CIN - OLB Vontaze Burfict suspended three games

Cincinnati Bengals LB Vontaze Burfict has been suspended for the first three games of the 2016 regular season for repeated violations of the player safety rules.

According to Burfict's agent, the suspension will be appealed. With such an emphasis on player safety, targeting a player in the way that Burfict did Steelers WR Antonio Brown is totally unacceptable. This sentence may be reduced (one game?), but we don't think it's completely eliminated.

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (shoulder) likely will be able to play in the divisional round playoff game against the Denver Broncos Sunday, Jan. 17.

His shoulder injury basically comes down to pain tolerance. Roethlisberger will likely be out there against the Broncos, but one hit could mean we'll see Landry Jones come into the game. The Steelers are up against it on the road against a Broncos defense that swarms the quarterback early and often.

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins will be re-signed this offseason, and head coach Jay Gruden said the organization plans to continue to build around their quarterback.

A fantastic hiring here. The Dolphins seem to be on the right track. They've smashed it out of the park with the Adam Gase and Joseph hirings in our eyes. Gase will take care of the entire team, but he should really spark the offense and QB Ryan Tannehill. Joseph is one of the hottest candidates out there for a promotion to DC. He's smart, aggressive and a well-respected coach. Joseph should be able to get the most out of a talented-but-disappointing Miami defense.

They should just hand him the gig. This is an internal promotion basically, and perhaps the main reason behind the decision to get rid of Lovie Smith. Koetter worked well with QB Jameis Winston this season, and keeping the coach around would greatly help Winston take even greater strides in 2016.

Washington Redskins WR DeSean Jackson is due $3.75 million and WR Pierre Garcon $7.6 million in 2016 -- the final year in each of their contracts. Each receiver is entering their age-29 season.

Even though Hue Jackson is considered to be the front-runner with the 49ers, they're still going to look at other options. Coughlin has clearly not retired, but instead just needed a change after years of missing the playoffs with the Giants. The 49ers are in a rebuilding process, and Coughlin might be able to get them back on the right track.

'It didn't hurt when I reached back to throw,' Roethlisberger said of his heroic late-game drive. 'But it was pushing forward to throw and then the end of the throw. So I definitely felt like I was shortening up my motion up a little bit, which is why we threw some screens, and couldn't really get the ball down the field… I think it just more affected how I could throw it.' He's unsure how much he'll do in practice this week.

He's day-to-day, and we feel Roethlisberger will play against the Broncos on Sunday. His effectiveness as a passer could be severely limited by this shoulder injury, but even a banged up Roethlisberger is better than a 100 percent Landry Jones.

That's the wise move by Quinn and the Lions. Even if Johnson decides he's going to play, we might see the team ask him to restructure his contract. Johnson is due a whopping $15.95 million in 2016.

Former Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan is strongly back in the mix for the San Francisco 49ers' vacant head coaching position. He has already met with the 49ers regarding the job.

Shanahan was the team's offensive coordinator the last time the 49ers won the Super Bowl. He then won two more Super Bowls as the head coach in Denver. Early reports are that Jones had a bad reaction to substance "that is not illegal". The Boston Globe reported that the substance was synthetic marijuana which is not illegal in the state. Per ESPN, on Tuesday, after the Boston Herald first reported about Jones, the Patriots released the following statement: "Chandler Jones was admitted to the hospital on Sunday and released that day. He reported to work on time Monday morning and has participated in all meetings and practices since then."

The New York Giants officially announced that Ben McAdoo will be their next head coach Thursday, Jan. 14. He's been the Giants offensive coordinator the last two seasons. New York's offense ranked 10th and eighth, respectively, in the NFL the last two seasons. QB Eli Manning's numbers have improved in each of the past two years, too. Manning completed 58.5% of his passes in 2013 for 3,818 yards, 18 touchdowns and 27 interceptions but threw a career-high 35 touchdowns this year.

Whether this also means Colin Kaepernick might have a coach who will try and do something with him remains to be seen, though he isn't exactly a perfect fit for what Kelly does.

Peterson allowed a league-best 45.6 passer rating in coverage. CB Justin Bethel was targeted a league-high 22 times in Weeks 16 and 17, and Packers QB Aaron Rodgers threw at Bethel a season-high 14 times in their first matchup, resulting in seven catches for 75 yards and an interception.

You only need to know one thing: is Jones wearing his hoodie? Ever since Jones went with the mid-80s high school look he has played pretty well. New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis reiterated that QB Drew Brees will remain with the organization. Brees turns 37 Friday, Jan. 15, and will count $30 million against the 2016 salary cap in the final year of his contract. Loomis said Brees won't be released or traded. The only thing undecided is whether Brees will play out the last year of his deal or if the Saints will look at an extension. Brees is due $20 million in salary and bonuses this year. New Orleans is projected to be around $10 million over the projected salary cap of $150 million.

The Giants and Dolphins sniffed around Smith as a potential head coach, but he didn't land either job. It's interesting to note that new head coach Dirk Koetter served as Smith's offensive coordinator when the two were with the Falcons a few years ago.

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick's 2016 contract becomes fully guaranteed for injury come April 1, and the 49ers would have to pay him $11.9 million. Many believe the 49ers might try to trade or release him before then.

Early reports indicate that Kaepernick is not going to be the team's quarterback in 2016. New head coach Chip Kelly may want to go with a better passer, and he'll make a move to find a different quarterback. We can't imagine any team trading for Kaepernick, so look for him to be released before the April 1st deadline.
