Denver Broncos TE Jeff Heuerman was released Friday, July 31.
Footballguys view: The writing was on the wall for quite some time. Heuerman rarely stayed healthy for the Broncos and became mostly just a blocker when he was on the field. He's a veteran with some experience but we don't expect the market to be hot after his services. The Broncos move on with Noah Fant as the starter, Nick Vannett (Heuerman's college teammate) as the backup and primary blocker, plus rookie Albert Okwuegbunam as a potential red-zone threat.

Raiders | Vegas meets with Jeremy Hill
Free-agent RB Jeremy Hill (Patriots) recently met with the Las Vegas Raiders, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Hill hasn't been on the field for a regular season game since 2018. He's a classic power back who gives the team more veteran depth. Josh Jacobs is the starter and we'll see guys like Jalen Richard, rookie Lynn Bowden and veteran Devontae Booker compete for snaps (along with Hill) and a pass-catching role.

NFL | Antonio Brown does not plan to appeal
Updating previous reports, free-agent WR Antonio Brown (Patriots) has accepted his eight-game suspension and is not expected to appeal the suspension, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Brown just wants to play in the NFL. We'll see if he can not be disruptive in any manner if/when a new team picks him up. Ravens QB Lamar Jackson has been pushing for the team to add Brown. The Seahawks could also have interest as Brown has caught passes from QB Russell Wilson this offseason.

Bears | Mitchell Trubisky believes he has improved
Chicago Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky said he worked with a quarterbacks coach this offseason and worked on improving his footwork and mechanics.
Footballguys view: Trubisky needs to prove it on the field. While other first-round QBs from his class (Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes) are superstars in this league, Trubisky is looking more and more like a bust. The Bears have brought in competition this offseason as veteran Nick Foles will push Trubisky for the starting job. If he's improved, Trubisky needs to show it in practice and win the job outright. Then, he needs to play better in games...oh yeah, and win.

NFL | Antonio Brown suspension starts Week 1
Updating a previous report, free agent WR Antonio Brown (Patriots) begins his eight-game disciplinary suspension in Week 1 of the 2020 season, regardless if he has signed with a team or not, per a league source.
Footballguys view: More clarity on the Brown situation. A team like the Ravens or the Seahawks might be interested in signing Brown to get him into training camp. Once the regular season begins, Brown would have to stay away from the team facility. Getting him signed in the near future would give him about a month to prepare with his new team before serving the 8-game suspension.

Texans | Deshaun Watson, GM talking extension
Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson and his representatives are talking with general manager Bill O'Brien and the team on a contract extension. 'We're working hard,' O'Brien said Friday, July 31. 'We want him here a long time.'
Footballguys view: Watson and the Texans brass have been talking since April. They didn't get a deal done before Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes reset the market, and it will be interesting to see how all quarterback deals are impacted by that contract. Watson is under the team's control through the 2021 season as they picked up his fifth-year option.

Chiefs | Damien Williams out for family reasons
Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Damien Williams opted out of the 2020 season because his mother has been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.
Footballguys view: Williams chose to opt out for the 2020 season and the Chiefs move forward with rookie RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire as their starter. With Williams out, Edwards-Helaire is moving up draft boards and should be a late first-round pick in any format.

Eagles | No constraints for Mile Sanders?
Philadelphia Eagles RB Miles Sanders doesn't need his number of touches monitored, according to a recent statement made by running backs coach Duce Staley. 'You put him in and let him go,' Staley said.
Footballguys view: The Eagles have not added any veteran back yet, like a Devonta Freeman, so Sanders is in line to get a majority of the touches in the backfield. They've got Boston Scott as a change-of-pace back to work with Sanders in the backfield but all things are pointing to Sanders getting plenty of touches -- with some reporters speculating around 18 touches per game for Sanders. He is a RB1 for Fantasy GMs in 2020.

Eagles | Carson Wentz bulks up
Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz has visibly bulked up in the offseason, according to beat writer Paul Domowitch, who wrote that Wentz's biceps and chest were bigger. 'This offseason, I was really able to get after it and work out a little harder in my gym and all those things,' Wentz said. 'I haven't gained anything insane weight-wise. But I have definitely gained some weight. I feel really good with where I'm at.'
Footballguys view: Wentz is adding more body armor so he can be more durable as the season goes on. Eagles GM Howie Roseman has previously stated that he wants a more vertical passing attack in 2020. That means Wentz is going to have to stand tall in the pocket as those vertical routes develop. Having more muscle on his frame, so long as he's not too bulky, is a good thing for the young quarterback.

If other sports survive, then NFL has the best chance of being the only sport to play all games at originally scheduled dates once regular season starts. NFL does not need fans, it makes millions from TV deals.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday, Aug. 1.
Footballguys view: Stafford becomes the first quarterback in the NFL to land on this list. The COVID-19/Reserve list is designated for players who test positive for COVID-19 or have been in contact with someone who has the virus. We'll now see Stafford quarantined for a couple of weeks and then re-tested before he can get to practice with the team.

Cleveland Browns TE David Njoku is no longer seeking a trade and is ready to play for the Browns in 2020.
Footballguys view: Njoku has plenty of physical talent, but he was disgruntled with the Browns and wanted to move on. He met with team officials and now says that he's 'all in' via social networking. Njoku will serve as the team's no.2 tight end behind free agent addition Austin Hooper.

                              Dolphins | Ryan Fitzpatrick: I'm a placeholder
Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick says he fully realizes his time as the team's starter is limited with first-round draft pick Tua Tagovailoa getting a green light for workouts. 'I don't know how much time it will be before Tua will be in the lineup. I know that I am the placeholder,' Fitzpatrick said in a recent interview with ESPN. 'We've already had that conversation. I've told him, 'I'm going to do the best I can to lead this team and win football games when I'm out there.' Whenever it is that Tua gets his chance whether it's early or late or whenever, I'm going to be his biggest cheerleader.'
Footballguys view: Fitzpatrick knows what's up. The veteran is there to steer the ship until rookie first-round QB Tua Tagovailoa is ready. The Dolphins are going to have a competition for the starting job in training camp and Tagovailoa has already been cleared for full participation. We could see the rookie win the job in camp and begin the regular season as the starter.
