While not quite at their best, the Capitals played much better against the Blackhawks on Friday than they have in about two weeks. Considering their AHL-like opponents, that won't be something they boast about.

That performance, however, won't matter to the collective after securing the win and seeing their captain tie Gretzky's all-time goal record in one fewer game.

Everyone, including the Great 8, should be much more relaxed heading into today's game against an Islanders team with one victory from their previous seven games.

The Islanders' solitary win in that stretch came on Friday against a Minnesota Wild team that also has one win in the last seven. The Islanders' sour patch has all but taken them out of playoff contention.

Compare that sullen feeling to what's going on in the Caps' camp, who must feel lighter than a feather knowing they have all but locked up the Central Division and will witness their captain make history before the playoffs commence.

Excluding the 3-1 victory over the Wild, who have one of the worst offenses over the last two months, the Islanders allowed at least four goals in six straight games. Horvat hasn't done nearly enough to help his team make the playoffs, with just two assists in the last five games. I'm backing him as a situational play, expecting that same uptick against a team he shows his best stuff.
