#37The plot thickens!
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports coach Ron Rivera is considering holding Cam Newton (ribs) out of Sunday's Week 1 tilt with the Bucs.
Per Rapoport, Newton and his teammates are "optimistic" the quarterback will be able to play. But Rivera is concerned and may end up holding Cam out in an effort to have him healthy for the remainder of the season. The latter makes the most sense. Putting Newton out there against a physical Bucs defense and exposing him to big hits wouldn't be smart. Signs continue to point to Derek Anderson getting the nod under center come 4:25 PM ET.Comment -

#41He is not playing,....as of now.
Panthers' "plan right now" is to hold out Cam Newton (ribs) for Sunday's game against the Bucs.
This "plan" has also been reported by NFL Network, ESPN and other outlets. Carolina fears that if Cam takes a shot to the ribs, it will result in another 3-4 weeks on the sideline. By starting Derek Anderson at 4pm ET today, Cam will have a very good chance to suit up for Week 2. Glazer says Newton will have a chance to convince the coaches he can protect himself by showing well in warmups, but we wouldn't count on it.Comment -

#57He looked ok but having watched him get extended playing time in Clev and AZ it is safe to say he has no business being a starting qb in the NFL unless you are tanking for #1 pick.Comment -

#61Does Carolina stay with Anderson week 2?
hey we have all seen how erratic black QB's can be. Anderson doesnt make costly mistakes.
Maybe the Panthers should let those ribs heal a little longer.Comment -

#68I think Cam sits 1 more week or even 2. I thought cracked ribs can take several weeks to heal. Derek Anderson is more than capable of filling in for a few weeks.Comment -
