Let the free fall continue. For those who give a shit, and like to follow programs outside of the large ones, here was the situation this past week as far as who was in the mix:
Jeff Tedford -- Bad idea. I was calling for this guy's firing years before it ever happened, and it was because I'm a NCAAF bettor who always got crushed when betting Cal games, and was able to see what was really happening. A good QB coach with a creative offense, but year in and year out has the most inconsistent team that would often end up laying down when they were behind (But had players like Rodgers/Best/Lynch/Vereen/Djax/Forsett on offense that they'd still cover every once in awhile). Tedford needs to go to a shitty program, reinvigorate it with good recruits and a possible bowl game, then bounce to a bigger school so he can disappoint there instead for a bigger paycheck.
Dirk Koetter - Easily the best fit of the three. Who initially made BSU from a joke into a 10 win team, does anyone remember? Peterson? Nope. Dan Hawkins? Nope, even before him. Yes, Dirk Koetter. Say what you want about his career at ASU, he had some very good seasons there. Word is his interview didn't go great, but you really had a chance at bringing this guy back who you knew for sure had a great handle on how to win in the middle of nowhere.
....but instead you went with.....
Bryan Harsin - Only HC experience was one year at Arkansas State, where he went 7-5 with a team full of of Hugh Freeze and Gus Malzahn's recruits. "But he was a QB for Boise, he knows the area." So what? Do you think any of those kids care about that? BSU had some talent from Idaho, but just some. Most of your skill positions that made that program so successful were coming out of California and Washington. If you lose a few kids from Idaho here and there, it won't sink your program. He's a good offensive mind, and put it to good use at Boise in the past, but it's going to take a lot more than that to fulfill the expectations of that fan base that have gotten pretty high over the past decade.
Yet to be seen I guess, but I'm expecting the worst here. Coming off of a down year, you really need somebody who can com in and keep whatever momentum and excitement you have left in that program going, and this IMO is too much of a rebuild, and just a sketchy choice overall. They should have powdered Dirk Koetter's ass and given him whatever he wanted.
I hope I'm wrong, just for the sake of the Mountain West it would be good to see them back to being relevant, but I just don't think if you're Boise State you can afford to take even a small step backwards, and they did here.
