#38Discovery channel cancels Dana White's 'The Fighters' boxing reality show after just one episode
By Jesse Holland @Jesse_Holland on Feb 6 2014, 10:30a +
Michael Cohen
I dunno ... makin' a statement I guess. Townie crews ain't what they used to be.
Boston massacre.
That's pretty much the only way to describe what happened to "The Fighters" in the ratings when it debuted on Discovery Channel last month, in an attempt to bring the local boxing scene back into the limelight by way of combat sports reality show.
See a clip of the pugilistic series here.
UFC President Dana White -- along with boxing buddy Peter Welch -- were trying to "build the grassroots" and show a "different side of boxing" to get the younger generation interested, much like White did with his industry-changing "Ultimate Fighter" franchise back in 2005.
No such luck.
"385,000 people watched the show, which is penetrating horrendous. especially for Discovery," White revealed at a recent media luncheon. "They didn't promote it at all. I promoted the shit out of it, but it didn't do well, which sucks because it's a great series. I wish people would watch it."
And it looks like "The Fighters" had only one chance to make a first impression.
Welch confirmed on Wednesday that the series was canceled after just one episode, but that he and producer Craig Piligian were looking to move it to an "audience appropriate network," perhaps suggesting that Discovery channel was a poor conduit for sports fans.
Not that boxing has done it any favors.
Outside of a few marquee names, like Floyd Mayweather Jr., the "sweet science" has failed to capture the masses like it once did, as today's combat sports fan -- who wasn't around to see champions like Sugar Ray Leonard, Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini or even Mike Tyson, remains indifferent toward the next generation of pugilists.
Based on the ratings for "The Fighters," it looks like it's going to stay that way.

BREAKING: UFC fighter Thiago Silva arrested after armed standoff with police in Miami suburb
By Cory Braiterman @KrmtDfrog on Feb 7 2014, 12:14a 194
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight Thiago Silva is currently in police custody after sparking a dramatic scene in Fort Lauderdale this evening.
Thiago Silva has had an insane night.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight veteran reportedly stormed into the Brazilian jiu-jitsu school of Pablo Popovitch on Oakland Park Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., "armed" with a weapon and shouting threats.
The good news is that no one was injured and he left the building; however, the drama continued when Silva returned to his home.
This report has the early, and alarming, details:A suspect who had barricaded himself in his Oakland Park home was taken into custody late Thursday night, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.Aye Carumba.
Authorities had set up a perimeter around the home at 2041 Coral Heights Blvd. after the suspect threatened people inside a Jiu Jitsu school earlier, the BSO said.
The armed suspect went to the school at 777 E. Oakland Park Blvd. and threatened the people there, but no one was injured, said the BSO, which was called about the situation at about 7:45 p.m.
He then went to his home and locked himself inside it, according to the BSO.
The SWAT team responded to the scene, and authorities were trying to establish contact with the suspect, the BSO said.
The agency confirmed at about 11:15 p.m. that the suspect had been taken into custody.
Speculation has already begun to swirl that he found out about an affair his wife was having with someone at that school. However, there is nothing concrete to corroborate that assumption at this time.
Silva is fresh off a decision victory over Matt Hamill at UFC Fight Night 29 in Oct. 2013. The win improved his record in the promotion to 7-3 (with two no contests). However, the Brazilian -- who has had issues with weight and banned substances throughout his tenure -- was unable to silence critics, coming into the match overweight and gassed prior to defeating Hamill, who was out on his feet in the third.
Dana White was less than impressed with the performance. And it's safe to assume he'll be even less impressed with this latest domestic incident if it holds true.

UFC's Thiago Silva jailed in Florida on four charges, including attempted murder

Thiago Silva remains jailed in South Florida following a Thursday night altercation at a jiu-jitsu school and subsequent standoff with police at his home.
The UFC light heavyweight is being held at the Broward Sheriff’s Office in Broward County, Fla., and faces multiple charges – including a pair of counts of felony attempted murder. According to the BSO website, he is being held without bond on those charges.
Silva also faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and non-violent resisting of an officer/obstructing justice.
No court date has been set for the 31-year-old native of Brazil.
But Friday morning, UFC President Dana White told TMZ Sports that Silva “will never fight in the UFC again.”
According to a live report from South Florida’s NBC-6 TV late Thursday, Silva was taken into custody following an armed standoff with police.
The station reported that a man, now known to be Silva, was taken into custody following a four-hour standoff at a home in Oakland Park, Fla. The standoff occurred, the report said, following an incident at Pablo Popovitch Mixed Martial Arts Academy in Oakland Park, where Silva allegedly threatened people inside before fleeing to his home.
After barricading himself inside his home, NBC-6 reported, Silva was arrested in a non-violent ending.
Public records indicate that the home he fled to at 2041 Coral Heights Blvd. in Oakland Park is the home, as well as business location, of Silva and his wife, Thaysa, who trains at Popovitch’s MMA school.
TMZ Sports reported that the police report from Thursday’s incident states Silva pulled a gun on his wife at the MMA school, accusing her of having an affair with Popovitch, and told her, “You have 10 seconds to bring Pablo outside and if he does not come out, I will go in the gym and start shooting everyone.” After that, the report obtained by TMZ states Popovitch emerged from the building, and Silva then threatened both of them before fleeing to his home when Popovitch went inside to call police.
On Friday morning, a report from NBC-6 showed Silva after being detained after the standoff. From the back of a police car, he told a cameraman he didn’t pull a gun on his wife. “She wanted my house and she wanted my money. Just don’t report. Can you do that for me?”
UFC officials released a statement to MMAjunkie late Thursday, then later made that statement public. “This evening, we were made aware of a situation involving Thiago Silva,” the statement read. “We are in the process of gathering the facts and have no further comment at this time.”
The charges filed against Silva were not yet made public at the time of the UFC’s initial statement.
Silva (16-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) has had an up-and-down run with the UFC. The Brazilian started his pro MMA career 13-0, including 4-0 in the UFC. But after a win at UFC 125 against Brandon Vera, he falsified a urine sample and had his win overturned to a no-contest and was suspended for a year.
He returned in April 2012 and lost a decision to Alexander Gustafsson. But in his next fight in November 2012, he won “Submission of the Night” against Stanislav Nedkov – only to have it taken away and handed another no-contest when he tested positive for marijuana. He was suspended six months by the UFC.
In 2013, things started looking back up for Silva. He knocked out Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante this past June and won “Fight of the Night” and “Knockout of the Night” honors. And in October, despite missing weight, he beat Matt Hamill in Brazil.
Silva trains with the Blackzilians team in South Florida alongside the likes of Rashad Evans, Vitor Belfort and Anthony Johnson. His next scheduled bout is set for March 15 at UFC 171 in Dallas against Ovince St. Preux.

#59u1.5 again, I reckon.
Also, how did everyone notice Yoel Romero shitting himself, but nobody noticed Felipe Arantes doing the same when he fought Souza? Romero was subtle, Arantes' ass was in the camera for a couple of minutes and the wet patch was huge.Comment -

#64Yeah its hard to ignore but at the same time I wouldn't take it at face value... Obviously its pretty hopeless thing to put out there. I'm Australian and that sort racisim is common in younger people from certain area's/demographics. The ironic thing is, with a last name like Manawaroa, he's likely to have some relation to the Australian Aboriginals... Can't be certain though.Comment -
