MIA - Miami signs QB Jay Cutler to fill QB void

    Source: NFL.com - Ian Rapoport

Free-agent QB Jay Cutler (Bears) has reportedly agreed to terms with the Miami Dolphins on an undisclosed contract Sunday, Aug. 6.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This should be an interesting fit, as Cutler is well acquainted with Adam Gase's scheme and had one of his best seasons in it. With the weapons he has in Miami and a much better offensive line than he ever had in Chicago, he could be very productive. In fact, he could look better in this offense than Ryan Tannehill did, and he's definitely an upgrade over Matt Moore. It's going to take a little time to get up to speed, but Cutler could be a big help in getting the Dolphins back to the playoffs.

BAL - No timetable for QB Joe Flacco

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley
Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco (back) is feeling better every day but there is still no timetable for his return, according to head coach John Harbaugh.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We probably won't see him in preseason, but Flacco should be around in Week 1. This might be a convenient way for the Ravens to save face after reports surfaced of tension between ownership and the coaches/front office regarding Colin Kaepernick. If Flacco is fine by Week 1, they can say they don't need another quarterback and can get through the preseason with Ryan Mallett, Dustin Vaughan and David Olson. Flacco's ADP has dropped to 159 overall and he is the No. 23 quarterback coming off the board. He's dropped nine spots as of August 1, though all quarterbacks have slipped a little anyway. Still, he may end up a value if you grab him at that price and his back holds up.

KC - TE Travis Kelce remains sidelined

    Source: Chiefs.com - B.J. Kissel

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce (knee) did not participate in practice Sunday, Aug. 6.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We aren't worried yet but the fact that he has been dealing with knee swelling since camp opened, though it's a condition he's dealt with on and off since he was a rookie and had microfracture surgery. Given that history, and since he still managed back to back 800-plus yard seasons in 2014 and 2015, then topped 1100 yards in 2016, we think he'll get through this. The only thing we'd like more of is touchdowns, as he has averaged just five a season since entering the league. He's still worth his 32 ADP as the second tight end off the board in drafts.

NYJ - Neck issue for WR Quincy Enunwa

    Source: SNY - Ralph Vacchiano
Updating a previous report, New York Jets WR Quincy Enunwa (neck) is dealing with the same type of neck injury that bothered him during the spring, head coach Todd Bowles said Saturday, Aug. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll be watching this one for you. It doesn't appear overly serious, but all neck injuries are worrisome. The Jets are already a mess at receiver and they don't need the only guy sniffing 1000 yards on their roster last year to get hurt. Nobody at the wide receiver position is worth much this year and you can pretty much ignore Jets at the position in drafts.

IND - WR Donte Moncrief may return Tuesday

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Wells

Indianapolis Colts WR Donte Moncrief (shoulder) has a very good chance of participating in practice Tuesday, Aug. 8, according to head coach Chuck Pagano.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Moncrief needs to get on the field. He missed a lot of games last season with a shoulder, so this isn't a great start to the season. If he can get off the trainers table and on to the field, Moncrief should find some success across from T.Y. Hilton, and given his touchdown production last season (7) in limited games (9) we're excited for that to happen. Currently he is going as the No. 33 receiver in drafts, with an overall ADP of 80.

BUF - WR Sammy Watkins leaves practice early

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (ankle) left practice early Sunday, Aug. 6, after he suffered an ankle injury. Watkins said he believes he will be able to return to practice Monday, Aug. 7.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If you think you're stuck in a time loop because this reminds you so much of every other season Watkins has played in the NFL, you aren't alone. Watkins is always banged up so even if this isn't a big deal, it's a reminder that he isn't safe. His ADP is at 35 right now, and he's been the No. 16 receiver off the board. As a third round pick, he's a decent value especially when you remember he was a top seven receiver in PPR leagues the second half of last year. Of course, you had to basically survive without him until Week 12 and when he returned three out of his last six games were duds. While you hope for more games like the Week 16 154 and one touchdown game against Miami, you have to expect a few games like the Week 15 stinker against Cleveland.

MIA - QB Ryan Tannehill has partially torn ACL

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero
Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill (knee) has a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, but it is not known if he will undergo surgery. Tannehill suffered a similar injury last season and decided not to undergo surgery.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With the signing of Cutler, we were pretty sure it was this bad. Before camp, medical checks indicated the left knee was very strong even after the tear but we suppose that was more wishful thinking than anything else. It will be a shock if he doesn't have surgery this time and even if he does, this will cast a shadow over his future as a starter in Miami or anywhere else.

PHI - WR Alshon Jeffery back at practice

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer - Zach Berman
Philadelphia Eagles WR Alshon Jeffery (shoulder) returned to practice Sunday, Aug. 6, after missing the previous four practices due to a shoulder strain.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Eagles may hold him out of the preseason game on Thursday, but even if that's the case, we see his presence at practice as a comforting sign. As long as he sees some action in the next few preseason games, he should be fine and really, as long as he and Carson Wentz regularly work on the practice field, they should be able to be in sync. Jeffery is going as the No. 15 receiver off the board right now, and we know he is capable of outplaying that ADP. If he is healthy and Wentz takes the next step forward, Jeffery will put up even better numbers.

SEA - Bigger role for TE Jimmy Graham?

Source: The Tacoma News Tribune - Gregg Bell
Seattle Seahawks TE Jimmy Graham needs to see more opportunities in the red zone, offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said Saturday, Aug. 5.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
He took a big leap back to what he used to be in New Orleans with a 923 yard season in 2016, but his touchdown totals remained a bit low. So we want to see him get more chances in the red zone, and think that will translate to the end zone and scores. He's almost a bargain as he comes off the board as the 5th tight end in drafts, and if he can come close to double digit touchdowns this year, he will be a steal even at that high ADP.

MIA - WR Kenny Stills has hamstring issue

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins WR Kenny Stills (hamstring) is dealing with a tight hamstring, head coach Adam Gase said Saturday, Aug. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Because apparently the Dolphins don't have enough going on. Stills should be fine, but this might drag down his ADP even more. People were already looking past him to DeVante Parker, and he's been around the 65th receiver off the board so far in drafts. That makes him a decent bargain if you are looking for a receiver you can plug in off and on, but who also can score some points when you do.

SF - QB Brian Hoyer impressive in camp

Source: Sacramento Bee - Matt Barrows

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer has looked 'very sharp' in training camp so far, according to the Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Hoyer is relatively capable of not being awful, which is definitely faint praise. Considering how much of a mess everyone expects the Niners to be offensively this season, all he has to do is not be a dumpster fire under center and we'll all label his time a success. That being said, he's an absolute 'avoid' in all fantasy formats even if Matt Barkley or CJ Beathard never steal the job mid-season.

DET - TE Eric Ebron still out

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions TE Eric Ebron (hamstring) did not participate in practice Sunday, Aug. 6.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

More than likely a rest day for a veteran the team needs to have healthy and rested for the season. They'll be gentle with that hamstring, and we'll probably see more of him in the latter stages of camp. Ebron is tracking as a solid TE2 in drafts, going as the No. 13 tight end off the boards.

DET - RB Ameer Abdullah receives day off

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah did not participate in practice Sunday, Aug. 6, but said it was a maintenance day. He expects to play in the first preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This whole situation stinks of committee, and with Theo Riddick getting passing downs and Zach Zenner getting goal line reps, Abdullah's production is going to be hard to pin down consistently. He's going as the No. 27 back off the board and 66 overall in ADP, but we wouldn't be shocked if it dropped a little from there even as cloudy as this situation is.

WAS - WR Josh Doctson leaves practice early

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson (hamstring) left practice early Sunday, Aug. 6, and is being evaluated for a hamstring injury.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
After a long, banged up rookie season, Doctson had been doing really well, so this is disappointing. Hopefully this isn't anything serious, but between this injury and Jamison Crowder's lingering hamstring, Washington's receiver corps is off to a banged up start.

NYG - TE Evan Engram listed as backup

    Source: ESPN.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants TE Evan Engram is listed as the second-team tight end on the team's first depth chart. TE Rhett Ellison is listed as the starter at tight end.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This tells you a few things, chief of which is that the Giants are worried about blocking at the tackles. Ellison is primarily a blocker, though he can catch the ball on occasion. While Engram is likely to still be adjusting to the playbook, routes and general day to day action of the Giants, he's probably a better receiver for the most part than Ellison. But when you have Ereck Flowers and Bobby Hart on the edge of your offensive line, blocking means more and Ellison is better than Engram in that arena, hands down. Of course, as many Footballguys staff who have covered training camp can tell you, the first depth chart is of questionable value. So this is definitely not anything to panic about if you own Engram in dynasty. We'll watch camp closely because the key to the skill players producing is all about that offensive line and pass protection.

DET - RB Dwayne Washington returning kicks

    Source: MLive.com - Kyle Meinke
Detroit Lions RB Dwayne Washington served as the kick returner in the team's mock game Saturday, Aug. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's one way the team can afford to keep him on the roster. With Theo Riddick, Zach Zenner and Ameer Abdullah all looking like they have carved out roles, Washington would likely otherwise be cut.

DET - WR Marvin Jones shines in red zone

    Source: MLive.com - Kyle Meinke
Detroit Lions WR Marvin Jones has emerged as one of the QB Matthew Stafford's favorite targets in the red zone, according to Kyle Meinke of MLive.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
That's great but he still only had four touchdowns. So sure, he's getting targets but he's not finding the end zone. Jones is pretty much just a solid depth wide receiver and is currently tracking as the No. 51 receiver off the board in drafts.

NYJ - WR Quincy Enunwa has bulging disk

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

Updating a previous report, New York Jets WR Quincy Enunwa (neck) is out six to nine months with a bulging disk in his neck, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This isn't great news for his future as a pro. Enunwa was in a contract year this season and now he's going to be a free agent in 2018 with major question marks.

BUF - WR Anquan Boldin headed to Bills

                Source: FOXSports.com - Peter Schrager

Free-agent WR Anquan Boldin (Lions) will agree to a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills Monday, Aug. 7.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Zay Jones and Charles Clay's redraft appeal as late-round picks goes down with this news, but Boldin won't have as much value as he had in Detroit last year. Tyrod Taylor and the offense gets a small bump, but with Taylor having lackluster practices in the transition to Rick Dennison's offense, it's probably not an optimistic outlook for their pass offense. Overall this isn't that significant for fantasy, but it helps the Bills who sorely needed more experience at wide receiver.

DEN - QB Trevor Siemian to start preseason opener

Source: NFL Network - James Palmer

Denver Broncos QB Trevor Siemian will start the preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 10.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here as Siemian has been the better player in training camp for most days. Head coach Vance Joseph still says this is an open competition and Paxton Lynch will start preseason game no2 against the 49ers the following week. If Lynch doesn't start playing better, it will be Siemian under center when the Broncos take on the Chargers in Week 1 of the regular season.

MIA - WR Jarvis Landry under investigation

                Source: ESPN.com

Miami Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry is being investigated for possible battery, head coach Adam Gase confirmed Monday, Aug. 7.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This incident was from earlier this offseason. Perhaps it played into the team's decision to not extend Landry before camp although there are reports it did not. Landry was already overvalued as his ADP didn't reflect his less central role in the pass offense, so this is just another reason to avoid him, although the league can move slow when it comes to discipline decisions. On a better note, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported a statement from Landry's girlfriend, Estrella Cerqueira regarding the incident that appeared positive.

CAR - QB Cam Newton does some light throwing

Source: Charlotte Observer - Joseph Person

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) did some light throwing with the trainers Sunday, Aug. 6. Head coach Ron Rivera said the trainers told him that Newton did not report any problems after the throwing session.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a step in the right direction and hopefully a sign that Newton's pause in his recovery is almost over. It is still a situation that merits close monitoring throughout the month.

MIN - RB Dalvin Cook listed as starter

                Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Minnesota Vikings rookie RB Dalvin Cook is listed as the starting running back on the Vikings' initial depth chart.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
That's what we are expecting to start the regular season. Latavius Murray is not healthy enough to compete for the starting job right now and Cook brings an excellent skill set. So long as he stays healthy and hangs onto the rock, Cook as RB1 upside but a price tag of a low-end RB2. The rookie from Florida State has a current ADP of RB19 (4.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

MIA - WR Kenny Stills limited

                Source: Sun-Sentinel - Chris Perkins

Miami Dolphins WR Kenny Stills (hamstring) did not participate in team drills Monday, Aug. 7.
                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Stills is a speed guy, so hamstring injuries can definitely linger if not given proper time to heal. He had a career-high 9 touchdown grabs last year but that number should be difficult to duplicate in 2017. We like projecting Stills for around 40 catches, 600 yards and 5 touchdowns.

SEA - TE Jimmy Graham fees much better

                Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks TE Jimmy Graham (knee) said he feels almost 100 times better than he did at his point last year. Graham was rehabilitating from a ruptured patellar tendon twice a day to be prepared for games. Additionally, he is down to 260 pounds from around 280 pounds last season.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Seahawks figured out how to best use Graham last year and he snared 65 passes for 923 yards and six touchdowns - marks that made him the no2 fantasy TE in 2016. With better health, we should see a more productive Graham and a slam-dunk TE1 for fantasy owners once again this year. Graham has a current ADP of TE5 (6.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

MIA - QB Jay Cutler is fully recovered

Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero

Miami Dolphins QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) was medically cleared for his surgically repaired shoulder in March.
                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cutler is ready to go with his new team, and Dolphins coach Adam Gase should be able to get the best out of him. Expect a lot of RPO (run/pass option) for Cutler in 2017, and we could see a guy like WR DeVante Parker becoming Cutler's favorite the way WR Brandon Marshall was for him in Denver and Chicago.

NYJ - RB Matt Forte back practicing

Source: New York Post - Brian Costello

New York Jets RB Matt Forte (hamstring) returned to practice Monday, Aug. 7.
                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Jets kept Forte out of action until his hamstring injury cleared up. With the injury to Quincy Enunwa, the Jets may rely more on their pass-catchers out of the backfield like Forte. Projecting Forte at around 40 catches in 2017 is not outlandish.

DEN - QB Paxton Lynch to start second tilt

Source: The Denver Post - Nicki Jhabvala

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Broncos are keeping the door open for Lynch. His play in training camp has not earned that in the eyes of some, but his first-round draft status keeps his chances of winning the job afloat.

MIA - RB Jay Ajayi doing light work

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi (concussion) is observing practice Monday, Aug. 7, and doing light workouts.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It sounds like Ajayi is on schedule to return from this concussion in the typical range of outcomes for a head injury. As long as he gets through August without concussion symptoms once he returns, this shouldn't move Ajayi down too far on your board, but we certainly would rather it hadn't happened.

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey looked comfortable running a wildcat session during practice Sunday, Aug. 6, according to Max Henson of Panthers.com.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Any little way the Panthers can add to his value will help McCaffrey justify the high ADP he has for a rookie running back who may not lead his backfield in touches unless Jonathan Stewart gets hurt.

We'll be watching this closely to see if there are signs of an issue that may linger into the season or otherwise be a problem later this year. For now, there's no reason to move Cooper dramatically down your board, but if you were already reluctant to take him at ADP, this won't help.

ARI - WR John Brown to return soon

Source: The Arizona Republic - Bob McManaman
Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown (quadriceps) is expected to return to practice Tuesday, Aug. 8.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Now we want to see Brown stay on the practice field for the rest of the summer after an injury-riddled 2016. He's still a value if he can stay healthy and be the team's #2 all season, but his beginning to camp casts some doubt on that.

NE - QB Tom Brady, WR Brandin Cooks building chemistry

                Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady said he has been working with WR Brandin Cooks during training camp so they can work on building a better chemistry.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

An important note for fantasy owners here from one of the most trusted beat writers for any team in the league. We've seen other veteran receivers struggle when added by the Patriots (Ochocinco anyone?), but it sounds like Cooks is not going to have the same problem transitioning to the New England way. Fantasy owners should see the WR1 potential in this offense and target Cooks near the 2-3 turn in fantasy drafts.

HOU - QB Tom Savage to start first preseason game

Source: Houston Chronicle - John McClain

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage will be under center for the first snap of Houston's first preseason game. Head coach Bill O'Brien doesn't know yet how long Savage or any of the quarterbacks will play.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Savage may be in the lead right now. He's competing with 2017 first-round pick Deshaun Watson for the starting job. We could see Savage beginning the year as the starter with Watson taking over if (when?) Savage struggles.

BAL - QB Joe Flacco receives second opinion

                Source: ESPN.com - Dan Graziano

Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco (back) received a second opinion on his back last week, according to sources. The results were 'positive for a slow return.' There's no timetable for his return.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Everything the Ravens have done (or more specifically have not done) point towards them believing they'll have Flacco to open the season. That doesn't mean this injury won't affect his play or be a problem later this season. At least the second opinion didn't recommend surgery. The Ravens offense is looking less attractive by the day.

PIT - WR JuJu Smith-Schuster favored in red zone?

                Source: PennLive.com - Jacob Klinger

Pittsburgh Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster split reps with WR Eli Rogers as the slot receiver with the first-team, but Smith-Schuster was used more often in the red zone.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Steelers have quality depth at wide receiver and young depth. If Martavis Bryant gets suspended again, they should still be able to keep the passing game humming. Smith-Schuster would be the preferred pickup of he and Rogers in that case.

TEN - WR Eric Decker meshing with QB Marcus Mariota

Source: FanRag Sports - John Glennon

Tennessee Titans WR Eric Decker has already built a 'trust' with QB Marcus Mariota, according to head coach Mike Mularkey. 'Just in this week of practice, they've connected a lot of times,' Mularkey said. 'So yeah, there's a chemistry there.'

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Decker has been healthy after two offseason surgeries and he should be able to be at worst a high ceiling flex play in Tennessee's offense. He's a solid pick at ADP as probably your fourth wide receiver.

PIT - WR Martavis Bryant to practice soon?

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Gerry Dulac

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant is expected to be fully reinstated and return to practice this week, a team source said Sunday, Aug. 6.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We didn't think we would have to sweat this during the summer, but it has been a surprise story without a clear resolution on the horizon until this report. Hopefully it is true and we can get the league office out of the equation determining Bryant's value this year.

MIN - RB Latavius Murray returns from PUP list

                Source: Vikings.com - Craig Peters

Minnesota Vikings RB Latavius Murray (ankle) was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list Monday, Aug. 7.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Murray was a big free agent signing for the team this offseason, but then RB Dalvin Cook fell to the second round of the 2017 NFL draft. We expect Cook to begin the season as the starter. Murray will work his way back into shape during the rest of camp and the preseason. After that, Murray will see if he can cut into the touches for the rookie. If Cook hangs onto the rock and stays healthy, we feel he's the Vikings best running back.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Let the faux outrage begin! Cook is going to have to work his way up the depth chart, but it's something we all expect him to do. We also expect him to somewhat disappoint and fail to play up to his potential because that's what he's done nearly every year of his pro career.

JAX - WR Allen Hurns exits

Source: The Boston Globe - Ben Volin

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Hurns (undisclosed) left practice Monday, Aug. 7, with a lower-body injury. Hurns got tangled up with a defender and remained down for several minutes before limping to the locker room.
                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If Hurns has a serious injury, Marqise Lee becomes more draftable, although the #2 receiver in a run-first Blake Bortles offense isn't going to change your season. Fourth-rounder Dede Westbrook has already been generating buzz and this could open up more practice opportunities for him.

WAS - WR Josh Doctson day to day

Updating previous reports, Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson (hamstring) is day to day with his hamstring injury. He didn't practice Monday, Aug. 7.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Doctson seems to be over his achilles issues, but this isn't good news. Terrelle Pryor has been the only completely healthy top passcatcher for this team and he might be gaining momentum. Hopefully, Doctson gets back out there soon, as there's a chance for more than one Washington receiver to outperform ADP if Jordan Reed's toe is a problem this year.

Kelce had microfracture surgery early in his NFL career. This is a routine issue for him, but if it extends for weeks instead of days, it could be something that affects him to a greater degree during the season than it has in recent years.

It looks like the shoulder issue was as minor as reported. As long as it doesn't come up again this month, we can put this behind us in evaluation of Jeffery's stock.

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) remains without a timeline to begin practicing, according to head coach Chuck Pagano.

Nothing like a lack of clarity, eh? We can't see Luck playing or practicing much at all during the preseason. Luck may miss the summer but get thrust into the starting lineup for Week 1 of the regular season. He's a top-5 fantasy quarterback when healthy.

Fantasy owners are looking to see how things shake out in Cincinnati when it comes to their RB position. Hill is the starter for now, but rookie Joe Mixon has an explosive skill set and could win the job. Oh yeah, don't forget about Gio Bernard either. Right now, Hill and Bernard are going off the board back-to-back at RB52/RB53 (12.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

The rookie has to earn his spot. We imagine that by the time the regular season rolls around, Mixon will be higher in the pecking order. Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt is seeing increased work with the first-team as time goes on and could potentially work himself into the starting running back this preseason, according to ArrowheadPride.com's Pete Sweeney.

Allen has been a red zone monster in the past - when he is able to stay on the field. It's hard to see him being more prominent than Rob Gronkowski, but if Gronkowski goes down, Allen will be an insta-pickup, and you could do worse than Allen as a desperation tight end play any week you need one. Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (leg) will play in the preseason game against the New York Jets Saturday, Aug. 12.

This is a terrific sign that everything went as planned and is on schedule in Mariota's recovery from a season-ending leg injury last year.

Tennessee Titans RB DeMarco Murray (hamstring) will not play in the Titans' first preseason game this week, according to head coach Mike Mularkey.

Murray has been on the sidelines with this hamstring injury for about a week. Head coach Mike Mularkey believes that Murray is 'close' to a return, but the team is wisely going to give him the first preseason game off.

NYJ - WR Jalin Marshall listed as No. 2 WR

                            Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets WR Jalin Marshall is listed as the No. 2 wide receiver on the Jets' initial depth chart.
                            [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Marshall is suspended the first four games of the year for violating the league's PED policy. During his absence, guys like rookie ArDarius Stewart and former Clemson WR Charone Peake will compete for that no2 job opposite of Robby Anderson. No matter who wins the spot, we can't imagine the no2 WR with the Jets having a tremendous amount of fantasy value.

BUF - WR Sammy Watkins to play a quarter

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (ankle) will play about a quarter in the preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 10, according to head coach Sean McDermott.

                            [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

After Watkins' injury scare, this is great news. The team isn't going to make the mistake of taking it too slow and being surprised when Watkins' foot doesn't respond well in the season opener. That should help clarify the minds of fantasy drafters wondering whether to take Watkins in the third round.

Minnesota Vikings WR Laquon Treadwell (leg) did not participate in practice Monday, Aug. 7, and has missed five straight practices.

Treadwell is falling while Michael Floyd is rising in the wake of some excellent practices. While there was momentum building for Treadwell earlier in camp, since his fight and injury, he is fading. Floyd might be re-capturing the #3 job once his four-game suspension is over.

Denver Broncos RB C.J. Anderson will play no more than three series, while RB Jamaal Charles will not play at all in the team's preseason opener against the Chicago Bears on Thursday, Aug. 10.

                            [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Anderson will get a drive or two against the Bears on Thursday night. No matter who is the quarterback, we expect the Broncos to surprise some with how much they want to run the ball in 2017. We all know the story with Anderson...if healthy, he's got the skill set to be a top-15 fantasy back. Having never played a full 16-game season in his pro career, fantasy owners already know a backup plan must be in place if Anderson is their RB2.

Washington Redskins WR Jamison Crowder (hamstring), TE Jordan Reed (toe) and WR Josh Doctson (hamstring) will not suit up for the team's preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday, Aug. 10.

                            [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Washington's pass-catchers are quite banged up right now. There's no need to rush these guys onto the field when they're not a full strength in the preseason. If Reed is healthy, he can be a top-5 tight end. If Crowder is healthy, he could catch 100 passes in 2017 as a favorite target of Kirk Cousins. And then there's Josh Doctson....he could have 50 catches or so as a breakout candidate this year...if healthy. Washington will wisely be cautious here.

                            Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets WR ArDarius Stewart is viewed by the organization as the rookie receiver most likely to contribute in the wake of Quincy Enunwa's season-ending neck injury.

                            [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's still a stretch to see Stewart providing consistent fantasy value with the worst offense in the NFL around him. Dynasty leaguers will enjoy the long look we get at Stewart, but redraft prospects are dim for any Jet passcatcher this year.

James Conner was not listed because he is nursing a shoulder injury. If Conner can get healthy soon, he should be able to push Toussaint to be the backup to Bell, a very valuable fantasy spot.

Seattle Seahawks RB Chris Carson was listed ahead of RB Alex Collins on the second-team offense depth chart Monday, Aug. 7.

Carson has been one of the stories of camp, but Collins has also dropped weight and improved as a passcatcher. Unless the Seahawks carry five backs, look for one of Collins or Carson to be claimed after final cuts.

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant is now permitted to participate in all football activities, according to general manager Kevin Colbert.

                              [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Colbert also wrote "He will continue to be evaluated as to his readiness to participate in regular-season activities under the terms of his conditional reinstatement." So the league hasn't given the go-ahead for Bryant to play in the regular season yet. One hopes that if he can play in the preseason, he will get cleared for the regular season if he doesn't slip up. There is still risk to taking him in the fifth round, but he has the upside to perform at a 2nd/3rd level. This is a step forward, but we're not to the end yet.

SEA - RB Thomas Rawls the No. 1 running back?

Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta

Seattle Seahawks RB Thomas Rawls appears to be the clear No. 1 running back right now ahead of RB Eddie Lacy, according to Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times. Lacy worked exclusively with the second-team offense in practice Wednesday, Aug. 9.

                              [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is not reflected in current ADP, and would be a surprise after the Seahawks signed Lacy in the offseason. Perhaps it has to do with Lacy's recovery from ankle surgery, but that shouldn't be affecting him that much at this point since it happened in 2016. Rawls runs hotter than Lacy, and he might well hold onto this lead, with CJ Prosise also getting a lot of touches. Right now, Lacy should be avoided, Rawls looks like a value, and Prosise is a role player.

For now, we should assume that this is a minor issue, but if it keeps Cooper out through the third preseason game, it will be a reason to move him down on your draft board.

IND - QB Andrew Luck unlikely to open on PUP

Updating an ongoing story, Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) is unlikely to open the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, according to general manager Chris Ballard. His Week 1 availability is still to be determined. Luck has progressed in his throwing program the last two weeks rebuilding his motion and strength.

                              [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The worry about Luck's shoulder is warranted and he probably should be dropping outside of the top 6-8 quarterbacks. That being said, he can still be elite by midseason, but you'll have to draft a second quarterback will a good matchup or three to open the season. TY Hilton and Donte Moncrief aren't helped by this either.

Tennessee Titans WR Corey Davis (hamstring) believes his hamstring is healing and remains focused on being ready for the regular-season opener, but he is still week-to-week for now.

                              [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Davis probably won't play in the preseason. At this point, the team will be trying to get him healthy for the season opener against the Raiders. He was an instant starter after missing a lot of the spring, so they shouldn't be reluctant to give him a big role right away. The drop in ADP coming could make Davis a great value in drafts. He was dominant in practices before his injury.

Cleveland Browns QB Brock Osweiler will not only start the team's preseason opener against the New Orleans Saints on Thursday, Aug. 10, but ESPN's Pat McManamon believes there is 'probably a 75-percent chance' Osweiler keeps the job if he leads the offense 'sufficiently' in that contest.

                              [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is probably about the lack of upside Cody Kessler offers and the team not wanting to rush DeShone Kizer more than Osweiler blowing them away. The team could also be trying to build a trade market for him. Either way, Osweiler doesn't help the outlook of any Browns offensive player.

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman agreed to a five-year, $41.25 million contract Wednesday, Aug. 9, which makes him the highest-paid running back in the league.

Freeman won't be the highest paid back once Le'Veon Bell signs a long-term deal, but that could take years with the franchise tag rules and Bell's injury and suspension history. This shoulder injury was minor and as long as Moncrief doesn't miss time in camp or preseason again, we shouldn't count it against him. However, if it recurs this summer or during the season, it could be a sign that it will limit him for most or all of the season.

PIT - Coach talking with Le'Veon Bell

                              Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said he has been in contact with RB Le'Veon Bell during his holdout but does not have an update on when Bell will report. Bell is working out in South Florida and may report to the team in late August.

                              [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As long as Bell is in uniform for the season opener against the Browns, you shouldn't get worried about this. It is a potential reason to separate him and David Johnson for the #1 overall draft spot.

Dobbs could be the Steelers starter as early as next year if Ben Roethlisberger retires. We'll be watching his preseason performances very closely.

PHI - WR Jordan Matthews on the block?

                              Source: PhillyVoice.com - Jimmy Kempski
Philadelphia Eagles WR Jordan Matthews remains a candidate to be traded, in part due to the team's unexpected depth at receiver, according to Philly Voice's Jimmy Kempski.

                              [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Matthews certainly won't have the same weekly and season-long ceiling he has had in the past with the quality of receivers around him. If the Eagles know they won't re-sign him, a trade isn't a bad idea.

LAC - WR Mike Williams resumes running

Los Angeles Chargers WR Mike Williams (back) has resumed running on grass, according to head coach Anthony Lynn. The team still hopes Williams can return during the preseason.

                              [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams still needs at least a few weeks before he's in game shape, and will likely be brought along slowly. There is also no guaranteed that this back issue won't be a problem again during the season. He's only worth a redraft pick in very deep bench leagues right now.

MIN - RB Latavius Murray not traveling

Minnesota Vikings WR Latavius Murray (ankle) was limited during practice Tuesday, Aug. 8, and said he is not traveling with the team for their preseason game Thursday, Aug. 10. He said he is not sure if he will play in the second preseason game but knows he will be ready for the start of the regular season.
                              [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
At least he is back on the field in some fashion. Dalvin Cook is taking control of this backfield. Murray might be relegated to a short-yardage and game finisher role at this rate. He is falling well into the second half of drafts now.

CIN - RB Jeremy Hill to start all season?

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Jim Owczarski

Cincinnati Bengals RB Jeremy Hill will start all season unless he's injured or 'absolutely terrible,' in the opinion of The Cincinnati Enquirer's Jim Owczarski. Hill was listed as the starting running back on the Bengals' initial depth chart.

                                      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

His yardage total has gone up and down over the last few years, and the last two have seen sub-1,000 yard efforts on the ground, with his combined yards inching past the mark last season by 13 yards. At least his touchdown totals are hovering between nine and eleven. Current ADP is 48th running back off the board, with an overall ADP of 145. Meanwhile, rookie Joe Mixon is trending at an overall ADP of 45, and getting drafted as the 18th back off the board. It sounds like, as of now, Hill could be a huge value but it means embracing him against most rankings and early drafts and letting Mixon go, as he is way too early. The best bet, if you want to invest in the Cincinnati backfield, is likely to grab Mixon at too high a value and then grab Hill, that way you cover both sides. Understand also, that this all may shift over the next few week. So embracing that counter-narrative of Hill-not-Mixon and not having both players means you risk getting shafted if Mixon ends up in charge and you don't have him.

DAL - RB Ezekiel Elliott decision coming Friday?

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott could find out whether or not he is disciplined by the NFL as early as Friday, Aug. 11, according to a source.

                                      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We have expected some sort of suspension for Elliot for some time. That it's dragged this long has to be irking Jerry Jones, almost as much as it is irking Elliot's Fantasy GMs. Elliot is one of the top running backs in fantasy, and really that won't change regardless of suspension. But if you draft him before we find out what the suspension is, make sure you have a backup for the first few weeks just in case.

HOU - WR Braxton Miller banged up

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller (undisclosed) went to the locker room with an undisclosed injury Wednesday, Aug. 9, against the Carolina Panthers. Head coach Bill O'Brien said Miller will be fine, however.

                                      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We hope so because the Texans aren't in a position to lose too many more guys at receiver. It feels like neither Miller nor Jaelen Strong's ADP has adjusted in the wake of Will Fuller's injury, with Strong still not tracking at all and Miller tracking as the 84th wide receiver. Uncertainty at quarterback definitely has something to do with that, but it's worth watching the No. 2 for Houston to see who emerges as there could be some good value there.

Tennessee Titans RB DeMarco Murray (hamstring) is expected to return to practice Monday, Aug. 14.

                                      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Barring injury, Murray will be the lead back here. Derrick Henry will probably get a few more touches this year but not enough to impact Murray, who definitely found his mojo again in Tennessee. He's going as a top ten back in drafts right now, and we think he'll more than hit that mark in production in 2017. On the flip side, few backs have a player as good as Derrick Henry looking over their shoulder...

Frank Gore is still going to be the starter in Week 1, but we could see Mack a bit more as the season progresses, assuming the shoulder isn't a lingering issue. Currently the No 56 back off the board, with an overall ADP of 177, Mack looks like a solid handcuff on the off chance the Fantasy Reaper catches up to Gore.

Kansas City Chiefs rookie QB Patrick Mahomes has been 'impressive' in camp, 'making at least one eye-opening throw per practice and has been fun to watch,' according to the Kansas City Star's Terez A. With notes like this from camp, we do wonder how much rope Alex Smith will get. On the other hand Mahomes can be a little bit too much of a gunslinger, and the Chiefs have playoff and Super Bowl aspirations. So they may not be willing to roll with the rookie.

DEN - QB Trevor Siemian feeling better with offense

Denver Broncos QB Trevor Siemian said he's felt like the offense has been clicking for him lately, like a switch was suddenly flipped. Siemian said he's felt more comfortable in the new offense and feels that he's in a good spot right now under new offensive coordinator Mike McCoy.

                                      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

While this may be true, there are enough reports out of camp painting Siemian as average for us to not be too excited by this news. Unfortunately for John Elway, Paxton Lynch just doesn't seem ready, and he may be stuck with average again this year. Average might really be an improvement over last year, though, as Siemian was inconsistent and erratic far too much. Most Fantasy GMs seem to feel the same, as he is the 30th quarterback coming off the board in drafts despite two of the better receivers in the NFL to throw to.

OAK - TE Jared Cook frequently targeted

Source: San Francisco Chronicle - Vic Tafur

Oakland Raiders TE Jared Cook has been thrown to often by QB Derek Carr this offseason, according to the San Francisco Chronicle's Vic Tafur. Carr is excited about what Cook brings to the table. 'When you add a guy like Jared Cook that runs a 4.3 [40-yard dash] or a 4.4 and he can outrun [defensive backs], [you] can throw him out wide and run different kinds of routes with him,' Carr said. 'We can do that kind of stuff because he is that talented.'

                                      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see how this translates, and Cook did look pretty good at times with Green Bay in 2016. On the other hand, the "at times" is the whole problem with Cook, who can never be consistent enough to provide reliable production for fantasy owners. That's probably why he is the No. 24 tight end going in drafts right now, 189th player off the board. He has skill, but he just doesn't seem to put it all together at once.

Updating an earlier report, Indianapolis Colts WR Phillip Dorsett (hamstring) is still bothered by a hamstring issue that kept him out of minicamp.

                                      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dorsett will just continue to fall behind guys like Chester Rogers as they vie for the No. 3 job, and it looks more and more like he was a wasted pick. We still don't know what is up with Andrew Luck and even if healthy, Luck isn't going to use his third receiver a ton, but if TY Hilton or Donte Moncrief get hurt, that spot could end up producing.

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott has been suspended six games for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, according to a source. Elliott is expected to file an appeal and has three business days to do so, and a hearing must be scheduled within 10 days of receipt of the notice, according to Article 46 of the collective bargaining agreement.

                                          [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Elliott will appeal, but we should proceed as if this will stand. He falls to a value anywhere from late second to fourth round. You'll only get him for six games in the fantasy regular season, but you can draft at running back to compensate for his absence and bank an extra first-round talent outside of the first, a huge advantage if you can sneak into the playoffs. It's a risky but bold strategy.

Philadelphia Eagles WR Jordan Matthews was traded along with a 2018 third-round selection to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for CB Ronald Darby on Friday, Aug. 11.

Darby is an instant upgrade at corner for the Eagles. A second-round pick in 2015, he had a good rookie season but Darby had a bit of a sophomore slump in 2016. The Eagles are counting on him bouncing back in 2017, and with two years left on his rookie deal it's a great move for Philadelphia.

Matthews joins Anquan Boldin and Zay Jones in the Bills cavalcade of slot receivers. He might not have a large role, make no mistake, the third round pick is the prize here for Buffalo.

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins was traded along with a 2018 sixth-round pick to the Los Angeles Rams for CB E.J. Gaines and a 2018 second-round selection.

Watkins takes a hit and should get fewer targets in Los Angeles. He also gets a downgrade in deep passing at quarterback. Still, he is ultra-talented and might not be held back more than DeAndre Hopkins or Allen Robinson. The Bills have a void in the passing game now and appear to be playing for next year. Todd Gurley's outlook improves and Jared Goff becomes a lot more interesting.

Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco (back) is expected to return to practice at some point during the preseason but will not play in any of the preseason games. The team said that Flacco is making good progress in his rehab and should be ready to play in Week 1.

Flacco's good progress is a positive sign about his recovery. He won't play in the preseason, but the fact that he's going to practice should lead to him starting Week 1 of the regular season.

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott and his representatives released a statement announcing their intentions to appeal the six-game suspension handed to him Friday, Aug. 11 for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.

No surprise here. Elliott's suspension is at six games right now, but his lawyers will work to get that reduced or outright eliminated. If you're drafting this weekend just take Elliott with the idea that he'll miss a month or so of the regular season.

Washington Redskins RB Rob Kelley is safe atop the depth chart for the time being, in the opinion of beat writer Rich Tandler.

                                          [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Kelley is worth a 9th-10th round pick as a matchup RB2/Flex play with a low ceiling, but high rush volume floor. He could still be threatened by Samaje Perine by year's end.

Ebron's absence was long enough that we should really worry if this comes up again, but not long enough to greatly move him on our draft boards.

Washington Redskins RB Samaje Perine carried six times for 15 yards (2.5 YPC) in his preseason debut Thursday, Aug. 10. He also fumbled, dropped a pass and struggled in pass protection.

                                          [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Perine isn't going to sniff the starting job soon. Expect his ADP to fall past Rob Kelley's and Kelley's to rise as high as the 8th-9th round on this development. Perine is still a good stash in deeper bench leagues.

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson has 'a lot to build on,' following his first preseason game, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. 'There's a lot to correct,' O'Brien said. 'He knows that. He was about 50-50 right or wrong on some of the schemes we ran.'

Watson looked better against pressure than Tom Savage, but missed an easy throw or two. Savage will get a ton of chances to fail, but Watson should take over for good at some point this year unless Savage improves greatly.

Retired Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson has been contacted by at least a half-dozen teams to gauge his interest in returning to the NFL, according to Mike Freeman of BleacherReport.com.

The Lions would need to give up his rights in a trade, which might be very difficult to pull off. Still, very deep dynasty league owners should add Johnson just in case because the potential reward is so great.

New York Giants RB Orleans Darkwa has been splitting first-team reps with Paul Perkins and seeing even more work than usual with Shane Vereen unavailable recently. According to the New York Daily News' Pat Leonard, Darkwa appears to be challenging for a feature role.

                                          [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Perkins is a smaller, speedy back while Darkwa has a bit more size and more power to his game. The Giants are going to use a RBBC no matter who wins the starting job in 2017. Perkins is coming off the board at RB29 (6.10) in 12-team PPR leagues while Darkwa is not currently getting drafted in such leagues.

Jones was acquired for a song and this preseason could get him on track to be developed as Philip Rivers eventual replacement. Head coach Anthony Lynn knows Jones from their time together in Buffalo, which is a potential good sign and endorsement.

It's a good sign for the young back. We appreciate his dynasty value, but in redraft leagues Williams is less of a factor as a backup to LeSean McCoy. However, if something happens to McCoy, Williams could step into the starting role and RB2-ish value for his fantasy owners.

                                                Sunday Update

TB - PK Roberto Aguayo let go

Source: Tampa Bay Times - Rick Stroud

Tampa Bay Buccaneers PK Roberto Aguayo - the team's second-round pick in 2016 - was waived Saturday, Aug. 12.

Well, that pick didn't work out. If you move up in the second round to take a kicker he had better be a 10-year starter. Aguayo struggled as a rookie and those struggles continued into this year and the preseason. Make fun of any fantasy owners in your league that draft him off outdated paper cheatsheets.

MIA - RB Jay Ajayi remains sidelined

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi (concussion) did not participate in practice Saturday, Aug. 12.

Ajayi is in the concussion protocol, and there's no telling when he'll be ready to practice. This puts his regular season into some question. Until we get some clarity, Ajayi at his current ADP near the top of the second round may be too high.

MIA - QB Ryan Tannehill placed on IR

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Saturday, Aug. 12.

As expected, this move ends the 2017 season for Tannehill. He'll get knee surgery after opting to not have surgery for a partially torn ACL last year. Jay Cutler will now move into the starting job for the Dolphins. He was solid under Adam Gase when the two were with the Bears, and Cutler will keep the Dolphins passing game at (or maybe slightly above) the level it was with Tannehill.

PIT - WR Martavis Bryant to practice in full Sunday

                                                Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant participated in a closed practice session Thursday, Aug. 10, and has been cleared for full practice Sunday, Aug. 13, after the Steelers received word from the league earlier in the week he was allowed to rejoin the team.

                                                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bryant is ready to go this weekend, and there's a good chance we could see him in the second preseason game for the Steelers. On the field, Bryant is a big play just waiting to happen with the ability to change your week-to-week outlook. Bryant is WR25 in 12-team PPR leagues right now, going off the board at the top of the fifth round. Don't expect that to stay the same if he makes highlight plays in the preseason.

CIN - RB Joe Mixon runs well in debut

                                                Source: ESPN.com

Cincinnati Bengals RB Joe Mixon had six carries for 31 yards and one catch for 11 yards in a 23-12 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Friday, Aug. 11. 'Once I got that first carry and got the first-game jitters out of the way, I adjusted,' Mixon said.

                                                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mixon is listed behind Jeremy Hill and Gio Bernard on the depth chart...for now. He's clearly the best back the Bengals have and we're expecting him to rise to the top of this backfield. Watch this competition continue to unfold as the preseason rolls on.

Philadelphia Eagles WR Alshon Jeffery (shoulder) was limited to individual drills during practice Saturday, Aug. 12.

That will be the case until Jeffery is closer to full strength. The Eagles may consider not playing Jeffery in the second preseason game.

Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed (toe) will be reevaluated after the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers, according to head coach Jay Gruden.

Reed is wearing a special insert in his shoe to help with the problem. We'll see if that helps him or makes no difference. Reed can be a fantasy force if healthy, but he makes for a risky fantasy pick with his long injury history.

Minnesota Vikings RB Bishop Sankey (knee) was waived/injured Saturday, Aug. 12.

That could be a wrap for his pro career. A second-round pick out of Washington in 2014, Sankey just didn't have the juice to make it in the pros. Add in his problems staying healthy and you can see how his pro career has been a major disappointment.

It's just a veteran day of rest for the star wideout. He's going off the board at WR13 (3.02) in 12-team PPR leagues right now.

Baltimore Ravens WR Breshad Perriman (hamstring) did not participate in practice Saturday, Aug. 12.

Perriman has been banged up for most of his career. The Ravens need to make sure he's over this hamstring injury before rushing the speedy WR back to action. It will actually be news when he does participate in practice.

JAX - RB Leonard Fournette confident

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Scott Gleeson

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette said the NFL was 'a lot slower' than he expected following his preseason debut Thursday, Aug. 10, against the New England Patriots. 'I think, to me, it was really easy,' Fournette said.

                                                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fournette should be confident as he's incredibly talented. The speed of the game is one thing, but it's the discipline of the game that younger players need to get used to. In the NFL, Fournette won't be able to regularly take advantage of defenders out of position like he did in college at LSU. We're projecting over 1,000 all-purpose yards and around 9 touchdowns for the rookie in 2017.

CLE - QB Brock Osweiler, QB DeShone Kizer splitting reps

Cleveland Browns QBs Brock Osweiler and DeShone Kizer are splitting snaps with the first-team offense during practice Saturday, Aug. 12.

Osweiler is the starter for now, but Kizer is likely the future of the team. If Kizer continues to show well, then he could win the starting job at some point during the year...even perhaps at the start of the season.

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Hurns (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Saturday, Aug. 12.

This might just be a day of rest for Hurns. Last year it was hamstring injuries that held him back, but he bulked up this offseason in an effort to avoid that problem this year.

LAR - WR Tavon Austin still has role in Rams' offense

                                                Source: ESPN.com - Alden Gonzalez

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin 'definitely has a place' even after the team acquired WR Sammy Watkins from the Buffalo Bills on Friday, Aug. 11, according to general manager Les Snead.

That role within the offense did get smaller once Watkins was added via trade. The team won't go out of their way to get Austin the ball, and fantasy owners shouldn't have been thrilled by his prospects anyway.
