Vikings Not Ready To Name Starting QB after Preseason Week 3

This seems like a significant development because it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Cassel would begin the season as the starter, but Bridgewater may be forcing Vikes' hands with his play the last two weeks. Cassel is probably still the favorite to start in Week 1, but it may no longer be a slam dunk.


The Minnesota Vikings are not ready to name QB Matt Cassel as their starting quarterback at this point, according to head coach Mike Zimmer.

We could see Cassel begin the season as the starter, but expect rookie Teddy Bridgewater to take over at some point this year. In a Norv Turner offense, Bridgewater will have plenty of weapons around him to be a successful starter.

Have to start Cassel. If you start Bridgewater and things don't go as planned (and when don't they?) you're jeopardizing the development of a talented QB.

Look at Blaine Gabbert. People are surprised he looks better than Kaepernick this preseason.

But how surprised should they be? Gabbert was picked 10th overall and because of injuries he had to start as a rookie on the worst team in the NFL. No QB would have done a thing there.

So his reputation basically became interchangeable with the Jags - but block for Gabbert and give him some TE/WR/RB and he looks like more of a player than CK, who just looks like a playa.

Minnesota isn't making a deep playoff run this year. They should let Teddy ride the pines all season, 3rd string him - he'll progress more that way.

Yep, that is what Jay Glazer just reported and he is usually spot on. I am just surprised Zimmer did not come right out and say it publicly instead of waffling.
