MLB Odds: LA Dodgers Host Philadelphia Phillies

Manny Ramirez is reportedly headed to the White Sox on Monday, meaning he will not have to face Roy Halladay when the Phillies and Dodgers begin a three-game MLB betting series.

On his way out of town, Manny is still being Manny. Claimed on waivers by the Chicago White Sox on Friday, Manny Ramirez was held out of the Dodgers’ starting lineup once again on Sunday, but he managed to have an impact in Los Angeles’ 10-5 loss to Colorado at Coors Field.

Impact in a negative light, of course. Pinch-hitting in the sixth inning for the Dodgers, Manny was tossed by umpire Gary Cederstrom for arguing balls and strikes after only one pitch.

The White Sox have until Tuesday to work out a deal with the Dodgers for Ramirez, who was expected to be in Joe Torre’s lineup for the opener of L.A.’s three-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies (73-57 SU, -3.71 units) on Monday night at Dodger Stadium.

After Manny’s rapid-fire ejection on Sunday, Torre might have to reconsider if his mercurial leftfielder isn’t on his way to the Windy City on Monday. Ramirez has once again proven to be a distraction even if he’s played in only five games since July 1.

Thing is, the Dodgers desperately need what Manny brings to the table. Ramirez is hitting .313 with a .405 OBP, .915 OPS, and eight home runs in 64 games this season, and remains a dangerous bat in the middle of the order even if he’s in the twilight of his career.

Los Angeles’ offense is powerless – especially against lefthanded pitching – without Manny. The Dodgers rank 25th in dingers (96) this season, and are hitting .239 against southpaws, including .208 in their last 10 ballgames.

L.A. (67-64 SU, -7.30 units) has the benefit of avoiding any lefty starters this week against Philadelphia, but that’s only worth so much with Roy Halladay (16-9, 2.22 ERA) and Roy Oswalt (9-13, 3.12 ERA) taking the ball on Monday night (10:10 p.m. ET) and Wednesday afternoon (3:10 p.m. ET).

Philadelphia, which trails Atlanta by two games for first place in the National League East, is 17-10 against the money line in Halladay’s 27 outings this season, including an 8-2 mark in his last 10 trips to the bump. Halladay loves throwing at night, too: The Cy Young Award candidate has a 1.86 ERA under the lights this season.

Hiroki Kuroda (9-11, 3.56 ERA) takes his turn opposite Halladay for the Dodgers, who opened as +130 underdogs for the opener. The Phils were priced as -150 money line chalk, while the total was on the MLB betting odds board at 6½.

Sandwiched between Halladay and Oswalt in the Philly rotation is Kyle Kendrick (8-7, 4.64 ERA), and he’ll toe the rubber on Tuesday night (10:10 p.m. ET). Kendrick was rocked for six runs – five earned – to take the defeat in the Phillies’ 15-9 loss to the Dodgers on August 10 at Citizens Bank Park.

Kendrick matches up with L.A.’s Carlos Monasterios (3-4, 3.54 ERA) on Tuesday night. Monasterios enjoys the pitcher-friendly confines of Dodger Stadium, where he’s posted a 2.76 ERA this season.

The marquee pitching matchup is in the finale when Oswalt goes against Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw (11-8, 3.01 ERA). Philadelphia is 5-1 against the money line in Oswalt’s six starts since coming over from Houston, including a 2-0 victory on August 11 when the righthander shut out Los Angeles over seven innings of work to get the win.

Expect a low total on Wednesday night with Kershaw and Oswalt taking the mound. In addition to Oswalt’s solid numbers, Kershaw has a 1.80 ERA in his last three starts, and a 2.00 ERA in daytime outings this season.

The Phils lead San Francisco by 1.5 games in the NL Wild Card race after they pulled off a three-game sweep at San Diego over the weekend. The three wins lifted Philly to 25-11 against the money line in its last 36 games as it hunts down Atlanta in the NL East.

The Phillies have been a profitable wager for ‘under’ bettors lately. Philadelphia has cashed the ‘under’ in eight straight games (4-4 SU), and in 13 of its last 16 contests overall (9-7 SU).

Charlie Manuel’s team took two of three from the Dodgers in Philadelphia earlier this month, although Los Angeles outscored the home team 24-21 in the three games.

The Phillies just seem to handle the Dodgers like no other. With Halladay pitching, I have to take the Phils
