MLB Betting: Yankees Visit Texas Rangers
MLB Betting: Yankees Visit Texas Rangers

Alex Rodriguez and the New York Yankees head to the Lone Star State for a weekend series with the Texas Rangers. Texas is favored on the money line in Game 1 behind left-hander CJ Wilson.

By most advanced metrics (and by some basic ones, like the standings), the New York Yankees are the best team in baseball. World Series is in the bag, right?

Ask any Yankees backer, though, and they’ll tell you New York has some holes to fill in its starting rotation with the club headed to Arlington for a three-game series with the Texas Rangers beginning on Friday night.

CC Sabathia has held up his end of the bargain as the ace of the staff, but after that, the Yanks are hurting.

A.J. Burnett has been brutal for most of the season without former personal catcher Jose Molina around to babysit him through every start.

Andy Pettitte was enjoying one of the best seasons of his career before going down with a left groin strain, and is on the 15-day disabled list. He needs to get back in form before the playoffs begin.

Phil Hughes pitched well enough to make the American League All-Star team, but his second half numbers are poor. The young righthander won’t make his scheduled start this weekend as Joe Girardi looks to limit his innings.

Javier Vazquez has been a bust much like he was back in 2005 for New York, and Dustin Moseley is a stopgap measure at best.

This is all true, but optimists look at the Yankees’ 87-53 SU record that has them up +3.55 units on the MLB betting odds moneylist and see no reason that they’re really in trouble.

Look, New York might win it all anyway, but don’t forget about the stroke of luck that positioned them to cash the World Series last season. Because of favorable scheduling and Sabathia’s ability to throw on three days rest, the Yankees used only three starters in the 2009 postseason (Sabathia, Burnett, and Pettitte). Keep in mind that was with a healthy Pettitte and a Burnett that was on top of his game.

Sabathia won’t go this weekend for New York, which sends Vazquez (10-9, 5.01 ERA) to the bump in Friday night’s series opener (8:05 p.m. ET). Vazquez has failed to go at least five innings in each of his last four starts, and had a 12.46 ERA in one outing against Texas this season.

Oddsmakers have the Rangers as -145 money line favorites on Friday night, while New York is priced at +125. The total is listed at 9½.

Texas hands the ball to C.J. Wilson (14-6, 3.10 ERA) in the opener. Wilson allowed six runs over 5 1-3 innings to take the loss in the Rangers’ 6-5 defeat at Minnesota on Sunday, but it was the first time Texas fell in one of his outings since July 11. Overall, the Rangers are 21-7 against the money line in Wilson’s 28 starts this season.

Burnett (10-13, 5.15 ERA) toes the rubber on Saturday night (8:05 p.m. ET) for New York, while Texas sends Tommy Hunter (12-3, 3.99 ERA) to the hill.

Hunter has cooled off after a strong start to his major league season following his callup in the spring, but he’s remained a solid wager at home. The Rangers have won eight of Hunter’s nine starts at Rangers Ballpark, during which he’s posted a 3.06 ERA.

Cliff Lee (10-8, 3.37 ERA) is expected to throw in Sunday afternoon’s series finale (3:05 p.m. ET) after missing his start on Tuesday because of a back injury. I’d look to fade Lee and the Rangers with Moseley (4-2, 4.83 ERA) matching up with the lefthander.

Quite simply, Texas has failed to win games when Lee takes the ball. The Rangers are only 3-8 in Lee’s 11 outings since he joined the club from Seattle prior to the All-Star Game.

Josh Hamilton (ribs) is questionable to see action this weekend for Texas. MLB’s leader with a .361 batting average, Hamilton played catch on Wednesday, but is still recovering from a collision with the wall last Saturday.

The Yankees have taken four of five from the Rangers this season. The teams split a two-game set in Arlington last month.
