Carlos Gonzalez and Rockies Battle Reds
Carlos Gonzalez and Rockies Battle Reds

Carlos Gonzalez is a man possessed right now. His bat is a reason the Rockies are small favorites to extend their 5-game win streak at the expense of the Reds today.

Carlos Gonzalez. Get used to hearing that name. Colorado Rockies opponents know it all too well already.

Gonzalez' first inning three-run blast on Tuesday helped the Rockies to a 4-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds in the second game of their series. Colorado went off at minus 130 in winning their fifth consecutive ballgame. The loss dropped Cincinnati to 1-4 on the current road trip.

Baseball oddsmakers hung 120-125 chalk on the Rockies for Wednesday's clash. The early total was 9-9½ runs depending where MLB bettors shopped Wednesday's odds release. BetJamaica and Bookmaker.com were carrying 9½ and charging $1.20 for the 'under' while TheGreek.com was a flat nine and charging $1.20 for the 'over.'

Colorado rallied from a 4-0 hole in the series opener Monday for a 10-5 win. Troy Tulowitzki and Gonzalez did most of the damage at the plate with four extra base hits and five runs driven in between them to bail Ubaldo Jimenez out as a 200 baseball betting favorite.

Game 3's starting pitchers will each be seeing the opposing lineups for a second time after solid outings in their initial assignments, both in Cincinnati just after the All-Star break.

Bronson Arroyo (17-11, 3.84) has been the workhorse of Dusty Baker's staff with 18 quality starts on the season, seven in his last eight trips to the mound. He's also been pitching in some tight games the past six weeks or so with the 'under' 7-0-1 his last eight.

The right-hander was a 125 favorite at home in Cincy to begin the second half of the season, and the Reds cashed with a 3-2 win. Arroyo pitched into the eighth and allowed two runs.

Aaron Cook (10-12, 5.21) worked the finale of that same series and helped the Rockies avoid being swept in a 1-0 victory. Cook tossed the first six scoreless frames; Chris Iannetta's solo shot was the game's only run with Colorado 130 road 'dogs at the betting window.

Cook has been pretty hit-or-miss for a while now, but looked pretty good in his first start back from the DL this past Friday at Coors, a key 4-3 win at San Diego. The Rockies were 130 underdogs with Cook spreading out four hits in 6 1/3 innings to get the win.

Partly cloudy skies and a slight chance of rain are in the forecast for the Denver area on Wednesday. Game time should find the thermometer in the low-to-mid 70s and the skies should clear as the evening progresses. Winds are presently listed to be out of the SW at 5-10 mph (3B dugout to right-center).

Plate duty for the third game of the series should fall to Mike Reilly. The money line is split fairly even between home teams and visitors when Reilly works a game in 2010, with the visitors taking 15 of 29. Reilly does have a strong 18-8-3 lean to the 'over,' 10-4-1 in the 8½-10 run range as this game is.

The four-game set closes Thursday with an afternoon pitching matchup that finds Travis Wood (9-3, 3.19) on the mound for the Reds opposite Jason Hammel (15-10, 4.25) for the Rockies. First pitch is set for 1:10 p.m. Mountain Time.

NOTE: W-L records displayed for starting pitchers are team records in games the pitchers start.
