Was watching the herd on ESPN this morning and dude has a very good point about the reds. He basically said the reds suck and i would agree with him. The reds have a losing record against the cardinals, giants, padres, and braves. The only reason the reds have a winning record and are at the top of the division is because they've beaten up on garbage teams and they had a soft interleague schedule. Look it up for yourself. The reds will fold near the end and if they do make the playoffs via division or wildcard it will be a quick exit.

#6I gave up trying to figure out Arroyo and will be laying off tonight. I do agree that the Reds are not as good as their record and will be a strong fade in September as Leake's arm starts to show the innings and Dusty rolls out those crazy lineups.Comment -

#7The good teams beat the shitty ones...isn't that what makes them good. The cardinals have a losing record against the Astros. Does that make them a bad team? The reds lost 2 extra inning games and gave up 7 runs in the 9th against Atlanta, or they would have a winning record against them. They were beating the Cardinals for the season before this past series. Didn't realize great pitching + strong hitting = "not really that good"Comment -

#8In conclusion, I don't think they're the best team in baseball by any means, but they're top 5 in the National league IMO.Comment -

#10uh...ya... the central in total is a crap division. The last place team in the East would be battling for third in the Central and find themselves just a few back of the Brewers. When you get 16 apiece against the weakest division in baseball, you are going to appear better.Comment -

#11The way they are made, they can beat anyone in a 7 game series. They have enough starting pitching that they can hang around. but they also have starters that could get lite up. they can't/won't late through multiple series thoughComment -

#13Cowherd loves to stir the pot and knows that Ohio listeners are very passionate about its sports teams. He does it with the Buckeyes also. I love his show, but he readily admits controversy for him drives his ratings.
So glad to hear him say this. Keep the public betting against the Reds and the lines down so I can keep making money off them. They are not a flashy team with big name starters, but they have enough depth in the starting rotation to win series after series.
Tonight's line movement has me laying off a side with Hudson throwing so well of late. Took the under 5 1st five tonight.Comment -

#15No team that is in or near first place with about 45 games to go sucks...
Now, are they the 27 Yankees? No, but if you think the Cards are a good team, you cant think the Reds suck. The two teams have basically the same record.
I do agree that winning the horrid NL Central is akin to being a one-eyed man in the land of the blind...

#16The Reds are better than most people think IMO. They have good balanced hitting, nice starting pitching depth and a decent pen. They also play really good defense. However, I personally think they are better built for the regular season than they are the playoffs. They don't have that top of the rotation guy that it is going to shut the other team down in the playoffs and they are a relatively young team overall. If they make the playoffs, I'll predict a first round exit, but anything can happen in baseball (especially in a 5-game series).Comment -

#20Cowherd is a f'ing tool. The Cards may wind up winning the division this year but that does not make the Reds a fraud. Look at what they are doing and how they have done it and you can see that they finally understand the challenges faced by a small market club. Walt Jocketty has done it before as the GM in a small market (St. Louis). They finally understand that you can never ever ever have enough starting pitching. He has put together a nice young nucleus of young players and some solid veterans to lead the team in times of potential crisis (guys like Rolen and O Cab and now Jim Edmonds). These are guys that don't even have to contribute every day just to lead the ship through rough waters.
But the whole key to this team now and going forward is their young starting pitching. Let's look at these guys individually:
Johnny Cueto is 24 years old. He is 11-3 with a 1.26 WHIP and a 3.38 ERA in 2010
Mike Leake is 22 years old. He is 8-4 with a 1.43 WHIP and a 3.78 ERA in 2010
Travis Wood is 23 years old. He is 3-1 with a 0.88 WHIP and a 2.65 ERA in 2010
Homer Bailey is 24 years old. He is 2-2 with a 1.38 WHIP and a 4.92 ERA in 2010
Edinson Volquez is 27 years old. He is now 24-9 in his Reds career. His WHIP in this time is 1.37 and the ERA in that time is 3.53.
(Add in the always solid Bronson Arroyo who in most any rotation is a solid #4 or #5 type guy who you can figure will go about 15-10 with a 4 to 4.50 ERA and give you 200+ innings and you have the makings of an outstanding rotation for 2010 that should get better as they gain more experience)
*** not Chapman was not even included on this list. While he won't contribute as a starter this year watch out in 2012 and beyond with this young stud.
Joey Votto is a legit MVP candidate. He will only be 27 this year. There is no reason not to think they guy is anything but a 30 HR 100 RBI .300 AVG .900 OPS guy every year. Brandon Phillips is only 29 and one of the 4 or 5 best second basemen in all baseball. Then add in young players like Jay Bruce age 23, Drew Stubbs age 25, and other young players in the minor league pipeline and you can see a team that should compete each and every year for the NL Central division title for the next 5 years.Comment -
