#745bigtymer, interesting. I listened to half of Andreas.
Big takeaway is that the BtC price may well have dipped 10% on total air. Almost like the 10% re-appeared today.Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?Comment -

#752Originally posted by shadymcgradyLet's say you don't report btc holdings on your tax returns this year with intentions to cash out years down the road. What would be the harm in reporting your hold later? They are after all looking for real criminals, not a civilian looking to cash out and stiff uncle sam.
Would the IRS really dig into the blockchain to find out how long you've actually held the coins? The question they pose this yr is like bookmark for anyone who answers yes so that they have you in their records. Would they really dig into it for tax purposes? Let's say you own more than the average person, enough to get flagged.Comment -

The best method I believe (and I'm a holder not a trader) is to just wait for someone like Saylor to buy in, don't try to hit the low ... just see it bounce back and be happy that you are in way lower, and with the added confidence that it's going back up. For example, when it went back to 32 from 29 absolute low, I knew it was going to climb again. And it will.
But if I'm wrong, who cares, I'm holding 5-10 years. I won't be wrong though.Comment -

#756Originally posted by StackinGreenI have seen many accountants on the internet, and personally asked a fairly conservative accountant that I know, about reporting holdings that never were not involved, in any way, in a sale or resulted in capital gains. Both of these said no reporting. I presume that means if there is a question on the form, and you are taking this advice, you just leave it blank. Correct?
At any time in 2020, did you receive, sell, send, exchange, or otherwise acquire any financial interest in any virtual currency?

someone has a farm/home/land that they bought a long time ago for $50k, now it's worth $500k (but they owe $400,000 on it) so you tax them $100,000 that they don't have... only way of paying is getting rid of the home and now they are left penniless with no propertyComment -

I know that is a possible for proposal for estates to cancel out the stepped-up basis that otherwise wipes out gains at death, but I haven't heard of that proposed otherwise.Comment -

Plus, in the scenario you mentioned - How da Fook would someone owe 100k in taxes on something they "bought" a long time ago for 50k that is now "worth" 500k, YET they owe 400k on it?Comment -

That's not how property taxes nor capital gains taxes work.

The point of the analogy was to show how bad that proposal is when applied to any other asset..Comment -

#767Another analogy:
You buy a piece of art for $1,000. Ten years later the art is worth $50,000. Can you imagine having to pay taxes on your $49,000 gain?
I bought 3.5 bitcoins at a little under $2,000. I don't want to pay taxes on that until I cash out. I'm sure none of us do.Comment -
