I watched my first Bellator last week and was very impressed...the ongoing tournament format to constantly churn the cream rising to the top of the contender pool seems better than the shamefully-arbitrary pandering to the idiot-casual-fan's palate. Case in point, Chael Sonnen leap-frogging all legitimate LHW contenders to a title shot...without being even ranked currently as either a MW or a HW...cuz WWE-style trash-talking resonates nicely in the "market" and the "demographic" they are "cultivating.

The other page they shamefully steal from the WWE-playbook is having the announcers fully in their pocket...the unbelievably-trite canned superlatives that Rogan and Goldberg had to keep spewing about how great Rousey stacks up in the MMA pantheon, and how important women's MMA was to females around the world (now that hey had decided to mass-market it)...blablabla...if it's a real sports league, let 'em put on the events...and let real journalists cover (not just "spin") it.

UFC seems MUCH more interested in the SHOW-business side of things than the GO-business side of things...
meaning the "marketability" of a fighter is MUCH more important to Dana than his "ability"...Fitch is just an obvious case of this...

the common-denominator of those recently -chopped is that their MQ (marketability quotient) is waning...how else can you rationalize Fitch leaving, while Rich Franklin (who is further below the top of his division and much further past his "use by date" as Fitchy) was not...it's obvious it's the MQ (and not the QQ--quality quotient) that drives everything in Zuffa's sports-entertainment-marketing business.

From my first exposure, it seems that Bellator, with its tournament format may place more systematic emphasis on the "steak"...and less on the "sizzle" (that Zuffa seems fixated on).

My problem with Pride was the fact that not only were enhancement drugs allowed, but they were encouraged. Most fighters that migrated from Pride to the UFC struggled when they made their initial transition. Of course Anderson Silva was one of the rare exceptions. But then again, he had already had a few fights in a cage before he fought Leben.

Pride's corruption and links to organized crime were what led to it's downfall.

Half the UFC roster looks like they're ready to lactate, yes they're that much on steroids. It's basically WWE with the exception people actually try to beat the shit out of each other.
