Cards needed something with 2 starters currently on DL. They have a decent history of getting pitchers off the scrap heap who do well for the Redbirds.

Masty just didnt have it this year... had some nagging injuries... I think he will be better for Cards bc he doesnt have to be the man, not sure he will ever be an all star again

Cardinals still in the mix for Lester after all.

The Cardinals and Pirates are the two teams "pushing hardest" for Jon Lester, sources tell FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal and Jon Morosi.

Rosenthal notes that the Dodgers remain involved as well. The Cardinals made a move for a starter on Wednesday, acquiring Justin Masterson from the Indians, but they remain interested in Lester as more impactful starter to pair with Adam Wainwright. Lester would immediately become the Pirates' ace down the stretch. Lester is a free agent after the season.

Lackey probably will refuse to honor his contract next year. Guy didn't say anything when he was the worst pitcher in MLB in 2011 and didn't play in 2012 and made over 31 million for those 2 years.

Now he doesn't want to play for the 500,000 he agreed to for next season.

I wouldn't want Lackey unless he would play next year like he agreed to, and I definitely wouldn't want Masterson. Cards love trading for mediocre pitchers. Jake Westbrook, Edwin Jackson...
