As the New York Rangers head to Detroit to take on the Red Wings, both teams will be looking to bounce back after losses in their most recent games. Here are our NHL picks for Thursday night’s game between the Rangers and Red Wings.

A 3-2 overtime loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday dropped the Red Wings to 7-3-3 for the season, though that's still an impressive start given where they were a year ago. Meanwhile, a 4-3 loss to the rival New York Islanders dropped the Rangers to a disappointing 6-5-3 record.

Here are my NHL picks and predictions for Thursday's game between the Rangers and Red Wings (odds via FanDuel SportsbookBetMGM, and DraftKings Sportsbook; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5 scale).

Rangers vs. Red Wings Odds

Rangers vs. Red Wings Odds Analysis

The Rangers are the moneyline favorites ranging from -155 to -160. Both cash and tickets have come in favor of the Rangers, with 85% of the cash and 69% of the tickets.

Rangers vs. Red Wings Picks

  • Moneyline: Rangers (-155 via BetMGM) ★★★
  • Over/Under: Under 6 (-120 via DraftKings) ★★★
  • Prop: Artemi Panarin anytime goal (+205 via FanDuel) ★★

Rangers vs. Red Wings ML Pick

Rangers (-155) ★★★

The Rangers are 6-5-3 and currently riding one of the lowest of lows for a team projected to be one of the top Stanley Cup contenders. Sitting on a three-game losing skid, including a loss to the Red Wings on Sunday, Rangers left-winger Artemi Panarin and center Mika Zibanejad have carried this offense. We know New York's offensive potential as a whole and, barring injury, one could imagine it’s only a matter of time before the Rangers progress to their top potential.

For the Red Wings, it's the opposite. Detroit’s gotten off to a great start at 7-3-3. Thanks to the offseason addition of Ville Husso, Detroit’s boasted some of the best goaltending in the league, along with a solid blue line to protect him. The Red Wings currently have the ninth-best penalty kill in the league. However, their offense is rather middle-of-the-pack.

We’re seeing production from the Red Wings' top guys, Dylan Larkin and Moritz Seider, but their offense doesn’t have the same depth as New York’s. Regression is inevitable with this group.

That said, if regression is inevitable with Detroit, so is a progression with New York. I’m taking the Rangers on the moneyline as I anticipate the losing skid ends Thursday.

Rangers vs. Red Wings O/U Pick

Under 6 (-120) ★★★

I already mentioned how excellent Husso’s been for Detroit, but his numbers are even more impressive. In eight games played, Husso’s 5-1 with a 1.86 GAA and .941 SV%. He possesses the ability to steal wins for his team, especially against lackluster offenses.

It’s hard to compete with a .941% save percentage unless of course, you’re Vezina Trophy winner Igor Shesterkin. Shesterkin’s numbers might not look as pretty with a .910 SV% and 2.58 GAA, but he’s still Shesterkin. More so the defense in front of him needs to step up, and the offense needs to wake up because Shesterkin also can win games on goaltending alone.

Rangers vs. Red Wings Prop Pick

Panarin anytime goal (+205) ★★

Panarin’s been the firestarter of this Rangers team so far this year. He leads the team in points with 19, including five goals.

Though he’s more of a playmaker, this is a must-win game for the struggling Rangers to end a three-game losing skid and get New York some much-needed momentum. Panarin’s come up big already when his team needed him to this season, and I can see it happening again Thursday with a timely goal or two.
