Major League Baseball enjoys successful All-Star Game in Anaheim
Major League Baseball completed a successful MLB All-Star Game in Anaheim with the continuation of its "Going Beyond" efforts at the 81st All-Star Game raising approximately $5 million for national and local charities.
The All-Star Game Charity 5K & Fun Run presented by Sports Authority and Nike set records for total attendance with 9,209 participants and money raised with more than $200,000 in proceeds. That amount is more than double the inaugural total raised in St. Louis last year thanks to increased sponsor support of the event. Since 1997, more than $40 million has been donated to non-profit organizations from All-Star Workout Day proceeds.
Major League Baseball All-Star FanFest drew its fourth highest crowd in its 20-year history with an attendance of 118,429. The event featured appearances by Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig, All-Stars Torii Hunter, Joe Mauer, Evan Longoria and Heath Bell, and more than a dozen Hall of Famers including Rod Carew, Bob Feller, Tony Gwynn, and Rickey Henderson.
The fans that attended FanFest snapped up All-Star merchandise at a rapid pace. The per caps (the total amount of money spent per person who attended) for The Sports Authority All-Star Store at FanFest was 24.7% higher than last year.
The All-Star Game on FOX again drew a large audience with nearly 30 million people tuning in to watch. A total audience of 29.5 million viewers watched all or part of the broadcast according to Nielsen. The All-Star Game led FOX to an easy primetime ratings victory marking the Network's best primetime since the American Idol finale on May 26 and the highest-rated primetime program since Game 7 of the NBA Finals on ABC on June 17.
MLB Network expanded its coverage of the 2010 All-Star Game to include 11 live hours across MLB Tonight All-Star Edition, MLB Tonight All-Star Batting Practice and the All-Star Red Carpet Show presented by Chevrolet. MLB Network's 13 on-air talent in Anaheim conducted over 115 interviews, featuring 57 of 82 All-Stars, two Hall of Famers, All-Star managers and coaches and actor/comedian Will Ferrell. Fans got in on the action as well as nearly 3,000 FanFest attendees recorded virtual interviews with MLB Network talent Harold Reynolds and Hazel Mae at the MLB Network booth.
In an interview that aired on Wednesday, July 14, MLB Network's Bob Costas spoke to Major League Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig about the passing of New York Yankees' principal owner George Steinbrenner, the emergence of Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg and on-field matters including instant replay, pace of games and the possibility of daytime World Series games.
