NFL Player News - Week of 2/5
PHI - QB Nick Foles named Super Bowl MVP

Source: The Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles was named the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl LII, completing 28 of his 43 passes for 373 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in a 41-33 win over the New England Patriots. He also caught a one-yard touchdown pass.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

An amazing performance in an amazing game. Foles was incredible and played with poise and calm and aggressiveness. A fantastic ending to the season. Congrats to Foles and to the Eagles.

PHI - QB Nick Foles may be trade target

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

The Philadelphia Eagles are expecting to receive trade interest on QB Nick Foles this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If they can get a starter price for him, they should listen, but Carson Wentz is no lock for Week 1 and they'll want to bring him back at a very deliberate pace.

ARI - WR Larry Fitzgerald to make decision soon

Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald said he expects to decide on his playing future in the next week or two.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A report earlier this week said new offensive coordinator Mike McCoy made it sound like Fitzgerald will play in 2018. We'll see very soon. If Fitzgerald retires, the Cardinals will have to start over at wide receiver, with John and Jaron Brown also free agents this year.

IND - Indy could make offer to WR Donte Moncrief

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Wells

The Indianapolis Colts could consider offering impending free-agent WR Donte Moncrief a short-term deal where he would have to prove his value, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Mike Wells.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Moncrief is still young at 24 and he has great tools, but has been a disappointment with the Colts. The team might value him more than others because of continuity, considering how little they have on the depth chart behind Moncrief.

DET - WR Marvin Jones thinks DET can have top offense

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions WR Marvin Jones said he believes the Lions have the chance to be the top offense in the NFL next season with QB Matthew Stafford and all of the main receivers under contract.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Lions offense needs to develop a running game before that can happen. Jones did have an excellent 2017 and showed he belongs among the ranks of #1 NFL wide receivers.

NYG - Odell Beckham hopes to get extension

Source: New York Post - Anthony Barstow

New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. said he hopes to receive a contract extension this offseason so he does not have to worry about the situation. 'Hopefully we get it done, just to get it over with,' Beckham said. 'I really want to do it so I can move past it. It's too much to be sitting around, thinking where I'm going to be.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Giants should commit to Beckham and build an offensive blueprint around his influence on the game. Sterling Shepard and Evan Engram give them players to exploit the space and mismatches Beckham will leave in his wake, and they can draft their quarterback of the future at #2.

DEN - Denver had interest in WR Wes Welker

    Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis

The Denver Broncos requested permission to interview Houston Texans assistant coach Wes Welker for their wide receivers coaching position, but the Texans denied the request. The Broncos hired Zach Azzanni as their receivers coach.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Azzanni's claim to fame is that he was Antonio Brown's wide receiver coach at Central Michigan. Welker appears to be yet another acorn from the Belichick tree that is beginning to grow.

NFL - John Fox receiving coaching offers

Source: WGN Radio 720 - Adam Hoge

Former Chicago Bears head coach John Fox is reportedly mulling over several assistant coaching offers, as well as an opportunity to join the media, according to FOX Sports NFL insider Jay Glazer.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fox is a good defensive coach, and the defense wasn't really the problem in Chicago. He could be an excellent addition to any defensive staff.

SF - SF nearing deal with QB Jimmy Garoppolo

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

The San Francisco 49ers appear to be close to finalizing a long-term contract extension with QB Jimmy Garoppolo, according to multiple sources informed of the situation.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Garoppolo should become one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the game, but because of timing, not track record. Still, the marriage between him and Kyle Shanahan should be a happy and productive one. He might go higher than he should in drafts on the momentum and recognition he generated in December.

PHI - QB Carson Wentz to resume exercising

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz (knee) will begin doing weight-bearing exercises Wednesday, Feb. 7, with the brace on his knee being unlocked for the first time since he was placed on injured reserve. Barring any setbacks, Wentz could be able to do some work in training camp and the possibility remains that he could be ready for the start of the 2018 regular season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That means it's far from guaranteed that he'll be ready. Wentz is the franchise quarterback and the team will have Nick Foles on the roster, so they will be conservative. Wentz might miss some games early in the 2018 season and will be a risky pick if you have to take him early in drafts.

WAS - WAS could place franchise tag on QB Kirk Cousins

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

The Washington Redskins are considering placing the franchise tag on QB Kirk Cousins in order to trade him and recover some of the compensation they sent to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for QB Alex Smith, according to multiple sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This could be tough as it will keep Washington from having cap flexibility while Cousins is on the books, and other teams might not play ball knowing that Washington can't keep Cousins. This is a risky move that could backfire by keeping Washington from being players in free agency and getting little for that trouble.

NFL - Josh Allen boom or bust?

    Source: NFL.com - Daniel Jeremiah

Wyoming QB Josh Allen has no 'middle ground' in his evaluations, according to an NFL executive. 'We've got enormously high grades and really low grades for him,' the executive said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He's a set of rare traits and abilities without the consistency to get the most out of the tools at this point. All quarterbacks have a big leap to the NFL, and the hope is that he can iron out the wrinkles while keeping the big play mentality intact. He'll be a first-round pick in any event.

GB - QB Aaron Rodgers realistic about future

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Michael David Smith

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers said he believes he has many good years left in him, but he acknowledged that he could finish his career with a different team. 'I think you have to be humble enough to realize if it could happen to Brett (Favre), it can happen to you,' Rodgers said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It won't happen any time soon after Brett Hundley showed himself to be a limited quarterback, or at least limited in Green Bay's conception of what he can and can't do. They appeared to keep him on the conservative side, but it still wasn't a good showing. With Hundley entering free agency next year, they need to know what they have in Joe Callahan.

NO - Baker Mayfield would love to be a Saint

    Source: DraftWire - Luke Easterling

Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield said the New Orleans Saints would be a great landing spot for him in the 2018 NFL Draft because he could learn under QB Drew Brees and play in head coach Sean Payton's offense.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Saints have also made the most of having a short quarterback and even have a short backup in Chase Daniel. The offensive line is used to blocking for a passer that needs more clear throwing lanes and the fit makes sense.

      Tuesday Update

PHI - QB Carson Wentz throwing

      Source: PhillyVoice.com - Jimmy Kempski

Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz (knee) was throwing 50-yard passes in warmups at the Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 4.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wentz's arm is not the problem, his knee is and there was more damage to the knee than originally thought. He had surgery to repair his knee in mid-December and reports have come out how Wentz suffered both ACL and LCL damage. His status for the start of the regular season is up in the air.

CLE - Cleveland high on Baker Mayfield?

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield is high on Cleveland Browns consultant Scot McCloughan's draft board. McCloughan has already endorsed Mayfield as his top quarterback in this year's draft class, describing the polarizing signal-caller as a 'shorter Brett Favre.'

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Browns have the no1 and no4 pick in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft. They will secure two of the best players in this draft if they keep those picks. While Mayfield may be seen as a mid- or late-first round pick, the Browns may want to scoop him up in the top five. With teams like the Broncos (no5) and the Jets (no6) behind them, the Browns may want to just secure Mayfield's services and start grooming him as the quarterback of the future.

HOU - QB Deshaun Watson running again

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson (knee) ran Monday, Feb. 5, for the first time since suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament last season.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Exciting news for the Texans here. Watson is ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation and hopes to participate in organized team activities this offseason. He's got QB1 written all over him for fantasy owners due to his skill as a passer, the weapons around him and his running ability.

DET - Matt Patricia named Detroit head coach

      Source: FOX Sports

The Detroit Lions hired former New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia as head coach Monday, Feb. 5, according to FS1's Kristine Leahy during The Herd with Colin Cowherd.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This move was expected for quite some time now. A defensive minded coach, Patricia takes over a team with talent on both sides of the ball. We'll see if he can bring some of that New England flavor to the Motor City. Several former Patriots assistants have failed as head coaches across the league, and Patricia is coming off a Super Bowl where his defense couldn't stop a Nick Foles led Eagles team.

IND - Josh McDaniels still likely to Colts

Source: Terre Haute Tribune-Star - Tom James
New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is still likely to take the Indianapolis Colts' head coaching job, according to sources, NBC Sports Boston's Tom Curran said on the Dan Patrick Show Monday, Feb. 5. Curran said it could be announced Wednesday, Feb. 7.
      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Reports surfaced on Sunday that McDaniels was getting cold feet about this Colts move. That opened up speculation about the future of Bill Belichick with the Patriots. Nothing is done until there's a press conference and the ink is dry on the contract, but we should see McDaniels introduced as the head coach of the Colts sometime this week.

            Wednesday Update

Colts | Concern Andrew Luck may need more surgery?
Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) may not out of the woods yet regarding his right shoulder, as ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported 'there still are doctors who have concerns about Luck's shoulder and whether he could wind up needing additional surgery.'

Footballguys view: There have been rumors about this for some time. Luck has been in Europe recovering from his shoulder problem, and when Josh McDaniels backed out of the head coaching gig more rumors about Luck's shoulder problem began to surface.
Patriots | New England keeping Josh McDaniels as OC
Updating a previous report, New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has decided to remain with the team in his current post rather than accept the head coaching job with the Indianapolis Colts.

Footballguys view: Things change quickly around here. The Colts website and social networking pages had already declared McDaniels as their new head coach earlier on Tuesday. Now, the Patriots keep McDaniels...likely to take over for Bill Belichick in the near future. Belichick is likely to coach the Patriots in 2018, but his future beyond that is in question.
NFL | Influx of ACL tears in 2017
Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson (knee) and Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz (knee) were two of the most notable NFL players to suffer torn anterior cruciate ligaments last season. In total, 63 players suffered such injuries, the most since 2013.

Footballguys view: It's an interesting stat no doubt. Plus, it highlights the need for depth at multiple positions. As stars and starters get hurt, those teams that want to advance (see Eagles) need to have quality players as reserves.
Steelers | Pittsburgh combo already has chemistry
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger and WR JuJu Smith-Schuster teamed up for the best quarterback-receiver combination in the NFL in 2017 with a 134.8 passer rating.
Footballguys view: They've got chemistry that should only get stronger as they continue to play together. Smith-Schuster was a dynamic rookie who finished as the no17 WR in standard scoring leagues. He's a top-20 fantasy WR going forward with his role and a Steelers offense that should continue to fill the air with footballs even though OC Todd Haley was fired and replaced by former QBs coach Randy Fichtner.

                Thursday Update

Cardinals | David Johnson cleared for activities
Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson (wrist) has been fully cleared to resume all football-related activities.

Bears | Zach Miller hopes to play football again
Chicago Bears TE Zach Miller (knee) said that he still hopes to play football again. He's had nine surgeries related to the knee injury he suffered on Sunday, Oct. 29, against the New Orleans Saints, and while he's 'out of the woods' concerning the previous possibility of losing his leg, he's still waiting on his knee to heal enough to start rehabilitation. There is still no timeline for when that will happen.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer placed on Retired list
Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer was placed on the Reserve/Retired list Monday, Feb. 5.

Vikings | MIN, John DeFilippo to talk Thursday
Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo is scheduled to interview for the Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator position Thursday, Feb. 8, according to sources.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas not expected back
Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas is expected to be released this offseason.

Steelers | Extension for Ben Roethlisberger?
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger's current contract could be extended at some point, according to owner Art Rooney. Roethlisberger, who is 35 years old, has already expressed his desire to play three more years in the NFL. Rooney did add that the sides have not had a long conversation about a potential extension yet, however.

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger is set to be a free agent in 2020 on his current deal. We could see the two sides come to a new agreement to extend Roethlisberger some time before the start of the regular season.

Redskins | Chris Thompson thinks he'll return to form
Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson (leg) is confident he'll be able to return to his former self once he's fully healed from his broken leg. 'So it's just more of me being patient with it, with the rehab, and just kind of being smart,' he said in a radio interview. 'I'm known to want to progress as fast as I can, so I think if I just stay patient with the process and everything I should be back to what I was before.'

Browns | Duke Johnson captured team record in '17
Cleveland Browns RB Duke Johnson finished with 74 catches for 693 yards, setting a new franchise record for receptions in one season by a running back. In addition, he logged 82 carries for 348 yards (4.2 per rush) on the ground. Overall, he had seven total touchdowns -- four rushing and three receiving.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski's retirement thoughts 'real'
New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski's thoughts about retirement ever since the club's loss in Super Bowl 52 on Sunday, Feb. 4, against the Philadelphia Eagles are 'real,' according to Albert Breer of SI.com. Gronkowski has been responsible with his finances, putting away most of his football money and living largely off his endorsement cash, and he's taken an 'absolute beating' physically.

Vikings | John DeFilippo to be Vikings OC
The Minnesota Vikings are hiring Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo as their new offensive coordinator, according to a source.

Seahawks | Doug Baldwin in line for guaranteed money
Seattle Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin will have $4.5 million of his $8.25 million base salary for 2018 guaranteed if he is on the roster Friday, Feb. 8.
Footballguys view: Baldwin missed the 1,000 yard mark for the first time since 2014, and not by much. While the Seahawks might try to renegotiate ahead of the deadline, he's still going to get paid. And Seattle needs him.
Seahawks | Russell Wilson in line for guaranteed money
Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson will have $4.9 million of his $15.5 million base salary for 2018 guaranteed if he is on the roster Friday, Feb. 8.
Footballguys view: Wilson has certainly earned it over the last few years behind his turnstile offensive line and this year didn't even ave a run game to take pressure off. We expect him to get his money, and expect him to be one of the top fantasy quarterbacks again in 2018.
Patriots | Josh McDaniels to receive long-term deal
New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is expected to sign a four- or five-year contract extension with the Patriots.
Footballguys view: There's no way McDaniels stayed in New England without a virtual guarantee of replacing Bill Belichick when Belichick retires in the near future. If he wasn't given that assurance, he is in some trouble, as his name is currently mud around the NFL.
Colts | Indy to talk with Leslie Frazier Saturday

Los Angeles Rams PK Greg Zuerlein (back) should be ready for the start of the 2018 season, according to head coach Sean McVay.

Eagles | Donnel Pumphrey ready to roll
Philadelphia Eagles RB Donnel Pumphrey (hamstring) said he is '100 percent healed up' and ready for the 2018 season. 'You're going to see the versatile Donnel Pumphrey I once was and a stronger and faster back that can also do it on special teams,' he said.

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (knee) said he has progressed to the point where he can sprint on the treadmill. 'So things are looking bright for next year,' Conner said.

Bears | Dion Sims to be cut?
Chicago Bears TE Dion Sims is 'likely' to be released before $4 million of his contract becomes guaranteed on March 16, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

Bills | Buffalo eyeing a QB in draft?
Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane has yet to endorse QB Tyrod Taylor as the long-term answer at quarterback, and Mike Rodak of ESPN.com believes the Bills could bundle some of their draft picks to move up and select a quarterback early in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Raiders | Marshawn Lynch has met with new coach
Oakland Raiders RB Marshawn Lynch has met with head coach Jon Gruden on several occasions since the team hired Gruden, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Lynch is in the final year of his contract in 2018. He was solid in a comeback season with the Raiders in 2017, but there were concerns about his return when Gruden got the job as the new head coach in Oakland. It looks like Lynch is good to go with Gruden, and he's at least a RB2/flex option for fantasy owners as the Raiders lead back in 2018.
Buccaneers | TB likely to pick up Jameis Winston's option
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers likely will pick up QB Jameis Winston's fifth-year option this offseason, in the opinion of Buccaneers.com's Scott Smith.
Footballguys view: Why would they not pick up his option? The Buccaneers have one of the few franchise QBs in the league, and they'll get a bit more time to work out a new long-term contract with Winston. He struggled through a shoulder injury in 2017 and that impacted his stats negatively. If healthy, Winston should be in for a bounce-back season in 2018.
Vikings | John DeFilippo to call plays
Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator John DeFilippo will call the offensive plays next season.

Browns | Cleveland wants to meet with Baker Mayfield
The Cleveland Browns have requested a private visit with Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield leading up to the 2018 NFL Draft, according to sources.
Footballguys view: The Browns could end up selecting Mayfield with the no1 or no4 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft. He was impressive at the Senior Bowl earlier this year and is the favorite QB of Browns draft consultant (and former Washington GM) Scot McCloughan.
Patriots | Julian Edelman should be ready for camp
New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (knee) is expected to be ready for the start of training camp.
Footballguys view: Edelman had surgery to repair his knee back in September of 2017. That gives him nearly a full calendar year before the start of the 2018 regular season. Edelman should be eased back into action when training camp start in August.
Patriots | Martellus Bennett due roster bonus
New England Patriots TE Martellus Bennett is scheduled to receive a $2 million roster bonus March 14. The team would save $6.2 million in salary cap space if they release Bennett.
Footballguys view: Bennett has discussed retirement, so there's no guarantee that he'll even want to play in 2018. The Patriots could always ask him to take a pay cut if they want him on the team this season.
Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald nearing contract deadline
Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald's $11 million base salary for 2018 will be guaranteed if he is remains on the roster Friday, Feb. 9.
Footballguys view: Fitzgerald still has not decided if he will play next season or retire. He has previously stated that he would make his decision after the new coaching staff was put in place. Former Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks was named their new head coach in late January, so Fitzgerald has been mulling his decision based on the new staff for a week or so. We think he's leaning towards a return. No matter his decision, Fitzgerald is locked into a spot in the Hall of Fame when his playing days are done.
