No the Jets sideline screwed up there. The ref cannot reasonably be expected to hear someone call for a timeout behind him and take his focus off the game to verify it is the coach calling the timeout - and then if it isn't the head coach, just turn around and focus right back on the game.

The most hilarious part is that Rex Ryan, as a member of the Ravens coaching staff, made the exact same mistake 7 years ago in a MNF game against the Patriots and it cost them the game.
