Ramos to catch Syndergaard despite concerns

Wilson Ramos will indeed be behind the plate when Noah Syndergaard and the Mets take on Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight in New York.

It will be Syndergaard's first start since the New York Post reported Monday that he and his agents have lobbied to let the right-hander pitch to backup catchers Tomas Nido or Rene Rivera instead.

Syndergaard later said the Post was wrong in saying he was "livid" in a meeting he had with Mets manager Mickey Callaway and general manager Brodie Van Wagenen to talk about the catching situation.

Syndergaard has a 5.09 ERA in 18 games throwing to Ramos and a 2.45 ERA in 10 games with Nido. The right-hander is 10-7 with a career-high 4.06 ERA overall in 28 starts this season.

Callaway had said Wednesday that Ramos was likely to catch Syndergaard on Friday night.

Also, the Mets are sitting NL home run leader Pete Alonso tonight for a routine off day.

Rays lefty and reigning American League Cy Young winner Blake Snell is scheduled to return to action next week, he tells reporters including Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times (Twitter links). Snell will take the ball on Tuesday with the expectation of throwing about three innings.
Snell last appeared in late July, at which time he was sidelined with loose bodies in his pitching elbow. He has been working back since undergoing surgery to alleviate the issue. The absence has been a bit longer than initially anticipated.
It’s great news for the Rays, who’ll allow Snell to get his competitive rehab work in at the MLB level. There aren’t any more Triple-A games for Snell to appear in. And the Rays’ adaptable pitching staff is accustomed to covering for short starts and bulk appearances.
Snell will join righty Tyler Glasnow in returning with partial availability. Unlike Glasnow, who had been firmly on the rise when he hit the shelf, Snell had taken a step back early in the season. Through 101 innings over his twenty starts to this point, Snell carries a 4.28 ERA.
That said, the Tampa Bay organization has every reason to believe that Snell can get back to being the monster he was in 2018. He had been much the same pitcher by most measures — if not better. He maintained a 3.1 BB/9 walk rate while raising his strikeout game (12.1 K/9, 17.8% swinging-strike rate) and lowering his xwOBA (.263).
There isn’t much time left for Snell to build up his pitch count. He’ll be able to make three total outings before the end of the regular season, so it’s reasonable to presume he’ll still be climbing northward come crunch time. But he’d likely be nearing full availability. And if he goes every fifth day, Snell will be on turn to start the Wild Card game.

The Cubs sure didn't miss Baez Friday putting up 17 runs like that but man the Brewers have won 8 of their last 10 games so maybe they'll be ok...

Angels' Upton done for '19 with patellar tendinitis

Los Angeles Angels outfielder Justin Upton was ruled out for the rest of the season with patellar tendinitis, the team announced after Friday night's 11-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.
Upton, who had an MRI earlier this week after complaining of right knee discomfort and missed his second straight game Friday, will receive a platelet-rich plasma injection and will need six weeks of recovery. He is expected to be ready for spring training in 2020.
It was an injury-plagued season for Upton, who went on the injured list in late March because of turf toe on his left foot and missed the Angels' first 71 games. Limited to 63 games, he finished with just 12 homers and 40 RBIs, his lowest totals since his 43-game rookie season in 2007.
The Angels have lost five straight while playing without Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani.

Braves clinch, but focus on Culberson after HBP

WASHINGTON -- The Atlanta Braves celebrated another playoff berth with heavy hearts.

Ronald Acuna Jr. ignited the decisive four-run rally with the go-ahead, two-run double in the seventh inning, as the National League East-leading Braves wrapped up a postseason berth with a 10-1 victory over the Washington Nationals on Saturday. The victory also eliminated the Philadelphia Phillies from winning the NL East.

But there was no celebrating in the postgame clubhouse, as the team remained concerned about utility man Charlie Culberson, who was struck directly on the right cheekbone by a 91 mph fastball in the seventh on the first pitch by Nationals reliever Fernando Rodney.

The Braves believe that Culberson has a fracture in his right cheekbone but avoided a concussion or an eye injury, sources told ESPN's Buster Olney.

"He was good when he went to the hospital. I mean, he was alert and all of that stuff,'' Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said of Culberson, who was pinch-hitting for starting pitcher Mike Foltynewicz with two on and no out in the seventh inning of a 1-1 game.

"We just don't [know] any of the extent of what's going on yet. We are just praying for him and his family. That's scary.''

Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo left Sunday’s matchup with the Pirates in the third inning after he rolled his ankle attempting to field a bunt. He underwent preliminary X-rays after the game, which revealed that he avoided a fracture, but suffered a sprained ankle, per The Athletic’s Sahadev Sharma. He’s ticketed for an MRI on Monday, which will determine with greater precision the severity of the injury.

Jesus Luzardo’s second Major League appearance resulted in his first career save, as the star Athletics rookie allowed a run on two hits and two walks over three innings of work in Oakland’s 6-1 win over the Rangers today. Luzardo has tossed three innings in each of his two MLB games, both times coming directly after a starter (Brett Anderson on Wednesday after five innings, and Sean Manaea after six innings today). Should the A’s reach the postseason, there’s certainly a case that Luzardo could serve as either a multi-inning reliever or even as a proper starter. “That gives us a little pause for thought about how we potentially might do things down the road,” A’s manager Bob Melvin told reporters, including the San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser. “Obviously, we have to get there, a lot of work between then and now. But you definitely think of some options, especially with Luzardo coming out of the pen doing what he’s doing.”

                                                Way to go Jesus

Trout to have surgery for nerve issue in foot

Mike Trout had been trying to get back in the lineup, but that plan is over because the Los Angeles Angels slugger will have foot surgery that will end his season.
The team announced Sunday that Trout will have a thickening of tissue around the nerves in the ball of his right foot -- a condition called Morton's neuroma -- removed later this week.
"I kind of knew when I first got my MRI a few weeks ago that I would probably need surgery at the end of the year to get it removed," Trout said Sunday. "Just got worse. We tried everything. The training staff has been awesome. Some days it would feel good. Some days, once the thing cleared up, it was tough to walk."
Trout was scheduled to fly with the team to New York on Sunday evening for a series with the Yankees that starts Tuesday. He is to return to Los Angeles on Thursday and have surgery later in the week.

Of course guys have made the HOF without being on teams that won titles but I think having rings associated with you enhances your legacy.
