Another year, another new name for the franchise — and another new starting quarterback for the Washington Commanders.

The addition of Ryan Fitzpatrick as the rising tide meant to lift all boats within the Washington offense last season fizzled instantly with Fitzmagic enduring a season-ending hip injury in Week 1. Not keen on another year of Taylor Heinicke and the Colts desperate to offload their own ill-fated quarterback experiment, the Commanders ended up with Carson Wentz for a collection of draft picks.

After failing to lead Indianapolis to the playoffs last season, Wentz said he’s happy to be “wanted” by Washington. But can he find success in D.C.?

Below, we preview the 2022 NFL season for the Commanders with a look at their futures odds and make our top picks (odds via DraftKings Sportsbook and FanDuel Sportsbook).

To win NFC East (+500)

Games against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears, Houston Texans, Atlanta Falcons, and two games against the New York Giants could put Washington at a decent floor this season.

If you believe the Commanders can best the Cowboys and Eagles in head-to-head match-ups this season and improvement from Wentz, their path to the NFC East title gets clearer and this becomes a great value play.

Under 8.5 wins (-170)

Eight wins feels about spot on for this Washington team in 2022. Despite a relative cupcake schedule, I don’t see a winning season for this group. I expect Washington to struggle against divisions foes Dallas and Philadelphia. They track as being the type of team that won’t get embarrassed by superior opponents but will rarely upset anybody.

I’m avoiding this wager at DraftKings where the win total is set at 8. At FanDuel, it’s 8.5 with hefty juice if you want to play the Under.

To miss the playoffs (-185)

If I squint enough, I could see the Commanders at +150 to make the playoffs as a value in an ever-expanding NFL playoff format. Through clear vision, though, I can’t justify the pick even at the juicy odds.

Though I do consider Wentz an upgrade at quarterback, I don’t know that the 25th-ranked scoring defense from a year ago can improve enough to vault the Commanders above .500. Even among the lower tier of NFC teams, I view the Lions and Bears as better long-shot wild card options.

Wentz Over 23.5 passing touchdowns (-110)

With Wentz last season, the Colts had the league’s fifth-lowest pass rate at 52.6%. Though Washington wasn’t much higher on that list at 25, they also had Heinicke as their quarterback — how much passing would you really want to do in that scenario?

The Colts’ offense ran through running back Jonathan Taylor, but Wentz genuinely didn’t play badly in 2021, throwing 27 touchdowns to just seven interceptions. There’s no obvious workhorse rusher in Washington, so Wentz should get a chance to air things out a bit. It’s hard to imagine Wentz whiffing on this line if he plays a full season.
