Washington Nationals +315 (Marquis) @ Philadelphia Phillies -375 (Halladay); ou8 PHI-1.5 -170
With some of the heaviest juice on any favorite seen on any game in quite some time, the Philadelphia Phillies will look to Roy Halladay to get game one of a new series against the division cellar dweller, Washington Nats. The Phils are coming off of a loss in yet another Cole Hamels start on Thursday night, and will do everything in their power to get this series at home off on the right foot.
There are several reasons why the Phils would get this kind of chalk from the oddsmakers in this series opener, but most notably, they are nearly 20 games over .500 at home on the season, are in the midst of a 20-6 run which has led them to the Wild Card lead, Roy Halladay (who is in serious contention for yet another Cy Young award) takes the hill for the Phils, and the Nationals look to Jason Marquis who has only five starts on the season and has yet to make beyond 4.1 IP, allowing 6-6-7-2-5 earned, respectively.
As we have seen a thousand times before, a dog can certainly win in baseball. But, for some reason, the bookie is making this line over and above. Even with the RunLine at -170, seems to be too much juice to play. I do, however, love to get a little risky on days on which Aces go. My advice for this ridiculous line is this: Expect the Phillies to win, and probably win big. With that being said, put a very small play on the Washington Nationals at +315 and add the Phils in some exotics. I point to Lester and Gallardo as additional pieces. Anyway, with that being said, we will break down the pitching matchup in South Philly this evening.
Roy Halladay (16-9, 2.24. 175:22) is the ace of the two time defending NL Champion Philadelphia Phillies, who have once again found that offensive swagger, winning 20 of their last 26 games.

Halladay is in the midst of some impressive streak with his Phils, winning 5 straight games and getting the decision in each, and the Phils getting the victory in 8 of his last 10. The Doc did allow 5 earned in two different starts in that time, once @ Wrigley on Sunday Night Baseball, and the other was @ Citi Field in a game the Phightins banged out a 6-5 win. However, in the starts surrounding those minor blips on an otherwise very impressive last two months, Halladay allowed a combined 7 earned runs in the other 8 games dating back to the 25th of June. Halladay leads the National League in strikeouts and is in the top three in ERA, Wins, and WHIP.
Jason Marquis (0-5, 14.33) is up against the wall today. He will absolutely need some help from his offense, which in all honestly, is more than capable. The Nats got some rest yesterday for Adam Dunn who has been mired in a bit of a slump of late. Maybe the break will relax him a touch, and the challenge of facing the cream of the NL crop will push him over the edge. That’s a great big maybe. But it could still happen. The Phils ALWAYS struggle against the Nationals. I don’t know why, I don’t what it is, but they always have their hands full. With Zimmerman and Dunn and the base path bother in Harris, Morgan and Bernadina, the Nats may very well score some much needed runs for Marquis, if he can get deeper than the beginning of the 5th.
Look, I’m not here trying to get you to think that Nationals are going to win this game tonight. I don’t think that they can do it. I think that the Phils are too hot, too at home, too coming off a loss, too hungry, too Halladay. But, there are several reasons/trends that could lead to a really nice +315 payout. Here’s what you should do: Put the bet minimum on the Nats, and add the Phils RL to some parlay you really like. Manipulate the system, fellas.
NL EAST WATCH.
ATL -143 (Jurrjens) @ CUB +123 (Dempster): No cupcake here for the Bravos after coming off a loss on Thursday. The Phils did fail to gain a game yesterday, but could very well have another opportunity. No visiting team likes playing at Wrigley and today they get the best the Cubs have to offer. Jurrjens should pitch well, he usually does, but will it be enough to get the Braves back on the winning side of things. Dempster has won three straight and allowed only 3 earned in 19.1 IP.
The Phillies would LOVE for the Cubs to return the favor after getting pummeled in Wrigley themselves about a month ago. I like the Cubs in the only day game on the slate.
