are there any jobs that require a basic college degree?

Hey fellas I need some job advice. I have a bachelors degree in liberal arts but I didn't specialize in anything. I don't really have any special knowledge or skills.

I dont want to feel like I wasted my time going to college so are there any jobs that just require you to have a college degree but they don't care what your major is?

if so what are they ? I don't really care what i do but I want to make a decent salary

Sadly, I see myself being in the same situation when I graduate in a few months. Majoring in History and feel there won't be many opportunities out there in my field, so I'll be just looking for a place that wants you to have any degree. My only hope is that the majority of History students are female and want to become teachers afterwards, so that leaves me in a minority category as a male with a History degree who does not want to teach.

It sucks to hear, but most college degrees are pretty much useless unless you get lucky. Some Joe who took an IT course for a year will probably have more job security and make more money than we will.

Not being an assshole or anything, but if you want a certain salary then you should have spent the last 2 years of your undergrad in a specific field....otherwise instead of being 1 of 10 applying for a specialized field job you're stuck being 1 of 1,000 applying for general category.

Try being a restaurant manager or Home Depot department manager.....least you'll get benefits.

Have you considered teaching in Asia? The money isn't too bad for entry-level; I earned about $30 per hour teaching SATs in South Korea. The tax was low too; at least 26 of those 30 dollars were take-home pay. Also, housing and flight costs are usually included.

For Masu485: what would be an example of a non-teaching history-related position? I really can only think of an academic-type position at a museum, and possibly a dream-job-type position at auction houses like Sotheby's/Christie's, in which case you'd need an Ivy-level degree.

Well that's the problem, I can't think of any besides in a museum. I admit, I would enjoy that, but I would liked to have gone more the business/computer route. You need at least a Masters to have a decent job at a museum. But, like the example you gave, I feel I'd be part of a 1 in 10 as opposed to a 1 in 1 000 because most people in my field are women who just want to teach afterwards. I am hoping that would give me an advantage.

I may just end up taking a year long IT course. I know at least 7 or 8 people from my gym who have done this and now have contracts working for $75/hr and up for major banks.

Well you should still take your shot at a museum-type job (and try looking into auction houses); I'm sure it's +EV (not talking strictly money for the EV part).

From (bad) experience, most IT positions at major banks are not great in terms of career prospects or security, but the money and work/life balance isn't bad.

Yeah, I agree with you for the IT positions. As it's contractual, chances are after a year you will be looking for another job. The money is ridiculously high though.

I will look into auction houses, thanks. I'd love to work for one of the major museums in the city as well.

Have you considered an MBA? You can get these without a business undergrad, it just takes longer. If you got an MBA in Finance or Accounting specifically, you would have a lot more opportunities.

the position we just hiring for, Help Desk / PC Support, says 2 year degree or 4 years experience. does not say what kind of degree. and actually, i'd prefer the 4 years experience. we just hired a guy and i can't even remember if he has a degree, i just remember he has 10 years experience. we are paying him exactly what he was making at his previous job (got laid off) and it is a real good salary, which is good for me because i'm getting a nice bump just so i make a good amount more that he does because i'm his supervisor and i know what he is making.

Maybe a career/interest test would be good at this time. Well worth a try if you don't want to be sorry when you're stuck in a job you don't want in the first place.

What type of activity do you enjoy doing best?

Almost 3 years later and you're still trying to find a gig (now with $125 to put towards it).

Just an idea, but maybe spend 1/5 of that nest egg at lynda.com and at least learn something new over the next 30 days. You won't get a job right away from it, but you'll at least work your brain a bit.

everyone has a MBA nowadays, not necessary IMO.

Look into some type of sales gig. As long as you are somewhat personable, want to make $$$, and can BS your way through some cold calls and actual sales calls you can make a good living. Med sales is dying/dead, but there are tons of other options. I've heard of a few guys making a killing selling industrial flooring or something along those lines.

    Also, GO WILD

    Not exactly.

For a lot of opportunities an MBA will matter very much where you get that degree. A prestigious degree can be a big-time networking opportunity.

Sure, a MBA from a top 10 school (UVA, Dartmouth, Stanford, etc). However, shelling out 100k+ to get a degree from mankato St is not worth it

damn i looked up the pre-requisites required before applying to pharmacy school and basically i would starting college all over again. They got mad requirements 2 years of calculus organic chemistry , biolology basically all the hard college courses.

Ive never taken an accounting class but the MBA in accounting might be the better route.

btw u see all these online mba degree advertisements, say u get your MBA online ... will your employer know you got your degree online?

3 years from now you'll be working the same "dead-in" job (your words) because you spend way too much time on forums. Anyone posting 25-30 times a day while working is robbing his place of employment. You also spend hours capping games to put together 5-10 dollar parlays when you should be working harder and concentrating on doing a better job to earn higher commissions.

    Lazy motherfuker.
