Piniella to retire after today's game

Lou Piniella announced he plans to retire today as Cubs manager after this afternoon's game against the Atlanta Braves at Wrigley Field.

He cited family reasons for leaving a team in second-to-last place in the National League Central Division with a record of 51 wins and 73 losses.

"When I previously announced my intentions to retire at the end of the season, a primary reason for my decision was that it would allow me to spend more valuable time with my family," Piniella said in a statement released by the ballclub. "That time has unfortunately gotten here sooner than I could have ever expected.

"As many know, the several weeks since that announcement was made have been very difficult on a family level, requiring two leaves of absence from the club. While I fully intended to manage this club the rest of the season, a family situation at home now requires my full attention."

In a related story, Lou's family said waiting til the end of the season for him to retire would be just fine.

He has had a great career but wasn't getting the job done he should have retired at the All-Star break or sooner to give the team a better chance.

Looking forward to Ryne Sandberg next year. Any other choice would be disappointing.

i can justify that reason for wanting to retire.

Some say he never really started the season.

98 year old mom - Wow. Good for her. Although, I imagine all 98 year olds are day to day.

No, there have been many other who were much worse in that time period.

The curse of the billgoat not only effects the Cubs, but now the manager....there's got to be a priest out there that can exercise the demons of Wrigley

Piniella Decides to Leave Cubs Early to Care for Mother
                                  By NAILA-JEAN MEYERS
                                  Cubs - Bats Blog

Lou Piniella announced last month that he would retire as manager of the Cubs at the end of the season, but he decided Sunday to no longer postpone his departure. Saying he needed to turn his attention to his family, Piniella will leave the Cubs after Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves. He released this statement:

When I previously announced my intentions to retire at the end of the season, a primary reason for my decision was that it would allow me to spend more valuable time with my family. That time has unfortunately gotten here sooner than I could have ever expected. As many know, the several weeks since that announcement was made have been very difficult on a family level, requiring two leaves of absence from the club. While I fully intended to manage this club the rest of the season, a family situation at home now requires my full attention.

Piniella said before the Sunday’s game that his mother was sick. He left the Cubs for four games earlier this month to take care of his mother in Florida.

“My mom needs me home,” Piniella, 66, told reporters in Chicago. “She hasn’t gotten any better since I’ve been here. She’s had a couple other complications, and rather than continue to go home, come back, it’s not fair to the team, it’s not fair to the players. So the best thing is just to step down and go home and take care of my mother.”

I watched part of this game. They were their typically awful selves. Soriano even booted a ball out in LF that would have ended the inning. Instead they proceeded to give up 4 runs. He's seen that numerous times this season. Hell, we all have.
