why do books offer dime lines for bases?
Just curious as to why MOST decent books offer dime lines or even lower when it comes to baseball. Perhaps it is to encourage action? or perhaps it is due to the heavy quantity of games throughout the year lowering their overall risk and exposure to small swings and variance with the bettors.

any opinions or theories about this?

    thanks.

Just my opinion but I believe books offer dime lines on baseball (and not football and basketball) because they have to so they can generate interest. For instance if all the books started offering 30 cent lines on the NFL people would still bet especially the square tourists coming to Las Vegas. Frankly, I am a little surprised that the books have not tried to increase their take on NFL games already. Of the major sports, baseball ranks behind the NFL, college football, NBA, and college basketball. Those 4 sports all have 20 cent lines currently. If the economy remains bad for a much longer period of time you may see some places opt to push the boundaries of what is currently the accepted vig. Historically this has happened before. For instance in baseball it was the generally accepted rule of thumb to have nickle lines.
