The root cause of all this is the media. The media is what's getting you all worked up here. The more and more they start only taking one side and ignoring the other, people are finally going to start treating it like the sideshow act it is.

Could the girl have been lying? Not a chance!! What about criminals putting cops lives in danger by resisting? Nah, that's totally okay to do, we're ignoring that.
