Free agent Cuban third baseman Hector Olivera is creating a decent stir and thought to be on the radar of the Dodgers, Braves, Padres, Giants and Marlins, according to people involved in the talks.
Ben Badler of Baseball America named most of these teams as possibilities a few days ago. Badler suggest the Braves are among the favorites while Jon Morosi of FOXSports.com said the Braves are having "ongoing" talks on Olivera, who is seen as a strong and accomplished hitter. The Braves, in a bit of a rebuild, are known to like him very much.
One scout suggested he's better than Chase Headley, who received $52 million over four years from the Yankees, who perhaps wanted to act quickly and were content with Headley's performance in the second half last year.
The one thing that could slightly limit the dollars are rumors suggesting he may have an issue with the UCL on his throwing arm, though that hasn't been confirmed, and one scout who saw him recently said he appears to be throwing fine. Those rumors may emanate from the fact he played some second base and did some DHing in Cuban recently.
The Dodgers have been tied to Olivera for quite awhile, but there's a positional question there, as they have third baseman Juan Uribe and second baseman Howie Kendrick under contract for another year.
The Marlins have revamped their roster considerably this winter but may be hard-pressed to compete financially with the other interested teams.

            Andrews, Phils agree on diagnosis

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Philadelphia Phillies officials said Tuesday that Dr. James Andrews agrees with the team's diagnosis that the MRI of Cliff Lee's torn common flexor tendon shows no apparent change, but general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said the club is "not terribly optimistic" that the left-hander can avoid surgery.

Lee threw lightly Tuesday, for the first time since reporting pain in the flexor tendon last Friday, and has been cleared to begin throwing again. But if he feels discomfort as he begins to throw again, Amaro said, "The next order of progression, I guess, would be to have a surgery."

Lee has tried to rehabilitate the injury twice already without surgery, and both times he has reported feeling discomfort.

So "the probability that it will happen again is probably pretty high," Amaro said.
Lee pitched for the first time this spring last Thursday. The next morning he told trainers that the discomfort near his elbow had returned and felt similar to last season, when the injury first occurred.

If he requires surgery, the normal recovery time is six to eight months, Phillies head athletic trainer Scott Sheridan said Tuesday. That would effectively end the Phillies career of Lee, 36, who is in the final year of a five-year deal.

            =====================

My local paper had him retiring.

Jorge Soler, Javier Baezand Kris Bryant hit consecutive home runs Tuesday afternoon against Cleveland's Trevor Bauer in Cactus League action, sending Cubs fans at Goodyear (Ariz.) Ballpark and on Twitter into a tizzy. The solo blasts came in the top of the fourth inning after the Indians had taken a 4-0 lead.

Cubs have some powerful young hitters.

Back-to-back-to-back is extremely rare, even in Little League! These guys will love the wind blowing out @ Wrigley...

For the first time since September 2013, Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez has hit a home run in an MLB game. Yeah, it was spring training, but he can't control the calender. A-Rod took Red Sox righty Brandon Workman deep to left-center on Wednesday afternoon.
                                To the action footage:

Perfect setup for Alex: 88 mph fastball over the plate on a 3-1 count. Those are the pitches a big-league hitter is supposed to hit out of the park.
A-Rod went deep on Wednesday afternoon. (USATSI)By the way, coming into Wednesday's game, A-Rod was 4 for 9 (.444) with a double this spring.

Bryant just a complete beast today. He is extraordinarily special. He is going to be an OPS machine, early and often. Guaranteed.

Cuban star Hector Olivera is a brilliant hitting talent being hotly pursued by at least five National League teams, but whispers that he may have a UCL issue, and could even need Tommy John surgery, have made this one of the more interesting bidding processes in recent years.
According to sources, the Dodgers have recently requested a second MRI on the elbow of the hard-hitting Olivera – the next great international player ready to sign with the big leagues – and at least initially it is believe Olivera declined to provide that.
It isn't known what the first MRI showed, but it was taken in the Dominican, and may not be seen as reliable as a team's own doctor's work. People close to the third baseman Olivera point out he is throwing now and well, and that he is one of the most examined and worked-out international players ever, no matter how many MRIs he submits to.
In fact, he is said to want to sign soon as he can get into a camp and be ready to play on a big-league team by Opening Day. The medicals are said to have been sent to multiple teams, though not all the interested teams have examined him yet.
“He threw fine when I saw him,” one scout said.
Olivera recently switched agents, and new agent Greg Genske declined comment.
Dodgers GM Farhan Zaidi didn't return a text on the matter.
The righty-swinging Olivera, who is being sought by several teams, mostly in the National League, is seen as a stellar hitter who could impact a team immediately – if ready to go. Some big-league execs say he is the second most accomplished Cuban hitter to come over, after Jose Abreu, who looks like a major bargain at $68 million over six years for the White Sox.
There has been some mystery for some time about whether Olivera, 29, may need Tommy John surgery, and while that wouldn't be positive, it's is less serious for a position player than pitcher and requires shorter rehab time – maybe eight months or so. Olivera has logged a fair amount of time as a DH and second baseman in recent years, and some speculate whether it's because there's an arm question.
In any case, the Dodgers, along with the Padres and Braves, are seen as three of the main contenders. The Marlins, first reported by CBSSports.com, and Giants are among other teams interested. The A's also have been reported to have shown interest, though it isn't known how involved they are. Some teams have inquired about a corner outfield spot as well as second baseman and of course third base.
Olivera was said at one time to be seeking about $70 million, and one GM said that wouldn't be completely crazy, adding the caveat … “if he's healthy.”
Most others are speculating that he could receive in the neighborhood of Chase Headley's $52-million Yankees deal, or perhaps a bit more if he's lucky. The Dodgers and Giants are among baseball's bigger spenders, and the Padres have become very aggressive – though San Diego would shock folks if they continued this spending spree.
New Padres GM A.J. Preller plus top exec Logan White, active international scouts, have for years effectively mined the Latin American market. But San Diego, not long ago 30th in big-league payroll, isn't exactly cash rich. Olivera could fit the Padres positionally, but they are already very righty heavy.
The Dodgers have Juan Uribe and Howie Kendrick to play third and second, and they like both those players as candidates to re-sign, but Olivera may work for them even if he's a year away, The Giants need offense, and while they signed Casey McGehee to play third this year, they don't have anyone on a long-term deal at third, either.
The improving Marlins are looking for offensive help, while the rebuilding Braves, who may be reluctant to give out very big deals after a couple recent misses from the previous regi,e (Melvin Upton Jr., Dan Uggla) aren't seen as likely to go past $50 million.

                                                        Some great replies here!

I was going to ask if anyone else caught any "Will Ferrell Day" yesterday.

He played in 5 different games for 10 different teams and played every position for at least a 1/3 of an inning.

He went 0-2 at the plate with two K's but did make contact.

He pitched a 1/3 of an inning, a bunt that he fielded cleanly and threw to first for the out.

I was lucky to see him pitch for the Dodgers and play right field for the Padres.

If you all get a chance, check out the highlights. Great stuff!

Best part is he raised over $1 million for Stand Up To Cancer.

Awesome gesture by one of my favorite actor/comedians!

                                                        Cheers to Will Ferrell!

(12:00 am ET) Yankees pitcher Adam Warren was considered an emergency starter for the team heading into spring training. Now, with Chris Capuano on the shelf until after opening day, Warren is likely to fill into the No. 5 role in the rotation, reports MLB.com. "At this point, I'm not really thinking about it," the right-hander said. "I'm trying to get myself ready for the season. I'm still trying to get myself back in the swing of starting a little bit. But at the same time, it does put a little more meaning to it. You want to go out there and impress, but at the same time, I want to go out there and work on some things and get ready for the season as well, so it's kind of a mixture."

The Japanese right-hander waited for two more reports anyway before the announcement that Dr. James Andrews will perform elbow ligament replacement surgery Tuesday in Gulf Breeze, Florida.

Assuming he pitched the way he did the last few years another top 4 CY finish would make him a FA after the 2016 season, He would be in the same situation Max scherzer was and would most likley get 200 million plus. now He'ss be in Texas though 2017 before becoming a FA.

The closest comp of a dominate pitcher need TJ surgery then coming back was Adam Wainwright, who has his surgery in 2011, missing his age 28 season, on year older that Darvish. Wainwright came back pitcher 3 great seasons as got a 5/97.5 deal, Darvish would be slated to get his deal 2 years younger than Wainwight did, but will also have half the track record of proven recovery. So he could get a deal very similar, and that of course, is if everything goes the absolute best
