Ohio State President Gee just gave Smith the kiss of death. If he says that Smith's job is safe, Smith will be gone before the seasons opens. Ohio State may get hit with the double whammy. Pryor will not play another game for them because he is subject to more investigations than an Islamic terrorist is. We do not know how many, if any Ohio State players will jump to the NFL in the supplemental draft. With Tressel gone and all of this happening, Ohio State's chances to win the Big 10 are very slim. The NCAA can wait until after the regular season is over, but before the Bowl Season begins, to throw the book at Ohio State. They can start a ban on bowl games this season, and start all of the other sanctions on the team next season, making life more miserable for Buckeye fans than it is already going to be this season. I guess Herbie knew what he was talking about. How stupid does this make Ohio State fans look now?

#599Some takes on non-BCS teams:
Boise State: This team is loaded. They have an All-American caliber QB in Moore, a very solid offensive line, and a defensive line ranked #1 in the nation by Athlon, and 1-3 by just about everyone else. If there is any weakness at all in this team, it could well be in the kicking game. It is hard finding a game that this team will lose. They should be favored in every game, with the possibility of the game against Georgia, which will be a 3 point or less line either way. With the BCS to decide if the MWC becomes an AQ conference next season (for two seasons), the pressure will be on Boise State to run the table.
TCU: The Frogs will have to rebuild their entire offense, and most of their defense. They also must travel to Baylor, Air Force, San Diego State, and Boise State, and play BYU in Jerry World. With a schedule like that, and a huge lack of experience, it is hard to imaging TCU escaping this season with less than two losses.
BYU: BYU goes independent this season, a move which I personally think is a huge mistake. They return 9 starters on offense, but only 5 on defense. With games at Mississippi and Texas to start the season, and Utah and TCU, the Coug's have a decent shot at a 9 win season, but not much more.
Notre Dame: Brian Kelly's first year for the Irish was very successful. The Irish return 8 starters on both sides of the ball. Their schedule is very doable, with games at Michigan and Stanford being the only major road blocks on the road. They get Michigan State, Air force, and USC at home. If the Irish can get their QB situation straightened out, there is no reason why 10 wins and a trip to a BCS Bowl should not be in their future for this season.
SMU: June Jones has brought this team back to life. With 10 starters returning on offense and 8 on defense, the returning talent is there. The schedule is tough, with away games at Texas A&M, TCU, Southern Miss, Tulsa, and Houston. If SMU can get improvment from the defense, and cut down on the turnovers, they can suprise some people. 10 wins is certainly not out of the question.Comment -

#603AUBURN
The Tigers first three football games will begin early. The Utah State game on September 3 will begin at 11 a.m. on ESPN, the Mississippi State game a week later will begin at 11:20 a.m. on the SEC Network. Auburn's game at Clemson on September 17 will be televised by ABC beginning at 11 a.m.
While he is losing more than 20 players from last year's national championship team, including some key players, Auburn head coach Gene Chizik has been able to keep his staff intact once again. Some of his assistants had offers from other schools, including head coaching offers, but they chose to remain at Auburn. "The value of having our staff back is huge," Chizik said. "There are things that I talk about with our football team. But to me, you start with the continuity of our coaching staff. To me, that's one of the keys." I agree.
GEORGIA
The Dawgs will open the upcoming season against Boise State in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Some reporters questioned why Georgia would schedule such a tough season opening opponent. Head coach Mark Richt said his team needed the challenge. "I think we had lost some of the respect around the league and around the country we had worked so hard to gain. The only way you can gain respect back is to play a team like Boise State and beat them, put yourself in a position where the college football world knows who you are again."
FLORIDA
While oversigning may be a huge topic at the SEC spring meetings, which conclude this afternoon, it's a non-issue at Florida. For one, University President Bernie Machen called the practice "morally reprehensible," but there's also one other reason: school policy dictates there will be no oversigning by Florida coaches.
ARKANSAS
Razorback coach Bobby Petrino is conflicted about what happened at the Sugar Bowl earlier this year. His team lost to an Ohio State team that featured several players who had been given delayed suspensions. Quarterback Terrelle Pryor was allowed to play and earned most valuable player honors despite drawing a five-game suspension for receiving impermissible benefits. "We wanted to play the best players," Petrino said. "There's no question that I don't understand how they were eligible to play in that game. They changed the rules a little bit for that bowl game." I tend to agree with the coach.
Petrino said he wasn't surprised by Jim Tressel's resignation, but he still felt for the former Ohio State coach. Petrino, speaking at the SEC's annual meeting says he knew the former Buckeyes' coach's job security was in jeopardy once it became clear that Tressel was dishonest with the NCAA during an investigation at the school. Petrino says he feels pressure to win, but he knows that when he becomes aware of an NCAA rules violation he must report it immediately.
JACKSONVILLE STATE (AL)
Head football coach Jack Crowe announced yesterday that running back Washaun Ealey and Clarence Jackson have both enrolled in classes at Jacksonville State. Ealey led Georgia in rushing the past two seasons, while Jackson was a linebacker at Ole Miss. Ealey, a junior, played in 21 games for Georgia with nine starts during his two seasons with the Bulldogs. He rushed for 1,528 yards and 14 touchdowns. Jackson was listed as the No.16 athlete in the country by ESPN coming out of high school. He played in four games as a sophomore last season at Ole Miss.
NORTH ALABAMA
Former Florida cornerback Janoris Jenkins has pleaded no contest to a marijuana possession charge. Jenkins, who was kicked off the team following his third arrest in 23 months, was ordered to pay court costs and fines totaling $421 Tuesday. But he was not placed on probation or ordered to perform community service. Jenkins was considered one of the best cornerbacks in the SEC. But his off-the-field issues cost him his final season with the Gators. He will play for Division II North Alabama this season.Comment -

#605BCS Boss Bill Hancock has agreed to meet with the Feds to discuss various issues surrounding the BCS. Definition: Fi Boise State, or any other Mountain West Conference team has a one loss or less season, look for the BCS to elivate the MWC to "AQ" status in 2012. This "promotion" if you will, is only good for two years. By doing this, the BCS gets the Feds off of their backs. Since this is only for two years, the BCS can move the MWC out of the AQ status in 2014 if the Conference does not produce. The BCS could also add the Cotton Bowl as a BCS game, and have the Big 12-2 tie in to that game, and the MWC tie-in to the Fiesta Bowl.
Meanwhile, NCAA resident Mark Emmert says that the NCAA is going to have to "instill fear" in sanctions. This cannot be good for Ohio State. Inferring that the sanctions handed down recently to Alabama and USC did not go far enough is the very last thing that Ohio State wanted to hear. Rumor control has it that Ohio State could receive the same sanctions as USC received, the same sanctions plus a regular season T.V. ban, or the same sanctions for a longer period of time.Comment -

#607SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE
As the SEC coaches left the conference meetings....most were not happy campers. Matter of fact, most are just down right livid. They lost on almost every front this week. Medical exemptions, grad student transfers, a 25-man cap on signees. Whatever the coaches recommended, the university presidents voted down. Here's a recap of the meetings.
*Commissioner Mike Slive announced that the SEC has divided up $220 milion this year with each school grabbing $18.3 million. That's a record total.
*Slive says the SEC will take five proposals for roster management to the NCAA.
*The SEC will have "oversight" on medical exemptions.
*The SEC did pass a 25-man cap on signing classes. Summer school enrollees will count immediately toward the fall's scholarship numbers. The SEC will ask the NCAA to follow the lead.
*The SEC has also nuked the exception allowing grad students to transfer into the league with less than two years of eligibility. Russell Wilson (NC ST QB) will be headed to another conference unless he is grandfathered in under the old rule. The new rule takes effect October 1. (Update: Wilson or anyone else this summer would be allowed to transfer into the league.)
*All twelve presidents voted to approve the 25-man limit.
*The Mississippi State cowbells will get another year. (Some, especially LSU wanted them banned.)
*The presidents voted 12-0 to ban 7-on-7 camps on SEC campuses and SEC coaches can no longer attend them.
The least popular coach at the meeting was Ole Miss' Houston Nutt. It was his 37-man signing class two years ago that first drew national attention to the SEC's oversigning ways. In many ways, the presidents voting can be viewed as a rebuke of Nutt and his methods of roster building.
Seems the university presidents wanted to send a message to their coaches that they run the SEC. And they did.Comment -

#608Houston Nutt is nothing more than an abject failure. If there is a SEC Coach who can screw something up and cost the rest of the Conference, Nutt is that coach is a major underachiever. Why Ole Miss keeps him is beyond me. Where did all those signees get him. A trip to the cellar of the SEC West.
The reality of the issue is that the Presidents made the correct decision. This just forces the scouts and coaches to make sure that the kid they are scouting can read, and has not spent half of his adolescent life behind bars. I welcome this move.Comment -

#609Oversigning is unethical. I walked on and earned a scholarship by busting my ass. For a school to yank that away from me would be just wrong and infuriating. Some of these kids can't afford to pay tuition, so if the scholarship is taken away they don't have anywhere to go. I don't think all the coaches against the cap. Florida, Georgia, and Vanderbilt were opponents of oversigning.
I don't get the banning of the 7 on 7 camps.Comment -

#610Daneblazer, I was fortunate enough to get a free ride in football but always respected and appreciated teammates who were playing on partial scholarships or with no financial help at all. Hell, they worked just as hard as the scholarship players.
The 25-signee limit means SEC coaches just saw their margin for error shrink. They won't be as willing to chance scholarships on iffy academic qualifiers. While signees' scholarships and roster spots might be more protected, they have to get there first.
The 7-on-7 football tournaments are big with high schools here in Alabama. Saban was mad as hell that Bryant-Denny Stadium won't be allowed to host them.Comment -

#617just checking in and WOW..... the SEC presidents REALLY shafted the league on several rules. Georgia and Florida have to be LOVING the new 25 player rule.... they are the hands down winner of the conference on that one. huge in-state talent pools for each so that will make it less of a problem than for other schools. the fact that pres. from schools in Mississippi and Arkansas approved this shows they fail to openly admit that a successful football program reaps benefits throughout the university system - especially in the south. Tennessee is especially puzzling as they rely heavily on out of state recruiting. I think you will still see the "big 6" in conference be successful, but C-USA schools and those around that level have to LOVE that ruling.
as for the medical hardships.... laughable and a token gesture at best.
on the scholarships being removed.... i played a non-revenue sport @ AU. I had a partial scholarship. After 3 years when I still wasn't getting it done that money went to different recruits or walk-on's who WERE getting the job done. No hard feelings from me... they earned it, they should get it. Same with any sport or any aspect of life.

#620HIRED GUNS
The NCAA in 2006 began allowing players with a degree in hand to transfer to other schools and earn immediate eligibility. It was a novel way to reward players who took their academic responsibilities seriously. The move was praised universally at the time. Beginning in October, though, the SEC will ban graduates from transferring into the league unless they have at least two years of eligibility remaining. The adoration has died. So the presidents don't like one year hired guns. Fair enough.
NEBRASKA
According to his growing legend, high school star Bubba Starling hits 500 foot home runs and throws a football 60 yards from his knees. Baseball America says the multisport star from Kansas City is the best high school athlete in next week's baseball draft. He has committed to play football at Nebraska. He's no secret to the Kansas City Royals. They've been courting the 6-foot-5, 200 pound outfielder since he was 14, bringing him to games and letting him hit in the indoor facility. But there's a catch. He was also a great high school quarterback who rushed for 2,471 yards and 31 touchdowns and Nebraska will do everything in its power to have him play football.
BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP
The first-ever Big Ten Championship game will be held at Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium. According to WISH-TV in Indy. Indianapolis' has been awarded the rights to host the Big-10 title game through the 2015 season. Indianapolis and Chicago's Soldier Field were the only two sites invited to make a formal presentation to the conference last month. Soldier Field in December??
NORTH CAROLINA
The UNC football program has been the subject of an NCAA investigation into both multiple players receiving impermissible benefits as well as academic misconduct. A total of 14 players missed games in 2010 as a result of the scandal, with a handful of players, including starters on both sides of the ball missing the entire season. Apparently, there's a report making the rounds that NC will receive its notice allegations from the NCAA on or around June 10. It's hotter than hell here in Alabama but I would bet its a little hotter around the Butch Davis camp.
TENNESSEE
According to the Chattanooga Times, starting linebacker Herman Lathers suffered a fractured ankle during seven-on-seven session this past Wednesday. Its unclear how long Lathers will be sidelined, although head coach Derek Dooley said he won't be ready for the beginning of the season. Lathers started all 12 games in 2010.
SOUTHERN CAL
The Los Angeles Times is reporting that senior running back Marc Tyler appeared at a hearing before USC's Office of Student Judicial Affairs recently and is awaiting possible disciplinary action for his role in two off the field incidents. It's unclear what type of punishment Tyler could be facing from both student affairs or the football program. Last season, Tyler led the Trojans with 913 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns.

The situation in West Virginia is a mess. if you remember how bad the situation was at Florida State during Bowden's las year, multiply that by 10 and you have how bad things really are at West Virginia. Bill Stewart is OUT after this season, but no one knows who is IN. Holgorsen's problems have been many, not few. The Second reason why we play a lot more earlier games is because the later you get into the season, the more conference games you get, and conference games create more upsets and covers for the dogs than the earlier non-conference games do.
Finally, there is a lot bigger chance of injuries hurting teams in later games than in earlier games. Thus, it is a bigger risk to play future games late in the season.
Guys, remember that one of the biggest reasons to play these "future" games is to set up potential "middles". To do this successfully, I, and my merry band of college gambling fanatics, will have to determine what we think the probable odds should be in EVERY COLLEGE GAME for this season, and have that done BEFORE FRIDAY. Fun time. Normally we break it down by conference, with each one of us getting two conferences. That way, we have two opinions on each game. This year I drew the Pac 12 and Big 12-2. Unfortunately for me, there are a rather large number of week night games involving Pac 10 teams, so I will have to give those games an extra hard look. I will be busy for the next couple of days.Comment
