NFL Player News - Week of January 12th
PIT - Dick LeBeau leaving team

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette

Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau has parted ways with the team, according to the Urbana Daily Citizen in Ohio.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's sad to see the end of an era in Pittsburgh. LeBeau is already in the Hall of Fame because of his playing career. We think he should also go in as a defensive coordinator. His zone-blitz schemes have been revolutionary and shaped the game incredibly. He may not be done coaching, although there were rumors about LeBeau retiring after the 2014 season. Stay tuned.

SEA - QB Russell Wilson to be highest-paid QB

    Source: NFL.com - Chris Wesseling

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson is expected to become the NFL's highest -paid quarterback this offseason when the team signs him to a long-term extension.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wilson has certainly outplayed his contract to this point. He was a third-round pick by the Seahawks in the 2012 NFL draft, and Wilson was among the lowest paid players at his position. It's great to see his hard work is going to lead to a big payday.

KC - WR LaVon Brazill, WR Joe Morgan worked out

    Source: ESPN - Adam Caplan

Free-agent WR LaVon Brazill (Colts) and WR Joe Morgan (Saints) worked out for the Kansas City Chiefs Thursday, Jan. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brazill has good speed to get down the field, but his time with the Colts was a disappointment. Morgan was always a tease with the Saints because of his size/speed combination, but he's never produced consistently. Both are only worth monitoring in super deep dynasty leagues.

PIT - No surgery for QB Ben Roethlisberger

    Source: ESPN.com - Scott Brown

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (knee) will not need surgery on his knee this offseason and should be able to have a normal offseason, according to his agent.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for Roethlisberger here. Expect the Steelers QB to continue performing at a high level for both the Steelers and for fantasy owners.

MIA - WR Mike Wallace's status for 2015 uncertain

Source: South Florida Sun-Sentinel - Omar Kelly

Miami Dolphins WR Mike Wallace's roster spot could be in jeopardy next season, because he is scheduled to make $9.9 million in 2015 with $3 million of the salary becoming guaranteed in the first week of March.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

You just had a feeling after his cap number was $17 million in 2014, Wallace might not be on the roster unless he had an outstanding year. Having 67 catches for 862 yards is not outstanding...although the 10 receiving touchdowns in 2014 was nice. Executive vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum said the team will make the most responsible decision for them on Wallace.

Wallace has to be gone after his decision of not wanting to play in the 2nd half of week 17. Some of these idiots just don't understand the opportunities they have.

DAL - QB Tony Romo played with finger injury
Source: The Dallas Morning News - Rainer Sabin
Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (finger) said he played the divisional-round playoff game against the Green Bay Packers with damaged ligaments in his left ring finger.
        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Romo has certainly showed his toughness this year. He has played with a back injury for most of the season and now this.

GB - QB Aaron Rodgers expects to be limited
        Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky
Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (calf) said he doesn't expect to be fully healthy for next weekend's conference title game against the Seattle Seahawks, but he said he will play in the game.
        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We're not shocked here. Rodgers will be limited, and the Packers will take it easy on him as they get ready for a big game in Seattle.

DEN - QB Peyton Manning undecided on future
        Source: The Denver Post
Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning said he will have to take some time to see how he feels before deciding whether or not he plays next season.
        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This of course is not official but there's been rumblings that some folks feel that Manning could be done. Stay tuned.

IND - WR Reggie Wayne not a factor
        Source: ESPN.com
Indianapolis Colts WR Reggie Wayne had no catches and was targeted just once in the team's 24-13 win over the Denver Broncos in the divisional round of the playoffs Sunday, Jan. 11.
        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Wayne has seen better days. He's not the same player he used to be, and Wayne is going to be a free agent in 2015. Wayne would like to stay with the team, but that's no guarantee. We can't imagine the market being white hot for his services.

IND - Dan Herron shows versatility
        Source: ESPN.com
Indianapolis Colts RB Dan Herron ran 23 times for 63 yards and a score and added eight catches for 32 yards in the team's 24-13 win over the Denver Broncos Sunday, Jan. 11.
        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Herron was used in many different ways against the Broncos. While the overall numbers are not overwhelming, he did do enough to keep the chains moving on multiple plays.

DEN - QB Peyton Manning struggles in loss
        Source: ESPN.com
Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning completed 26 of his 46 pass attempts and finished with 211 yards and one touchdown in a 24-13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in the divisional round of the playoffs Sunday, Jan. 11.
        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We might have seen the last of Peyton Manning in a Broncos uniform and in the NFL. At his post-game press conference, Manning was non-committal when asked if he was going to return in 2015.

SEA - Torn ACL for WR Paul Richardson
        Source: ESPN.com - Terry Blount
Seattle Seahawks WR Paul Richardson (knee) will miss the remainder of the playoffs and could miss the start of next season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the divisional round of the playoffs Saturday, Jan. 10.
        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Bad news for the rookie receiver here. He missed the 2012 season at Colorado with a knee injury, and Richardson was known to have durability issues in college before that. We'll see if he can come back at some time next year. The Seahawks could put him on PUP at the beginning of the 2015 season.

GB - Quiet game for WR Jordy Nelson
        Source: ESPN.com
Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson finished with just two catches on five targets for 22 yards in a 26-21 win over the Dallas Cowboys in the divisional round of the playoffs Sunday, Jan. 11.
        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Cowboys worked diligently to slow down Nelson, and it worked. However, the other assets in the Packers passing game were able to come through in the victory.

DAL - RB DeMarco Murray solid in loss
        Source: ESPN.com
Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray had 25 carries for a game-high 125 yards and a score in a 26-21 loss to the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round of the playoffs Sunday, Jan. 11.
        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Murray did everything he possibly could to help the Cowboys. In the end, it wasn't enough for Dallas to come out victorious.

GB - QB Aaron Rodgers shines despite injury
        Source: ESPN.com
Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (calf) threw for 316 yards and three scores in a 26-21 win over the Dallas Cowboys in the divisional-round playoff game Sunday, Jan. 11.
        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Rodgers was dealing on Sunday afternoon. His calf injury didn't seem to bother him that much, and he had a ton of success throwing the ball. Rodgers didn't do anything on the ground (four attempts, minus-4 yards rushing) against the Cowboys.

BAL - WR Torrey Smith wants to stay in Baltimore
        Source: CSNBaltimore.com - Bo Smolka
Baltimore Ravens WR Torrey Smith said he wants to stay with the team and that he would love to have a deal signed before he becomes a free agent in March.
        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Smith is a fantastic deep target, but his production has lacked consistency in the pros. We can't imagine the market being white hot for his services, and he's certainly not a candidate for the franchise tag (should be around $12 million for WRs). We'll see if the Ravens find a way to come to an agreement with the veteran receiver.

IND - RB Trent Richardson inactive
Source: USA TODAY Sports - Lindsay H. Jones
Indianapolis Colts RB Trent Richardson has been ruled inactive for the Divisional Round playoff game against the Denver Broncos.
        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Even when he's active, he's inactive. In all seriousness, Richardson has been a huge disappointment during his time with the Colts. The former third overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft has struggled to stay healthy and productive as a pro.

MIA - No pay cut for WR Mike Wallace
Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero
Miami Dolphins WR Mike Wallace is not willing to accept a pay cut this offseason, according to a source.
        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
He doesn't want to take a pay cut, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. Wallace is scheduled to count $12.1 million against the salary cap in 2015. The Dolphins still owe him $9.6 million in dead money. Post June 1st, that amount would fall to $5.2 million.

BAL - WR Steve Smith plans to return
Source: The Baltimore Sun - Aaron Wilson
Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith plans to play next season, according to a source.
        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Smith might have been contemplating retirement earlier in his career, but that's not the case now. His time with the Ravens has rejuvenated Smith, and he was on fire to begin the 2014 season. Smith's production trailed off as the season went on, but he should still be counted on 2015 as Torrey Smith is a free agent.

GB - QB Aaron Rodgers feeling better
          Source: ESPNMilwaukee.com - Jason Wilde
Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (calf) is feeling better than he did at this point last week, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.
          [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Smoke Screen? Or Real info? If true, this is good news for the Packers. However, Rodgers is still going to be limited during the week of practice leading up the NFC Championship game. He'll have to be ready to take a beating against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

DEN - QB Peyton Manning decision has target window
          Source: ESPN - Andrew Brandt
Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning's $19 million salary for 2015 becomes guaranteed March 9.
          [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Manning's quad injury that was revealed as more severe than originally thought sheds a lot of light on what we saw from the veteran quarterback. He has to pass a physical for that money to be fully guaranteed this year, but at this point in his career Manning is not concerned with money. In fact, the Broncos could be asking Manning to take a pay cut if they want to go after some high-dollar free agents.

DEN - QB Peyton Manning has torn quadriceps
          Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter
Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning (quadriceps) played Sunday, Jan. 11, and the final month of the season, with a torn right quadriceps muscle, according to two sources.
          [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
There's some discussion about "torn" vs "strained" here. But just watching Manning it was easy to see that something was wrong. Many mistakenly put the blame on his lack of arm strength when in fact it was his leg failing him. A healthy Manning probably looks a lot better than he did over the last few weeks of the season and in the postseason.

NE - RB LeGarrette Blount in line for big game?
          Source: ESPN.com
New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount ran for 166 yards and four touchdowns against the Indianapolis Colts in the playoffs last year, and RB Jonas Gray ran for 201 yards and four scores in Week 11.
          [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Colts struggle to stop the run, and the Patriots can run the ball all day if they want. At home, we're expecting the Patriots to dominate the AFC Championship.

SEA - RB Marshawn Lynch likes scoring at home
          Source: ESPN.com
Seattle Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch has scored 11 of his 13 rushing touchdowns at home this season, including two in a Week 1 win over the Green Bay Packers.
          [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Packers are going to have their hands full with Lynch. He's the centerpiece of the Seahawks offense, and Lynch will be used to grind down the Packers defense.

DEN - WR Wes Welker's targets fall off
Source: The Boston Globe - Ben Volin
Denver Broncos WR Wes Welker was targeted 64 times in 14 games this season after being targeted 110 times in 13 games the previous season.
          [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Welker's role was minimized in Denver this year. The emergence of Emmanuel Sanders, plus the Broncos switch to a run-heavy offense, caused the change. Welker is likely done with the Broncos, and he enters free agency in 2015.

BUF - RB C.J. Spiller happy about Rex Ryan hire
          Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra
Buffalo Bills impending free-agent RB C.J. Spiller said he likes the team's hiring of head coach Rex Ryan, because Ryan likes to run the ball and have a physical offense.
          [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Spiller is a free agent this year, and there's no guarantee that he'll return to the Bills. We'll have to wait and see what happens once free agency opens up. The market is unlikely to be on fire for Spiller's services. He's talented, but the oft-injured back has failed to perform up to expectations after being selected in the first round of the 2010 NFL draft.

SEA - Kevin Norwood to have bigger role?
          Source: ESPN.com - Terry Blount
Seattle Seahawks WR Kevin Norwood will likely have a bigger role in the offense after the season-ending injury to WR Paul Richardson (knee). Norwood had nine catches for 102 yards this year, but he was inactive for the teams' divisional round win.
          [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Norwood is a good player who runs strong routes and has very good hands. He's quicker than fast, and Norwood could develop into a strong pro.

IND - QB Andrew Luck hasn't beaten Pats
          Source: ESPN.com - Mike Wells
Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck is 0-3 and has thrown eight interceptions in his three career games against the New England Patriots. “I’d like to think I’m a better quarterback and we’re a better team and more well-equipped to handle the unknown and the unforeseen,” said Luck, who threw for 303 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in a 42-20 loss to the Patriots at home Nov. 16.
          [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We'll see if Luck can actually get it done this week in Foxborough. The Colts are playing hot right now, and Luck will certainly go down swinging in the AFC Championship game.

NE - QB Tom Brady lethal on quick throws late
Source: Boston Herald - Jeff Howe
New England Patriots QB Tom Brady was 16-for-16 for 148 yards and two touchdowns in the second half of the AFC divisional-round playoff game Sunday, Jan. 11, when he threw the ball within 2 seconds of the snap.
          [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Brady was 4th in the NFL this year with an average time before pass (TBP) of 2.34 seconds. The average for the entire league is 2.53 seconds.

MIA - WR Mike Wallace quit multiple times
Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero
Miami Dolphins WR Mike Wallace has reportedly quit on the team multiple times this season. He told his position coach before halftime of the season finale, and later repeated it to his head coach, that if he wasn't getting the football thrown to him, there was no need for him to play. He allegedly did the same thing in Week 15 against the New England Patriots.
          [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Making $17 million in 2014 wasn't enough for Wallace. He wants the ball more--and that's not a bad thing--but there are proper ways to go about getting it. We'll see if the two sides part ways at some point before the start of the 2015 season.

DEN - QB Peyton Manning tanks on lengthy throws
          Source: Colts.com - Kevin Bowen
Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning was 2-for-12 on passes that traveled 15 yards or more Sunday, Jan. 11, in the divisional-round playoff loss.
          [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Manning was awful in the loss to the Colts. He's been basically playing on one leg with a quadriceps injury. We'll see if he wants to come back and try to get to the Super Bowl again in 2015.

GB - RB Eddie Lacy misses time

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (asthma) missed most of the second quarter of the NFC divisional-round playoff game Sunday, Jan. 11, due to an asthma attack.
          [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Lacy is going to be key for the Packers if they want to beat the Seahawks on Sunday. His hammering style is a must to soften up the tough Seattle front.

lmao @ if the ball isn't getting thrown to him, then there's no reason to play...is he really that much of an idiot, Mike Wallace?
Even if he runs around and attracted one of the top defenders or drawing double coverage, that's still impacting the offense and opens up opportunities.

Randy Moss did the same thing at the end of his time in NE and probably other places. Don't these guys realize it's a team and they can't be the spoiled brats that they were in college or high school? I wish the team said, if you're not willing to work then there is no point of us paying you.

Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles will be hired by the New York Jets for their head coaching position, a source involved in the process said Tuesday, Jan. 13. He is expected to officially sign a four-year deal Wednesday, Jan. 14.

Bowles is on the other end of the personality spectrum from departed head coach Rex Ryan, but like Ryan, he's a highly regarded defensive mind. He guided the Cardinals to the #5 ranked defense for points allowed in the league during a season where they lost several starters.

Robinson should get an opportunity in 2015. Hopefully, he will stay healthy and play up to his potential if he does get a larger role. Mark Ingram is a free agent, so Robinson could enter training camp as the lead back for the Saints.

We're still not ready to give up on Williams in super deep dynasty leagues. He was an amazingly talented runner during his time in college at Virginia Tech. If you've got the roster space in a deeper league, go ahead and hold on Williams if you can.

Denver Broncos QB Brock Osweiler continues to receive high reviews inside the organization as the eventual successor to QB Peyton Manning, according to sources inside the organization. Osweiler has gone 100-for-170 for 1,089 yards (6.4 yards per attempt) and a four-to-five touchdown-to-interception ratio of 12 preseason games and some mop-up appearances in the regular season since being drafted in 2012.

Dynasty owners take note here. Osweiler has the upside of a Ben Roethlisberger if he completely plays up to his potential. It's a longshot, but apparently the Broncos have liked what he's shown over the last three years.

Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning will be given time to make up his mind on the future of his playing career, but general manager John Elway would very much like to have him return for the 2015 season and beyond. 'Just know how much we want you back, but the thing is for you to take the time and get away from this,' Elway said he told Manning. Elway will keep in touch with Manning over the next several weeks, and Manning will be 'involved in the process' of finding a new head coach.

Manning is going to take some time off before he makes his decision about next year. If healthy, Manning could still be an effective starter to get you to the playoffs. Whether or not he could win another Super Bowl is unknown.

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates put up a very strong year in 2014 despite being written off as being too old just several seasons earlier. 'I don't even understand,' offensive coordinator Frank Reich said last month. 'I don't understand how there's no physical drop-off in his game. None. I mean, I never saw him when he was 25, but what he does off the line of scrimmage, how crafty he is and the physical skill to execute how smoothly he runs -- maybe he slowed down, but I just don't see it. I don't see any dent in the armor.' Gates' contract runs through next season, and he plans to honor it. Gates passed Lance Alworth for the most receiving yards in franchise history this year, and he also became just the fourth tight end in history to move past 10,000 career receiving yards.
                        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Ladarius Green failed to emerge this year with the way Gates continues to play. He's a favorite target of Philip Rivers, and there's no need to think his play will drop off severely until we see more of a decline.

                        Source: ESPN.com - Mike Wells
New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount ran for 166 yards against the Indianapolis Colts in the divisional matchup between the two teams in 2013, and RB Jonas Gray slashed Indy for 201 yards on the ground this past November. The Patriots used an offense that featured a power-back look with a sixth offensive lineman against the Colts in November. 'As a defensive player, you don't want to ever have that happen again,' Colts DE Cory Redding said. 'We didn't have our best game. It's up to us to do what we've done the past few weeks, to make sure that never happens again.' New England rushed for just 14 total yards in their divisional win over the Baltimore Ravens last weekend, but they pretty much abandoned the run in the second half.

Gray's game was epic...and he's barely been in the box score since that time. The Colts will again struggle to stop the Patriots on the ground. It could be a long day for the Colts defense in the AFC Championship Game.

                        Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer
Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray, who will be a free agent this March, could receive a franchise or transition tag from the team if they reach a multi-year deal with WR Dez Bryant first. 'I'm not worried about my future,' Murray said. 'I just lost a big game, the biggest game of my life. Just not worried about it right now. Just relax with my family and get away from it for a little bit.'
                        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Murray is the biggest name free agent at the running back position. The Cowboys could prevent him from testing the open market by placing the franchise tag on him. The single-season number for a franchise-tagged back will be around $11 million in 2015. If tagged, Murray would have until mid-July to work out a new long-term contract with the team.

Source: Sports on Earth - Ross Tucker
Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning will likely play in 2015, according to a source close to Manning. 'I think he'll be back,' the source said. 'He was just emotional after the game because of the disappointment of the loss and everything that went into it. He just needs to take a month off and get away from it all and he'll be fine.'
                        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Manning was certainly emotional--and non-committal-- after the loss to the Colts in the Divisional Round. Perhaps with some time away, Manning will decide to play football in 2015. His cap number is $21.5 million in 2015, and the team has until March before that number becomes guaranteed.

Seattle Seahawks WR Paul Richardson (knee) was placed on season-ending injured reserve Monday, Jan. 12.

A sad way for Richardson's rookie season to end. Richardson had a history of knee problems while in college at Colorado, and this injury could prevent him from being ready at the start of the 2015 season. His dynasty upside certainly takes a hit here. After so many knee problems, Richardson may never fully be able to develop into the player he could have been as a pro.

Manuel has a very similar skillset and weaknesses to Colin Kaepernick, who new Bills OC Greg Roman made a success (at least for a few years) in San Francisco. Manuel's value is up on these moves, but could dwindle back to near zero by the time the regular season starts if he can't show well in the competition.

We saw that Rodgers managed last week dealing with this injury, even scrambling just a little bit. But that was after two weeks of rest. This week, he's coming off just one week. He was able to find his receivers, complete passes and did a good job even though he was limited in last week's game. We expect him to struggle more against the blitzing Seattle defense. We think his numbers will be down; in part because of pressure, in part because of his injury and in part because of Green Bay running the ball to take pressure off.

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (knee) was limited in practice Thursday, Jan. 15, with a sore knee, according to head coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy said he thinks Lacy will be ready to play in the NFC Championship this weekend.

Lacy isn't missing this game, so expect him to play and get a heavy load to take the pressure off Aaron Rodgers by keeping the defense honest. The Packers have a huge task in front of them, and the key to winning is using Lacy early and often. They need to soften up the Seahawks defense by running the ball and keeping pressure off Aaron Rodgers.

The only was Lacy is missing this game is if he is kidnapped, but even then we'd expect him to show up dragging a chair he is handcuffed to, removing the blindfold as the game started. He should get leaned on quite a bit and while it won't be easy against the Seattle front seven, he should see success as long as Green Bay is committed to the run.

He was red hot after he left Buffalo but the bloom has left the rose by now and we wouldn't be shocked if he didn't have a head coaching job come next season. He'd be an interesting fit for the Broncos, and might be a good choice to transition from Peyton Manning (whether he stays or not) to whatever comes next.

Congratulations to a player who won a lot of fantasy championships out there. Sanders had a heckuva year, but how effective will he be next season if Peyton Manning doesn't come back? Or Adam Gase is gone? The future is up in the air for the Broncos since they've been bounced from the playoffs and John Fox was fired.

BUF - Buffalo would like RB C.J. Spiller back
                            Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown
Buffalo Bills impending free-agent RB C.J. Spiller is a player the Bills will try to re-sign this offseason, according to general manager Doug Whaley.
                            [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Spiller may be attracted to a run-heavy offense like the one Rex Ryan is talking about. He has been very good when healthy and used correctly, but running backs aren't breaking the bank in free agency these days, so Buffalo might be the best option for him.

CIN - QB Andy Dalton won't have competition

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton is not expected to enter next season with competition at quarterback, as the Bengals are not expected to draft another quarterback this year. “He’s our guy and we’re not going to shy away from that,” says offensive coordinator Hue Jackson of Dalton and quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese offers, “He was better with the intangibles this year and the ball was better coming out of his hand. You could see that right away when he came back from the last offseason.” Jackson is a fan of backup QB Jason Campbell, and the team was impressed with young QB A.J. McCarron.
                            [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Nobody should be surprised here. The Bengals don't make changes quickly, so don't expect them to pull the rip cord on Dalton very soon. He's getting them to the playoffs, so they'll be content with that for a little longer and hope he learns not to implode in the postseason. He wasn't great this year in postseason play, but he wasn't the reason they lost (well, not all of it) either.

The Buffalo Bills have hired Bobby April III (Jets) as their linebackers coach, Karl Dunbar (Jets) as their defensive line coach, Tim McDonald (Jets) as their defensive backs coach, Eric Smith (Jets) as their assistant special teams coach, Tony Sparano Jr. (Jets) as their tight ends coach and Jeff Weeks (Jets) as their assistant defensive line coach.

Rex Ryan's new coaching staff is taking shape with some interesting hires. Of course, the one which could matter most is Greg Roman, offensive coordinator. Ryan has always struggled with managing his offense, and if he doesn't get his choice of coordinator right, this will continue and could sink him in Buffalo as it did in New York.

Daniels may not have a ton of options outside of Baltimore, and he was a decent fit in the offense. On the other hand, Dennis Pitta is still under contract and if he's OK coming back through injury, Daniels' impact will be minimal.

The Chicago Bears have hired former Denver Broncos head coach John Fox as their new head coach, according to a source.

Fox took the Broncos to the playoffs four years in a row as the AFC West division winner. He's a successful coach who is known as being player friendly. Fox can build a strong defense, but it will take a bit of time in Chicago. What we don't know is how he'll mesh with quarterback Jay Cutler.

He's not going to miss this game for any reason. However, he's not going to look like his normal self. This calf injury could limit how much (and how effectively) Rodgers scrambles to keep plays alive against the Seahawks.

Lacy is the key player for the Packers this Sunday. If the Packers can smash box against the Seahawks, it will protect Aaron Rodgers as he deals with a calf injury. Lacy can wear down an opponent as the game goes on, and Seattle's defense can be run on if a team is willing.

Spiller, who will be a free agent this offseason, could be eyeing a move to the New York Jets, where he could be reunited with his former offensive coordinator in Chan Gailey. “There is that familiarity between me and him in that offense,” Spiller said. “So that would be a perfect match. Who knows what can happen, but I’d be foolish not to have those guys on my list. I had my best years in the league with Chan. So it’d be dumb not to give it serious thought.”

Spiller had 1,703 total yards, eight touchdowns and 43 catches in 2012 with Gailey. The Jets have Bilal Powell as an undrafted free agent in 2015, but Chris Johnson is no lock to make it through cuts. His salary cap hit is $5.2 million this year with around $1.7 million in dead money. Spiller could be had for a decent price on the open market this offseason.

He scored 10 touchdowns in 2014, but Wallace still seems to lack chemistry with quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Wallace is known as a speedy deep target, but his 12.8 yards per catch ranked 44th in the league last year. He ran 452 routes (31st) and was targeted 111 times (30th) in 2014 as well.

Free-agent offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan may be getting interest from the Denver Broncos for a vacant coaching position, according to league sources.

We're likely to see Shanahan as an offensive coordinator for the Broncos if Gary Kubiak is hired as the head coach. Kubiak is interviewing with the Broncos on Sunday, and we're expecting a decision some time soon after that.

JAX - RB Greg Jones signed

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed free-agent FB Greg Jones Thursday, Jan. 15. It was a one-day contract so Jones could officially retire as a Jaguar.

Nice move here. Jones carved out a nice pro career after coming out of Florida State years ago. He won't show up much in the stat box, but Jones was a punishing fullback who could smash open holes for the back behind him.

GB - QB Aaron Rodgers still dealing with pain

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (calf) said his calf injury was painful the entire game last weekend against the Dallas Cowboys and that it was a little worse after the team's win.

Rodgers admitted that it's simply of matter of dealing with the pain, adding that he's having treatment around the clock and the calf will be good Sunday.

SF - Mike Shanahan may be OC candidate
Source: NBC4 Washington - Dianna Marie Russini
Former head coach Mike Shanahan (Redskins) may be a candidate for the San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator job.

This is Mike and not Kyle Shanahan. It would be interesting if the senior Shanahan went back to being an offensive coordinator. He won two Super Bowls as the head coach of the Broncos, but his time as Washington's head coach did not turn out well. We thought Shanahan would take some time off then get a head coaching gig, but perhaps he will start back at the coordinator level with his old team. He was the 49ers OC from 1992-94.

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski has 17 catches for 297 yards and one touchdown in four career games against the Indianapolis Colts. He has gained 71 yards after contact as well.
                                      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Gronkowski plays well against everyone. He's nearly impossible to match up with in single coverage, so expect the Colts to put at least two defenders on the talented tight end. Even bracketing him with coverage may not be enough to slow him down...forget about shutting him down.

The former UCLA/Washington WR has been in the league coaching on the offensive side of the ball since 2007. He'll now be in charge of budding star wideout Sammy Watkins.

Indianapolis Colts RB Trent Richardson (personal) did not make the trip to New England for the AFC Championship game.
                                      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Richardson was a healthy scratch last week against the Broncos, and now he'll miss the AFC Championship. Behind Dan Herron and Zurlon Tipton on the depth chart, Richardson's game has fallen off more than ever this year. He's due to make $3.2 million (fully guaranteed), but we still think the Colts will consider releasing him.

Arizona Cardinals impending free-agent CB Antonio Cromartie said he would be open to signing with the New York Jets if he hits the free-agent market this offseason.
                                      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Cromartie could go back to the Jets this offseason. He was a standout player with them from 2010-13. The Jets could certainly use all the help they can get in the secondary.
